  1. Is Moreland a significant upgrade over JBJ's bat to warrant the huge drop in defense? Yes, maybe HRam and Moreland "deserve" more PAs but not on this team. I'm still baffled by the Moreland signing. That $13m could have been spent or saved for the summer. We have Swihart and Travis as back-ups to HRam. Duda could have accomplished more for our offense, or Moose could have helped our defense and been a better offensive threat than Moreland.
  2. We also had Marrero at 3B for a big chunk of last year, so 150 games of Devers will see a loss there as well. It looks like HRam will play more 1B than last year- another drop off. The more JMart plays the OF, the more drop off there. I don't think we'll be that close to last year's team, defensively, but I do think we're better than 23rd.
  3. Agreed. I don't mean to come off as authoritarian or as a Mr. Know-it-all, but I guess I do to some. I love a good debate and have been known to get confrontational, when I feel someone has crossed the line of civility and decorum. I really appreciate your posts, cp, despite our many differing points of view. The world would be a dull place, if they all believe exactly the same things.
  4. To me, the choice is simple and clear, at least after "experimenting" over the first 9 games. JMart should DH FT, and he can play OF at NL parks. Try to schedule his days of rest at NL parks to minimize his OF exposure. Beni, JBJ and Betts are our FT OF'ers. Get them rest when they need it and maybe "rest" JBJ more, especially when we put JMart in the OF at NL parks. HRam & Moreland share 1B duties. I'd use Moreland as a late inning defensive replacement as much as needed, and I'd start Moreland vs more RHPs than I think most here would want. When Pedey returns, and we need to find playing time for Nunez, we should know more about JBJ's offensive level. We might adjust OF playing time to allow Nunez to play LF here and there.
  5. I know it's a tiny sample size, but if our first 9 games don't prove that Fldg% is as near as useless as a stat can be, then nothing will convince those who believe it's better than any defensive metric. And, if "it's what I observed is all that matters" argument is pulled out, I will ask, what have you all observed over these 9 games? Great D? Good D? Decent D? Bad D? Horrible D? If anyone chooses one of the first 2, I'm going to suggest an eye exam. If anyone chooses "decent", I'm going to disagree. Can we all agree to just throw fldg% into the trash, once and for all? (I expect it's impossible to get 100% consensus on anything, but WTH!)
  6. Umm, I'd contend those were already well known facts that did not need to be tested or "experimented". (Note: I love Cora and am not bashing him at all.)
  7. I wasn't being sarcastic. I really do not put much emphasis on a cherry-picked 3 season sample size, even though it seemingly supports my position.
  8. A Sox- Yanks Comp Runs scored 55 NYY (4th in MLB) 42 BOS (11th) OPS .747 NYY (10th) .733 BOS (14th) UZR/150 6.0 NYY (6th) 0.8 BOS (17th) DRS 5 NYY (4th) -8 BOS (28th) (I might add, the Sox have yet to commit an "error" this season. The Yanks have 10!) Runs Allowed 26 BOS (4th) 44 NYY (20th) ERA- 65 BOS (2nd) 98 NYY (13th) WHIP 1.13 BOS (5th) 1.20 NYY (10th) SP'er ERA- 41 BOS (1st) 79 NYY (6th) RP'er ERA- 102 BOS (20th) 1.32 WHIP 121 NYY (23rd) 1.20 WHIP
  9. I get it. Three seasons of Sox championships proves nothing. It could just be random (maybe a bad choice of words in light of recent discussions) bad luck. Just win, baby! By 1 or 4 is fine with me.
  10. Of course, there is a minimum offensive level JBJ has to reach to remain a plus. To me, he's probably still a slight plus at around a .525 to .575 OPS. He looks like our best choice now while hitting .399. I see no reason to think JBJ will end the season below .650. To me, he's a significant plus at .650-.700.
  11. If Wright comes back strong, we could have a pen stacked with 2-4 inning pitchers and then Kimbrel, Smith, Kelly and Barnes for the late innings only.
  12. As long as our pen is doing well, I'd limit the pitches for 1/3 to a 1/2 season and then don't overdo it afterwards. With Johnson & Velazquez in the pen, we have the "innings guys" to allow us some leeway in yanking starters very early.
  13. Depends. Some team may be looking to dump a high salary pitcher, and since we'll only owe 1/3 of the salary, we might get one for cheap. If Holt and Swihart do well, maybe they can be throw-ins. We could also trade Johnson and Houck for a better SP'er, but that would not be "major."
  14. There are other players we can choose to let walk away over JBJ, and if JMart is to go on being a FT DH, then we'll need JBJ in our OF. Brannen is somewhat of a long shot and my be 2-3 years away. Castillo would add too much to the budget (maybe more than JBJ's last 2 arbs). We have nobody else to play OF, except non-OF'ers like Nunez, Holt, Swihart and Moreland, and some of them won't be around for JBJ's last arb year anyways.
  15. Ohtani's dazzling game on the mound Sunday capped a jaw-dropping week in which he also homered in three straight games as a hitter. The combination makes him just the third player all-time to homer in three consecutive games as a hitter and have a double-digit strikeout game as a pitcher in the same season. The others: Ken Brett in 1973 and -- who else? -- Babe Ruth in 1916. As a batter, Ohtani currently leads all Major Leaguers who have had at least 10 batted balls this season in hard-hit rate: 71.4 percent of his batted balls (10 of 14) have had an exit velocity of at least 95 mph.
  16. I haven't heard anything "new" on XB. I hope he's okay. This might be some good news: Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is making progress in his recovery from the left knee surgery he underwent in October, manager Alex Cora told Ian Browne of MLB.com and other reporters Sunday. Pedroia is slated to begin running the bases Tuesday, which would be the final hurdle in his recovery, Browne notes. Should that go well, Pedroia would remain on track to return in May. The Red Sox have been well-equipped to go without Pedroia early this year, thanks to the presence of Eduardo Nunez.
  17. There are other great defensive CF'ers in MLB, so I'd have to say, yes, he is replaceable. Certainly, his offense is replaceable. We might have signed Jarrod Dyson to $4M/1 and traded JBJ & Wright for a 3rd starter, but I'm happy with JBJ in CF full time. I get that JMart wants to play the OF, but he's a clown out there. We have to do what's best for the team. If he doesn't get it, just show him the film. If he pouts, it was a bad signing.
  18. And the idea that winning more close games shows the "grit" a team needs to win championships is maybe not true.
  19. Well said, especially the bolded in red parts. It's like our park was built for JBJ and Betts. I also think by the end of the year, JBJ's OPS will be over .725 and probably closer to .750 to .775.
  20. Too bad Marco misses another chance to show us what he's got. If XB goes on the DL, we'll probably call up Lin, but I think Holt will play everyday. I'm not sure Nunez at SS and Holt at 2B is any better, defenively. The worst part is losing XB's hot bat. He's not all that great on defense, anyways. I wouldn't have been happy with Marrero as our FT SS, but he'd have helped. He also hits lefties well. That's why I was for starting Holt in AAA and keeping Marrero around, at least until (and if) Pedey returns.
  21. I actually think JBJ loses some points on metric defense by making plays look effortless and taking direct routes to balls hit away from him. (Yes, I just critized UZR/150- something I use a lot.)
  22. Mata or Houck, maybe.
