  1. I get it, but I still think if there is anyone who can comeback from this, it's Pedey. I realize he may not. One cannot will himself against nature and win.
  2. Hard to know, but neither is anyone we should count on in an important role. One may end up winning a key role, but they will not be handed one over this winter.
  3. Cleveland might go with EE and/or Chisenhall. My guess is KC gets Morrison or Moreland, and TB gets Duda. The A's will not sign a 1Bman and Seattle has the A's 1Bman for next year. Maybe Reynolds returns to COL. That leaves Hosmer, Santana and Alonso with Texas and the Sox as the biggest bidders out there. Am I missing something? (Someone?)
  4. True, but I'll bet on the chance he returns before expected (mid May).
  5. Signing "second level" free agents like Santana and Cozart might be the best plan, if prices get way out of hand for Stanton & JD Martinez. It's hard to imagine how to give everyone enough ABs by signings a 1Bman and shortstop: 1B: Santana (HRam) 2B: Bogey then Pedey SS: Cozart 3B: Devers then Bogey (when Pedey returns) DH: HRam then Devers (when Pedey returns) I'm not sure jerking Bogey all around is a good idea. I guess we could trade him for a pitcher and then focus on keeping Betts & JBJ with extensions.
  6. ...and, how many teams really need a 1Bman? Since the Sox could sign a 3Bman and move Devers to 1B or DH, we have even more players to choose from. 1Bmen Free Agents Yonder Alonso Lucas Duda Eric Hosmer John Jaso Adam Lind * Mitch Moreland Logan Morrison Mike Napoli Mark Reynolds Carlos Santana
  7. I think pride is an element of it all, too. No GM wants people to think the bought a championship. Certainly, if the Dodgers had won last year, we'd have heard the same argument as we did for years against the Yanks. I do think Henry could easily pay for a $300M budget plus the luxury taxes, but he won't, and he hasn't. I think Henry okays us going over by $39.99M this season, if we have to in order to be highly competitive, but eventually, he will want to reset the tax again. He will not want to be the highest paid team in MLB- maybe for one single year only.
  8. Cool. I played a few games with Orlando Wooldridge, Tracy Jackson and Silk Wilcox while at ND. Played many more with some football players during the off season, including Jerome Heavens, Luther Bradley and Dave Waymer (RIP)- many were all state in basketball but came to ND to play football. I lived in the only dorm that had mostly single rooms, so it was jock city. Joe Montana's room was just a few doors down from my room, but I never saw him in his room. (He lived "secretly" off campus.)
  9. I think players understand how the system works. The big pay days come later in their careers.
  10. With Pedey out, I think Holt sticks on the 25 man roster, at least until we see how Brentz looks and if Marco can handle 2B. Marrero is out of options. I think he goes and Holt stays. Lin begins the year at AAA. Swihart may force his way into the choice for the 25th slot as he is out of options as well. (Phantom DL? Trade someone?)
  11. My look at our current depth chart (ML or near ML ready): C: Vaz - Leon Swihart, Romanski, Procyshen 1B: HRam- Travis (Devers/Holt/Swihart) Chavis, Witte, Ockimey 2B: Pedroia- Hernandez- Holt Lin, Marrero, M Miller 3B: Devers- Hernandez- Holt Lin, Marrero, Chavis, Witte SS: Bogaerts- Hernandez-Lin- Holt Marrero, de la Guerra LF: Benintendi- Holt (Shaw, Chavis, Swihart) Brentz, Mars CF: Bradley (Beni/Betts/Holt) Mars, Castillo RF: Betts - Holt (JBJ/Beni) Brentz. Mars, Castillo SP: Sale, Price, Pomeranz, Porcello, Rodriguez, Wright Velzquez, Johnson, Elias, Haley, Beeks, Lakins RP: Kimbrel, Smith, (Thornburg), Kelly, Barnes, Maddox, Workman, Hembree, Scott Taylot, Jerez, Martin, Shepherd, Buttrey, Coisart
  12. I don't mean to bore anyone with talk of the Bucks, but that Bucks team of the early 70's could have been a dynasty. They drafted Julius Erving in 1972, but he went to the ABA and was later stolen from the Bucks by the Hawks. The Bucks later drafted Alex English in 1976, but they let him slip away, My favorite Buck of all time was Sidney Moncrief with Ricky Pierce not far behind (also Paul Pressey). Another Bucks "what if": not trading Dirk Nowitzski for Tractor Trailor.
  13. I was thinking the same thing a while back. EE looks more and more like "the one that got away" as we see these prices seemingly going up and up.
  14. The Big O was pretty much over-the-hill by the time the Bucks got him, but even then, he was amazing. People remember he averaged a triple double one year, but he also did it for a 3-4 combined year stretch to begin his career. He revolutionized the "big guard" aspect of the game. When Lucious Allen went down, it forced Oscar to be the point guard. The Celtics masterfully instituted a full court press from wire to wire and tired the Big O out. Mickey Davis filled in well, but ti wasn't enough. Allen had averages 18 points (3rd on the team) and 5 assists (2nd) per game in 1974 Other Bucks on that 1974 runner-up team besides Jabbar, Dandridge & Robertson: Jon McGlocklin Curtis Perry Cornell Warner Dick Garrett Terry Driscoll
  15. Look at the overall effect: 3B: Moustakas 1B: HRam (eventually Devers) DH: Devers vs 3B: Devers 1B: Santana DH: HRam If you only look at defense, especially for 2018 only, I'll take the Moose scenario. If you want power first and OBP second, Moose is slightly better than Santana. That being said, I'm moving closer to wanting Santana over Moose, especially if the money is significantly different.
  16. Would you take Santana over Moustakas at the same rate?
  17. I'd rather have HRam too, and so would the CWS. That's one of the pluses they get.
  18. Sorry. I misread your point. My bad.
  19. Yeah, "hate" is a strong word, but as a kid, the frustration morphs into anger and sometimes boils over.
  20. If JD and Stanton become way too expensive, I think I'd be happy with this: Sign: Santana $58M/4 B Shaw $21M/3 L Duda $7M/1 1. Bogey SS 2. Betts RF 3. Beni LF 4. Santana 1B 5. Devers 3B 6. HRam DH/1B or Duda DH/OF/1B 7. Pedroia 2B 8. JBJ CF 9. Vaz C Bench: Leon, Duda, Hernandez or Holt, Swihart/Brentz/Marrero/Lin/Travis SP: Sale, Price, Pom, Porcello, ERod/Wright/Johnson/Beeks/Haley RP: Kimbrel, Shaw, Smith, Kelly, Barnes, Hembree, Scott/Maddox/Workman/Thornburg
  21. ...and you do hear many teams saying they want to reset the luxury tax, like the Sox did this year.
  22. My childhood favorite player was Bobby Dandridge. I remember the Bucks losing to the Semltics in 7 games as Lucious Allen slipped on a warm-up jacket and blew out his knee before the series. I hated the Celtics for years, but now I appreciate what they have done to rebuild. Also, I hated Danny Ainge after his coast-to-coast drive past every Notre Dame player in the 1981 NCAA tournament eliminated my Fighting irish. (I was at ND for that year as well as Joe Montana's 1977 championship season.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWdQ6IClxTc
  23. I don't think restricting a player's salary helps the "overall" salaries go up. If they give less to Bogey, it doesn't mean they will give it to JBJ. The highest salaries are what drives the next highest salaries. The next highest drives the next group just below them. Look at arbitration. It keeps players on their team and severely restricts their salary for several years. They often get "rewarded" after the fact by big FA contracts that look like an overpay, but in many cases they were "underpaid" before free agency. This is entertainment. Look what Oprah makes
  24. I get it, but teams still "look to" improve, even if they might realize they are getting worse. (Maybe they look to not get even more worse.) I do think the Sox are looking to get better- to have a better opening day roster than last year, at least on paper. We could get better by just having Devers, Price, Wright, Smith and others for a full season, but I think we're going to try to upgrade our clean-up slot in the line-up and/or 1B (which might be the same move).
  25. Like I said, I do NOT WANT SHIELDS! I'd take shields only to lessen the prospects needed to go back to the CWS or to force them to take HRam or Castillo as an offset of salary.
