  1. It's called doing the right thing. This game is meaningless. The only thing Cora needs to do now is make sure everyone is rested, not injured (as best he can) and not too rested come October.
  2. Tonight's update: Eovaldi solidified his spot on the playoff roster. He was probably a lock beforehand. Workman takes a step back, but he's still got a good chance to make it. Brasier is still looking like a lock, despite the HR.
  3. A strong pitching staff can and will carry a poor offense much more than one hitter batting .750 not .550.
  4. Can you explain why Bogey is dead last in DRS over the last 2, 3, 4 or 5 years?
  5. Perhaps the biggest profit these owners make is when they sell the team at an exponential number from their cost at purchase
  6. He didn't do all that well for us year one in Boston. He was great in SD before coming here: 2.47 ERA /1.059 WHIP, but so-so with us: 4.59/ 1.369. He's had 1 good year out of 2.5.
  7. Sale's absence has not really hurt the team. Our 6th, 7th and 8th starters have helped us win many games. We're 17-8 in Sale starts (.680) 9-3 Johnson 5-2 Velazquez 3-1 Wright Total 17-6 (.739) Of course how the team did when Sale didn't start doesn't matter, but it really didn't hurt the team to have to find starters to take his place. (We are 5-4 in Eovaldi starts.)
  8. Not to me. I love it when he spends, except on HRam & Pablito. I'm not sure he'll always want to spend like this year.
  9. I wouldn't be upset if Verlander or Snell won, but I'd definitely take Sale over Snell. Verlander's extra innings and GS'd are worth a lot. His 52 more IP is 34% of Sale's total. He starter 7 more games than Sale. One could think about it this way, What are Verlander's stats over his best 25 games and compare those to Sale's, if they are close, then look at his "extra 7 starts." What if his ERA is 4.50 in his worst 7 starts. Is that something in his favor? Now, if it's 3.30, then that has enormous value. Here's what I came up with: Verlander's first 24 starts: 156 IP (close to Sale) 2.19 ERA .581 OPS against This is close to Sale, but it is still a little worse. Now, look at his "extra" 8 starts (his last 8): 45 IP (about what he has more than Sale) 4.34 ERA .742 OPS against While this has some value, it's not overpowering value.
  10. So can the sailor. He doesn't have to pay room and board.
  11. Drunken sailors don't spend a lot?
  12. He gets the job done. Will I be biting my nails, when he walks 2 to start an inning? Of course, but look around, other pen guys are walking one and giving up a homer. BTW, Kimbrel has looked scarier than Wright over the last month or tow.
  13. Yes, but I'll take... .254 27 86 (.748 OPS) for his first 688 PAs of his career. I'm still way more worried about his defense.
  14. This year... ERA- 43 Sale (Better than Kluber last year) 49 Snell 66 Verlander (significantly behind) WHIP 0.84 Sale 0.93 Verlander 0.98 Snell SIERA 2.29 Sale 2.72 Verlander 3.35 Snell OPS Against .516 Sale (This number is like Sandy Leon x 9.) .572 Snell .619 Verlander (more than 100 points lower) I get the IP is very important. I'm not saying Sale deserves it. It's close. Tie goes to Sandy Leon for Cy Young due to what he's done with Sale & Price.
  15. Kluber deserved it last year. ERA- 49 Kluber 63 Sale (not even close) WHIP 0.87 Kluber 0.97 Sale OPS Against .603 Sale .621 Kluber SIERA 2.59 Sale 2.68 Kluber (very close)
  16. I used to bet...mostly on the NFL. I think I won more than I lost, but one Sunday, my two friends and I lost 27 of 28 bets placed. One of my friends then bet all he owed on Steve Carlton & the Phillies to win his money back. He lost and had to work for the bookie for months. I've never bet since then.
  17. There were zero Yankee slips of paper in the hat.
  18. I don't gamble, so the question was not really relevant. If my name was on 99 pieces of paper and yours was on one, I wouldn't bet on my name being chosen from a hat. I was 100% sure, and that's all I can say.
  19. I'm worried about PBs, but not Wright's ability to baffle hitters and get late inning outs. I'm also not worried about bringing him in with men on. He's the best we have after Kimbrel and maybe Brasier.
  20. I'm admitting I don't gamble. I was 100% sure we had it on the night of 8/5/18.
  21. Snell has 164: Sale has 150.
  22. I should have added, I don't think this is what the Sox do. It's just what I'd do. If we want to seriously contend next year, and Henry is fine with spending like a drunken sailor, then yes, I keep Porcello, Kimbrel & Kinsler plus maybe Pearce and look for pen help somehow. A lot may depend on how we finish 2018. I want Leon as my catcher next year with Sale & Price.
  23. This what gets me the most. I kept thinking I saw some improvement, and then the next year he stayed the same or even got worse. He's been yo-yoing. I don't look at UZR/150 until at least half way through a season, unless I'm looking at 2-3 year samples for a discussion. I like to go by what I observe and then look at the numbers to see, if they back up my thoughts. They usually do. Here's how I have viewed his progression: I gave him a pass year 1 & 2, as they jerked him around a little by using him at 3B and then re-signing Drew. He did better year 3 (2015), and I had hopes he'd keep improving. He was plus 2.9 on UZR/150 and just -1 on DRS. He looked worse in 2016, and quite frankly, that pissed me off. I even suggested (again) we move him to 3B. He seemed to improve a little in 2017, but I didn't think he played as well as 2015- better but not his best. He's looked better this year, so it's nice to see 2 years in a row of getting better, but I still only put him slightly better than he looked in 2015, so it's hard to say he's at his best or "peaked" or about to "peak." I'm glad he's gotten better, although the DRS numbers have him at his all time worst (-17) this year). I'm happy with Bogey as our SS. He's hitting great, his defense seems better, and we don't have anybody else, really.
  24. I'd place Bogey below the mean and average line with other MLB short stops. If someone wants to call him average, I won't argue too much, but I keep hearing people say he's better than average, and I just can't be silent to that.
  25. Trying not to laugh so hard I bust a gut!
