    This from MLBTR on the Sox 2019 budget... ...The Red Sox will try to minimize their tax bill and ensure that they avoid hitting the $246 million threshold at which point their top draft pick is dropped 10 spots. It seems overwhelmingly likely that they will incur the 12 percent surtax for exceeding $226 million in luxury tax payroll, but, again, I expect that they will avoid the 42.5 percent surtax for exceeding $246 million in luxury tax payroll. Provided that they plan to leave a little space for in-season acquisitions, let’s peg them at a spending level that enables the club to replace Craig Kimbrel at the back of the bullpen without breaking the bank.     So true. You win by having good players. Good players get paid a lot and get raises. It's nearly impossible to keep all the good players without eventually spending through the roof. A team need periodic, low-cost youth infusion. The team we have now had those infusions 2-5 years ago in Betts, Bogey, JBJ, Barnes, Beni, Devers and others. Who is going to be our next Beni or Devers? Is anyone close to their skill level and close to ML ready right now? Filling key roles with players like Chavis, Shawaryn, Lakins and Lin is not likely going to lead to the same results as the infusion mentioned above.

    There is a players only meeting where all this is decided before the playoffs begin.

    Eovaldi, Kimbrel and Kelly need to be replaced or re-signed. Guys like Johnson or Velazquez might have to be traded to fill some of those open slots.

    Cots has us estimated at $18.5M over the luxury tax after arb signings. If we sign Eovaldi to $15M per year, we'll be just $6.5M under the $40M line. We still need pen help and may want some money for summer pick-ups. It only gets scarier in 2020 and 2021, despite losing Pablo's contract.

    Coaches almost always get full shares. The Yankees gave way less shares than the Sox this year. They released who got theirs (and who did not).

    Yes, and Velazquez still has 2 options remaining. If everyone is healthy, and we pick up a couple pitchers this winter, Velazquez might start in AAA, no matter how well he does in ST'ing.

    You'd think you should be able to be at least a decent contender spending one dollar below the luxury tax limit, no matter what, right? However, if you have 5 guys making $110M and you add $15M for the players' benefits, there's not a whole lot left to fill the other 20 slots on the roster, assuming the team goes under the luxury line for one season.

    I hate Oklahoma & Ohio St. Who makes it, if Georgia, Oklahoma and Ohio St all lose? I can't see UCF, Michigan or Texas making it.

    If we reset the year before, then he'll already have experienced a downturn during his last season.

    I like Dalbec more than Chavis (GMs may feel the same) and think he may move to 1B at some point. If Devers ends up moving to 1B eventually, then I certainly prefer Dalbec to Chavis.

    Hembree does have 3 years of control, and maybe they could flip him for a prospect, but yes, they would want more... Maybe Johnson, Swihart & Chavis.

    This is an underpay by any view. Travis and Swihart are close to worthless. The idea of trading Johnson to fill the closer role is not appealing to you? Plus, we'd have money to spend on a starter that is better than Johnson (maybe Eovaldi).

    Losing Mookie would be like losing our heart and soul plus all the numbers. I know, we just proved we could win without Big Papi, our former heart & soul guy, but losing Mookie would be a cliff by itself.

    I assumed "hitting like he used to" meant like his last full season not like his MVP year. 2018 OBP with Pedey's 2017 season mixed in: .438 Betts .402 JD .394 Pearce (w/BOS only) .369 Pedey (2017) .366 Beni .362 Holt .360 Bogey .325 Moreland As you can see, many players are close to Pedey's .369, except for Moreland, so maybe Pedey 3rd vs RHPs might do better than Moreland in that slot, but I still like Bogey up 3rd. The 5 slot gets more RBO opportunities than the 3, so keeping Bogey 5th is okay, but I like Devers up 5th going forward. It's no biggie. Having Pedey back close to form is a great problem to have. The hard part may be getting Holt & Nunez enough PAs, not who bats where.

    The team also stuck to the fundamentals and reduced bonehead plays and lack-of-focus mistakes. Cora is the best!
