I said at the time, and still believe it today, I'll take a Pedro at 50% over any relief pitcher we had ready. It's not like the opponents were lighting Pedro up. Most of the hits were bloopers or seeing eye grounders until the 3 hard hits in a row..

Bogey has certainly "come of age" this year. I'd like to have seen some growth on defense over the years, but his offense is doing the talking right now.

RP'er contracts went way up. Great closers are signed, usually by the team they already are on, unless the team is a cheapy one..

I don't disagree. Mark my words, Kimbrel will get more than $95M/5, even if he is not great in the playoffs this fall.

He's not signing a 3 year deal. This is his big shot at huge money. The closer salary has sky-rocketed. He's going large and long.

I was never a big Nomar fan. All flash and little substance on defense, but boy he could hit before the injury he lied about.

Indirectly, the Dodger dump got us several FAs that led us to a ring, but your point is spot on.

I realize it's easier said than done, but I like this strategy better than using 70% of our budget on 4-6 guys.

Very well said. The hard part is that most RP'ers don't "do it" on a consistent basis. Signing someone who has done well for a year or two barely matters. It takes great scouting and talent evaluation to find the hidden gems. We rarely find them, and when we do, like with Brasier, it is usually just for a short period of time. The Rockies went all out on builing up their pen. They are in first place, but not really due to these guys: 6.27 Brian Shaw 4.55 Wade Davis 6.27 Jake McGee

1. Win this year. 2. Decide who to keep and pay them. (I'd like to keep Betts, Sale and JBJ.) 3. Build the farm- most likely through IFA signings (see #4). 4. Trade some talent for younger players and international bonus money. 5. Sign mid level players to 1-3 year deals for a while.

Can we just spend the money on the Mets people who find all their great SP'ers? That's gotta be cheaper than spending money and talent on signing and trading for them.

True, but with the other $15M, we could get 2-3 very good set-up men, as one example. I didn't say we shouldn't pay Kimbrel, I'm just saying it will be costly. Now, I will say it. I would not pay Kimbrel $100M/5 or more. I don't think I'd even play $80M/5, which he will get.

No, but replacing the $13M Kimbrel with a $20M Kimbrel will be costly.

I don't think Henry wants to be known as the second coming of George Steinbrenner. Yes, he can afford to pay the max tax plus the taxes from other tax levels below the max tax line plus the full salaries of current and past players still on the books. Most owners could, if they wanted. Probably all could afford to spend $300+M. I know the draft penalty is rather minimal, but with a weak farm like ours, one in great need of top talent infusion, any ding hurts.

Going over the max penalty line multiple times would really hurt. I doubt that it in Henry's plans going forward. We are straddling the line right now. We lose HRam's and other players' contracts this winter, but arb raises and filling Kimbrel's shoes will be costly.
