  1. Unless he pulls a Steve Lyons, we shouldn't...
  2. Yes, but they were good enough to have a good chance at someone else's 25 man roster. They wouldn't have been taken otherwise. I know the theory is not always easy to make reality, but maybe Cashman could have traded some young players on the 40 man roster or prospects needing rule 5 protection for players not needing protection or 3 for 1 type deals.
  3. Tell him he will get less than 100 PAs next season, and he will beg to be traded. Pay almost all his contract and many teams would take him.
  4. How about "BOSTON" tatoo'd on his ass?
  5. Well, to me, Ellsbury is a complete waste of a roster spot, so there's one more prospect you could have kept. He'll probably be traded with cash anyways: why not do it before rule 5?
  6. He's extremely inconsistent from year-to-year. WAR -1.7 2012 +3.2 2013 0.0 2014 +3.5 2015 -0.1 2016 +4.1 2017 His defense was over-rated from day one and has gotten worse. -18 DRS from 2016-2017 with a minus UZR/150 both years. (Granted, he's good at digging out bad throws- see Devers) We need more power. He does not have more power than Moreland. Career IDO .155 Hosmer (.179 in 2017) .187 Moreland (.189 in 2017) He is said to be getting 5-6 years, which is sick. He is said to be getting $20M+, which is sicker. (MLBTR projects $22M x 6) Combined and we have a vomitorium on our hands.
  7. No. I do NOT want Hosmer. His money and years will kill us. I'd love to have JD. I'd prefer Moose over Hosmer, but it's more about thinking Hosmer is the worst FA on the board (per dollar and years).
  8. I'd rather have neither than both.
  9. Yes, he did a lot to save roster space for several of his better prospects, and maybe the ones he lost today were not good enough to warrant other moves.
  10. But, we have Lin, Holt, Quiroz and then Hernandez once Pedey returns for the utility IF role. We do not have great depth at the catching position. Swihart's abilty to catch and play LF and perhaps 1B or 3B gives him the edge over Marrero, in my opinion. This assumes he looks good in ST'ing.
  11. Something like 495 PAs and passes a physical. He just barely got over 500 PAs this year.
  12. While Cashman has done a superb job rebuilding the Yanks into a top contender while also building up the farm and getting the budget under the luxury tax limit, I feel he has to get a little ding for not being able to convert quantity into higher quality by not losing so many rule 5 prospects. I know it's hard to criticize someone for gathering too much young talent, but he probably should have tried to make more 2 or 3 for 1 deals before the rule 5 list had to be submitted. He could have even traded a pre- rule 5 prospect for a prospect that did not need to be protected, even if that prospect was not as good. Anyelo Gomez to ATL Nestor Cortes to BAL Mike Ford to SEA Jose Mesa to BAL
  13. This is the only way I bat Betts first.... 1) Betts 2) Beni 3) Abreu (3 way trade involving JBJ) 4) JD Martinez 5) Devers 6) HRam 7) Bogey 8) Pedey 9) Vaz If we sign Santana and trade JBJ for a pitcher, I might sub Santana for Abreu in the above line-up, but would prefer Betts 2nd or 3rd... 1) Bogey 2) Beni 3) Betts 4) JD 5) Santana 6) Devers 7) HRam 8) Pedey 9) Vaz
  14. I'm perfectly fine with Leon as our back-up catcher, and I don't see keeping out-of-options marrero on the 25 man roster as reason enough to boot Leon for Swihart (also out of options) to fill his catching slot. Let Swihart and marrero fight it out for a utility role. The loser can go on the phantom DL or be DFA'd. Keeping catcher depth is more important than keeping Marrero. We have Hernandez, Holt, Lin and Quiroz for non 1B infield depth.
  15. Word is HRam will be able to play 1B. If he ends up getting hurt, at least we save the vesting option for 2019. Win-win.
  16. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!....................................................................................Boo!!!
  17. LOL. Signing JD, Santana or Moustakas would be like a trunkload of Tums.
  18. I seriously doubt trading Vaz is being thought of. I think we're keeping Swihart to see if he can win a utility role/3rd catcher slot on the 25 man roster. I'm not sure the Sox brass is ready to hand Swihart the 2nd catcher slot and lose what rapport Leon has built up with Sale & Porcello. I could see us trading or cutting Leon, if Swihart looks good in ST'ing. If that happens, our best case scenario would be for nobody to claim him and he accepts a minor league role with the Sox.
  19. Trade not signing. The Angels agreed to pay his full remaining contract.
  20. LOL! What's next? Diarrhea upon a Hosmer signing?
  21. Now, do that with Ellsbury and just about everything on your roster is rosy. Too bad, you didn't do this before the rule 5 player determinations.
  22. Machado is a better fit for us than Stanton, but I agree, we aren't going to offer him $300M/10 to get him to say okay AND then give the O's the rest of our farm.
  23. Yes, the idea is to package 2-3 shiny players for an extra shiny player- either with more upside or more years of control. One could also try the plan that I'm not sure has ever been done before- give up a shiny young player to entice someone to take Ellsbury with him- thereby creating spending space for several years to come and create one more 40-man roster slot for a shiny player in danger of being lost in next year's rule 5.
  24. Actually, the studies show putting your best up 2nd, if I'm not mistaken. (5th is also high.) I'm with you though, I form my line-up like this: (Guidelines not set in stone- other factors are involved, but these are the major factors.) 1) I start with the 3 slot and put my best combined OBP & SLG guy here. If it's a tie, I go with BA over BBs. 2) I put my best OBP guy up 1st, unless he has power and I lack it with the next 7 guys. 3) I put my next best OBP up 2nd. 4) The best remaining overall hitter goes up 4th with power as a high second priority. 5) The closest guy to the 4 slot criteria goes here. 6-9) Best up higher-worst down lower
  25. Yes, there is security in signing an extension now vs risking a serious 2018 injury or another "off year" like 2017.
