  1. Teams that are out of playoff contention just about give away starters that are at least slightly better than the ones signed to minor league deals in February. We're talking 7th starter type in jan-Feb vs 4-5 starter types in July.
  2. 2017 Team WAR by Position (Note: we had the same guys at 1B, 2B and CF.) 0.9 1B (24th in MLB) 2.0 CF (22nd) 1.7 LF (20th) 2.3 2B (17th) 1.9 C (17th) Why not start bashing Beni? We're a whole 5% into the season and he sucks!
  3. Nunez is good enough on offense to offset his poor 2B defense. He and Pedey are better at 2B than HRam and Moreland are at 1B. JBJ is not a weakness. He's a clear strength that, IMO, every GM would love on their team.
  4. I've never said, if HRam is clearly doing better than Moreland vs RHPs and we need him to make the playoffs, I'd sit him. I'm not for sacrificing this year for next. I just don'tthink the choice will be clear. I think Moreland will do pretty close to the same as HRam vs RHPs this year, and he's a better defender, so eventually a close choice will have to be made.
  5. To keep HRam from vesting. The better question is, "Why is he batting 5th and Devers 8th?" (I'm not bashing Cora- I like the guy.)
  6. It's not easy to get a tiger to change his stripes. ERod has been successful doing what he does. Of course, I'd prefer him to go 7 IP not 5, but I'm not so sure I want him to try changing anything to reach that goal. Be careful what you wish for. I'm cautiously optimistic that his knee issues are behind him. I think that alone could allow ERod to have his best season ever in 2018 and go on to great things, even if it's just for 5-6 IP per start.
  7. Yes, 3 Ks for his first inning back sucks. 4 good innings today is all we need.
  8. How? We have no budget space. We have no top prospects to trade for someone better than Pedey/Nenez at 2B or JBJ/beni in CF. We signed Nunez to cover for Pedey and maybe indirectly JBJ, too, as Nunez can play LF, perhaps better than JMart can. BTW, I still think our weakest position is 1B and not CF or 2B. Our infield defense already increases the challenges our pitching staff faces every game. I'm not sure we want to weaken two OF positions by replacing JBJ.
  9. It doesn't have to be an either or choice. We can win it all with HRam being rested and sharp for the playoffs. It might even increase our odds of winning, if HRam does not vest and is fully rested for October. If HRam seems to be an essential factor in us even making the playoffs (or winning the division), and that has yet to be deterined, then yes, we have to make a serious choice about choosing "sunken cost" for 2019 in order to win it all in 2018. What if HRam gets 650 PAs, we win the division, and then he looks tired or burnt out in September and October? Is that a possibility? Do the odds of him getting injured go up by giving him 600+ PAs vs 495? It's not as simple a choice as maybe some think it is. It's not black and white.
  10. Sabathia and Drury to DL.
  11. Maybe Pom has been "overperforming" his talent level, but without replacing what he has given us in actuality, we will not be as good a team. Can we make up the drop off elsewhere? Sure. I've never said the window closes after this year or even after next year. My point is that we built this team to win in a solid 5 year window (that included 2016 and 2017). If we are planning on losing pom or Kimbrel, so we can keep HRam, then we are saying 2018 is our best chance year (on paper).
  12. He does walk too many batters, but he wasn't our worst last year: BB/9 4.2 Kelly 3.8 Fister 3.6 Pomeranz 3.6 barnes 3.3 ERod 2.9 Price 2.6 Hembree 2.1 Porcello 1.8 Sale 1.8 Kimbrel 2016 5.1 Kimbrel 4.2 Barnes 3.7 Ross 3.6 Buch 3.4 ERod 3.3 Wright 3.1 Pom 3.0 Hembree 2.5 Taz 2.0 Price 1.3 Porcello
  13. Plus, it wasn't like DD wasn't out there looking for veteran depth for the minor leagues. Those guys saw the writing on the wall and went to teaams where they had a better chance at getting a long look. That alone is telling.
  14. Agreed. I never had issues with JF and our pitchers.
  15. That's why I said wait until we see if Pedey is sharp and healthy. Even then, I'll need a serious talking into trading JBJ.
  16. Price is not opting out.
  17. There's likely goint to be a signifcant drop off from Pom to Wright/Johnson. Notice I used the word "likely" in both posts. I'll br thrilled, if Wright or Johnson grow enough, so we don't need to replace Pom. It would probably allow us to keep Kimbrel or replace him in kind. As of now, I think we'll need to go outside the system to replace Kimbrel and Pom or face a significant drop off in production from their roles in 2019.
  18. But, your argument was that we should not wait until summer to get starter depth. By waiting until July 31st, we can obtain a $9M pitcher and only owe $3M.
  19. Even if we don't re-sign Pom, we'll likely need to replace him in kind. Since we don't have the prospects to do that via trade, it will be costly. I do think it's possible Henry will be okay going over the $40M penalty line next year, but then we will be in a major mess going into 2020 with some big stars looking for their major pay day.
  20. All that, and our starters still were burnt out by playoff time. One could argue, he should have been a "robot" at 6 IP or 90 pitches.
  21. Actually, there are ways you can be taught to win some lotteries... https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/02/how-mit-students-gamed-the-lottery/470349/
  22. Exactly, and maybe even 150 PAs isn't enough to make a rash decision. To me, no decision needs to be made until Pedey returns.
  23. If Pedey returns and looks sharp and healthy, we'll need a place for Nunez to play. (Nunez probably plays a better LF than JMart.) If a great need for a SP'er arises by the deadline, I could see DD looking into trading JBJ (plus maybe Wright, Johnson or Velazquez) for a solid SP'er. I hope we keep JBJ, but things can change within a season.
  24. One could argue that Bogey never had much power before the wrist injury, so I'm not so sure you can easily chalk it up to that.
  25. Actually, I think it was pretty well thought that we'd only need Johnson for 1 or two startes and Velazquez for one.
