  1. How does it help the upper minors by drafting a rule 5 guy that has to stay on the 25 man roster? Maybe by attrition? The problem is, we have too many bubble pitchers out of options, like Johnson, Hembree & Workman.
  2. A decent amount of time? DD has been in charge of the farm for 3 cycles, now. We will need youth infusion by 2020 and 2021. We shouldn't ever stink, if we keep spending, and if our reset year we still spend near the luxury tax level, but there almost certainly will be, IMO, a season or two where we are not really contenders.
  3. Big win for the Irish. Here's how I'd think they will rank them after this weekend: 1) Alabama (Plays Georgia next week) 2) Clemson (One could argue ND played a tougher schedule and deserves the 2 slot.) 3) Notre Dame (Win vs Michigan not so great looking now.) 4) Georgia (Plays Alabama next week.) 5) Oklahoma (Plays Texas next week and makes it with a win and Georgia loss.) 6) Ohio State (Plays N'Western and needs GA & OK to lose.) 7) UCF (QB out- tough luck.) 8) Michigan 9) Texas 10) Florida What would happen if Georgia beats Alabama? 1) Clemson 2) ND 3) GA 4) Ala 5) OK/Ohio St If Alabama wins, it looks like Oklahoma goes over Ohio State (and GA), assuming both win their conference championships.
  4. I'm never giving up hope, but I'm not counting on anything.
  5. NL parks still present issues that might be helped a little, if JD could play 1B.
  6. At least it's not a daddy issue.
  7. He said that when he came up this year, too. Didn't he?
  8. Agreed, but we would be a worse team without him. If he's the only guy we lose, we could still be highly competitive, if we stay strong every where else, bit the "how" is focal point.
  9. Projected 25 man roster: RED: Out of option trade candidate to make room for rule 5 or 3rd FA signing. 12 Pitchers: Sale, Price, Porcello, ERod, _____ Johnson, Velzaquez, Wright (DL) _____, Barnes, Brasier, Thornburg (trade?), Hembree, Workman Vaz (trade?), Leon (trade?), Swihart Moreland & Pearce Holt & Pedey (DL) Bogey & Lin (AAA?) Devers & Nunez Beni, JBJ, Betts & JD
  10. Yes, we wouldn't miss Marco or Shepherd, and even if we sign Eovaldi and a RP'er, we could squeeze a place on the 25 man roster, if Pedey starts on the DL and we deal Swihart and an out of options player like Hembree, Workman or Johnson.
  11. Well said. I'm glad DDis at the helm right now, and I hope we can see some farm growth real soon. We have a few promising prospects that could move up. We could use a hit on an international signing, soo. It's been a while.
  12. We certainly have some DFA candidates to maybe try a rule 5 pick. I think the current opening is for a FA signing.
  13. I'm not ashamed to defend a GM who got us a ring AND built a top 3 farm system in the process. He also cleaned up the Beckett/CC mess, brought in Uehara and set up DD for what we see today. Ben clearly made some big blunders, whether or not he was the mastermind behind them. DD took a different route and got us a ring. I'm happy with celebrating both GMs. It doesn't have to be one vs the other.
  14. Who's talking a deal?
  15. The talk was about what JBJ might be worth as a FA in 2 years. Cain was a good comp.
  16. ...so Cora really wants us to acquire a defensive 3Bman despite all our other higher needs and the fact that we already have Lin?
  17. I've always thought any offense JBJ gives us is gravy, but I do see an upside with his offense. It's not fantasy. The guy hit over .830 for over 900 straight PAs (2015 to the start of 2017). He had his longest consistent streak of his career this year (from late May through the playoffs). I'm not saying I expect .790-.830 consistently going forward, but it wouldn't surprise me. If he has a couple decent years, he may get $15-18M in a contract.
  18. It's pretty close.... JBJ 2015-2018 (Last 4 years) .772 OPS Cain 2014-2017 (4 years before signing) .789 OPS Before his FA year, Cain had just one season with an OPS over .751 (160+ PAs) JBJ has had 2 over .830. I'm kinda thinking JBJ has more offensive "upside", if he can keep the consistency he found the last 4 months of this season (.787 last 98 games, not counting the playoffs).
  19. I'm glad DD sacrificed some of the future to win it all. It worked. The ring vindicates it all, but it doesn't erase the effects all his moves will have down the road. Yes, some felt he went too far. I was critical of a few moves and loved others. All his moves were designed to build the best team possible for a 4-5 year window. That's a pretty long window, and I am extremely happy for that, but the window was always going to close. The question is when, how much and for how long. To me, it's all about when (not if) we re-set the luxury tax. If I'm wrong about resetting at some point, then great! It's only my opinion, but I am pretty certain Henry prioritizes a re-set by 2021. He may even re-set for 2020, depending how things look after 2019, but I think keeping the window open for one more year (at max tax rates) willbe too appealing to give up. There's no hard feeling here. There's no lamenting or crying about an upcoming 1 or 2 year low point. I expected it. I praised the overall plan. What's not to like about 5 straight years of high competitiveness? If we end up with just one ring, it was all worth it, but 2 or 3 would be awesome!
  20. Lots of "ifs". Yes, it is likely some of my projections were low, but that's why I put the "+" next to the lowish number. I could certainly see... $35M Betts $33M Sale $30M Price $28M Bogey $23M JD $15M JBJ $14M Pedey That's about $180M for just 7 out of 40 roster slots.
  21. I'm assuming he remains consistent on offense going forward. Big if? Maybe.
  22. A lot depends on how much DD can spend in 2020. If Henry allows one more year within the window, we can probably stay a top 4 contender in 2020. To me, 2021 is the moment of a sharp downturn.
  23. I think 2021 is the reset year. Pedey won't leave money on the table. We can't pay all this... $30M Price $30+M Betts $28+M Sale $22+M Bogey $20+M JD $18+M JBJ $14M Pedey and keep some of the Porcellos, Eovaldis, and whatever closer we pick up. We'll also start seeing arb raises for Beni, ERod, and others. (We can compete in 2020, if we spend heavy.)
  24. I agree on the two year window, then a reset. It would be great to sign Eovaldi to 2 years, so we can reset without losing everybody. I doubt he takes 2 years, but if we offer him more, maybe he will. I big 3 year option buyout might help. Then, sign a Rp'er to 2 years and roll the dice.
  25. It sure is! Being a top contender for 2019 is gravy! Great job, DD. Super job, Cora! I'm lovin' the ride.
