  1. Because it's impossible a team as great as the Sox can lose all 10 or even 7 out of 10. Impossible means impossible. It's a lock made of titanium.
  2. It's weird, but there are actually more Sox players declining from last year: 6 Moreland- just barely JBJ- by a little Vaz Leon Devers Nunez On the rise: 4 Betts Bogey Beni Holt (These are huge increases, though) And, the replacement of HRam & Young with JD has been priceless.
  3. The M's tried to hand the game to the Yanks, but they declined the offer.
  4. He's only 28. His defense should be fine for the length of his next deal. No matter: he ain't coming here.
  5. Not according to Baseball Reference. BR has these average WAR numbers since 2015: 3.5 Bogey (4.1 per 650 PAs) 1.7 Iggy (2.8 per 650 PAs) If you add to the equation not signing Pablo had we kept Iggy, it's no brainer choice.
  6. Johnny Peralta. I believe he got hurt, and then they made the trade.
  7. I'm not trying to claim Iggy's defense even things up with Bogey, but I do think it's closer than many like to admit. I've also always claimed it wasn't an either or choice. We could have kept both by moving Bogey, and we still could for next year, but I admit there is a zero chance it happens.
  8. I know. We've already discussed this. That's why I was wondering why you questioned the statement's direction towards the season or tonight's game.
  9. I said as much way back when.
  10. LOL. The division win not tonight's game win.
  11. He's played almost 16,000 innings at 2B and 220 at 3B over his career. While is likely an upgrade on defense, I'd not sure I'd want him as our starting 3Bman FT. We'd have played him at 3B in AAA, if that was even a consideration.
  12. There is very little we disagree on.
  13. Exactly, although Wright throws faster than that.
  14. Of course, but the Astros declines looks like our declines from 2016 to 2017. Here's our 2017 to 2018 mostly inclines... .803 .776 .746 .769= .767Moreland .750 .726> .705 JBJ .760> .664 Pedey to Nunez/.701 Holt .735> .558 Vaz .644> .549 Leon .819> .712 Devers .892> .664 Nunez .548
  15. I'm hopeful, but it's not like Eovaldi, Wright, Johnson and Velazquez have been pitching well enough to instill much confidence they can improve things. I think one or two will rise to the top and give us what we need. The good thing is, we have so many pitchers to choose from with only 3-4 needed. After Kimbrel, we have... Wright Eovaldi Johnson Velazquez Brasier Barnes Thornburg Workman Kelly Hembree Poyner Scott Cuevas That's 13 pitchers for 3-4 key roles and 2-3 minor ones.
  16. ...or 3 or 4 innings, if needed.
  17. That's been my point all along. Plus, Swihart's numbers with the pen are much better than with the starters.
  18. Agreed.
  19. Here is a position by position look at the top 3 contenders for this year's WS: ERA- Starter 1 (Assuming Bauer is out) BOS 44 Sale CLE 62 Kluber HOU 67 Verlander Starter 2 CLE 70 Clevinger HOU 70 G Cole BOS 80 Price Starter 3 CLE 77 Carrasco HOU 77 Morton BOS 81 ERod Starter 4 HOU 86 Keuchel BOS 94 Porcello (Johnson 91) CLE 104 Bieber Pen WHIP by Team HOU 1.05 (77 xFIP-) BOS 1.21 (92) CLE 1.33 (96) Offense by team OPS Catcher HOU .681 CLE .664 BOS .559 1B BOS .778 HOU .744 CLE .726 2B HOU .830 CLE .699 BOS .683 3B CLE .977 HOU .899 BOS .692 SS CLE .885 BOS .847 HOU .741 LF BOS .853 CLE .767 HOU .709 CF HOU .757 BOS .705 CLE .624 RF BOS 1.061 HOU .741 CLE .722 DH BOS .940 HOU .826 CLE .793 Defense by UZR/150 BOS 8.2 CLE 6.7 HOU -2.3
  20. JD should bat 4th, because it's the best place to put him, not because his OPS is slightly better there. On the Astros, they remind me of us last year. Many players are having a down year at the same time. One could view it like they are bound to bounce back just in time for the playoffs, but I'm not so sure. 2017>2018 (in order or most PAs in 2017) .957> .830 Altuve .889> .781 Springer .827 .817> .720 Gurriel .847> .692 Reddick .907> .733 Gonzalez .941> .741 Correo .759> .611 McCann .767> .764 Gattis .815> .656 Marisnick .853
  21. Assuming Sale, price, ERod & Porcello start the first 4 playoff games, we could have a radically different looking pen, and you are right about us getting a good look at these guys in their new roles. This could be our playoff pen (listed from most likely to least likely to make the pen roster): Kimbrel Eovaldi Wright Barnes (if healthy) Brasier Johnson or Velazquez (probably not both) Thornburg (bubble, but he has done great vs lefties over his career) Outside looking in as of now: Velazquez or Johnson Pomeranz Workman Poyner Hembree Kelly Scott Cuevas
  22. Pretty amazing after such a nice run before this last one, but I'm leaning towards agreement. He still has time to turn it around, but the guy has sucked for too long to be trustworthy right now. Barnes is iffy. Hembree is trying to lose his slot as well, if he hasn't already. Pardon me, if I am not that high on Brasier. We may be looking at a playoff relief set-up like this (assuming 7 man pen): 6th inning: Velazquez/Johnson (Wright/Eovaldi as long men) 7th inning: Wright/Eovaldi 8th inning: Eovaldi/Wright (as shortman), Brasier, Thornburg (Workman?) 9th inning: Kimbrel
  23. It's an airtight, 100% lock, and I'm as sane as ever.
  24. How does Phillips solve the poor 3B defense problem?
  25. But, a .290 vs a .240 hitter is not much of a difference either. It's 1 hit more out of 20 PAs. It's 30 more hits out of 600 PAs. If a great defender gets 30 less hits but makes 40 more plays, couldn't one say the defense outweighed the offense? (Note: perhaps only the SS position allows for a 30-50 play swing between a great ranged SS and a poor one.)
