  1. Players with zero options: Wright Johnson Workman Hembree Swihart Leon Vaz Nunez Pearce Porcello
  2. Big games next week: #1 Alabama vs #4 Georgia (Atlanta, GA Sat 4pm) #5 Oklahoma vs #9 Texas (at Arlington, TX Sat Noon) #6 Ohio St. vs #21 N'Western (Indianapolis, IN Sat 8pm) #2 Clemson vs Pittsburgh (previously ranked in top 25) (Charlotte, NC Sat 8pm) #7 UCF vs Memphis (unranked) (Orlando, FL Sat 3:30)
  3. I agree, and it is good for ND to avoid Alabama in the first round, but I'm still not sure why Clemson is ahead of ND. Who have they beat? Clemson beat... #22 Texas A & M (by 2 points- will be higher ranked now after beating LSU) #20 Syracuse by 4 Wake by 60 NC St by 34 So Carolina by 21 Louisville by 61 GA Tech by 28 FL St by 49 GA Southern by 31 Furman by 41 They play #21 Pitt next week. ND beat... #4 Michigan by 7 (will be ranked lower after loss this week) #19 N'Western by 10 (will be ranked higher this week) #20 Syracuse by 33 (will be ranked higher) #24 Pitt by 2 (lost to Miami this week) Stanford by 21 (was ranked when we beat them) Wake by 29 (a decent team) USC by 7 Va Tech by 22 FL St by 29 Navy by 22 Vandy by 5 Ball St by 8
  4. The big question is does he start the season on the DL, the 60 day DL (which prolongs a roster move) or active?
  5. Buch, Douby and Koji did noticeably better in 2013 than 2012 or 2014, but Lester was better in 2014, Tazawa was better both other years and Lackey was about the same in 2013 as 2014.
  6. The pitching ups and downs were more noticeable. ERA in 2013 in order of IP (2012) (2014) 3.75 Lester (4.82) (2.52) 3.53 Lackey (5.23 Beckett) (3.60) 4.57 Dempster (5.65 Cook) (4.43 RDLR) 4.32 Doub (4.86) (6.07) 1.74 Buch (4.56) (5.34) 1.09 Uehara (6.20 Melancon) (2.52) 3.16 Tazawa (1.43) (2.86) 4.04 Peavy (3.77 F Morales/8.28 Dice-K) (4.72) 1.81 Breslow (6.22 Bard) (2.29 Badenhop) 4.97 Workman (1.58 Atchison) (5.17) 4.86 Aceves (5.36) (4.11 Kelly)
  7. Out of the 6 returning players from 2012, 4 had worse years in 2013 (Pedey, Papi, Nava & Middy). Out of the 4 players that returned to meaningful roles in 2014, all did better in 2013 than 2014.
  8. We did get some up seasons from several players, but it wasn't as big a deal as many think it was. Let's a have a look-see: In order of most PAs in 2013 2013 OPS (2012 OPS) (2014 OPS) .787 Pedey (.797) (.712) .781 Ellsbury (.682) (.531 JBJ) .959 Ortiz (1.026) (.873) .842 Napoli (.812 AGon) (.789i) .831 Nava (.835) (.706) .801 Vic (.675 Sweeney/.674 Podsednik) (.812 Betts) .777 Drew (.663 Aviles) (.660 Bogey) .804 Salty (.742) (.611 AJ P) .696 Middy (.835) (.711 Holt) .772 Gomes (.807 Cody Ross) (.683) .885 Carp (.692 Youk) (.710 Cespedes) .785 Iggy (.705 Ciriaco) (.583 Drew)
  9. It's pretty close between Ohio St and Oklahoma, and with OK playing Texas next week, who is better than N'Western, I can't see Ohio St squeaking in without help from Texas. The only reason I mentioned the #2 and #3 rankings between Clemson and ND is if Alabama loses to Georgia. That would make ND or Clemson #1 and their opponent would be different. Clemson ND GA AL or ND Clem GA AL is a big difference as one team plays AL in the first round. I doubt Georgia wins, but still...
  10. Keep improving like he showed last year. It is telling that we pretty much signed Pablo, because Holt failed to win the 3B job, and we ended up trading for and re-signing Nunez as insurance for Holt as Pedey's back-up. Then, we still ended up trading for Kinsler and using Phillips at 2B last year over Holt.
  11. We had some hard luck in 2012 and made a lot of changes besides just the Napoli, Vic, Drew and Dempster signings. I loved the Uehara pick-up at the time. We still had Lester, Lackey, Buch and Doubront. We still had Papi, Ellsbury, Pedey and some depth. I thought the 2012 team was better than .500 on paper, especisally before the season started, so I expected a bounce back in 2013 before all the signings.
  12. I actually think our pen is a higher priority than filling a rotation slot, but Wright's injury is worrisome. I wouldn't feel comfortable starting the year with just Johnson, Velzquez and Shawaryn as our 5th starter and starter depth. If I knew Wright was going to be okay, I'd feel better about that plan. I'd love Eovaldi, but I would not want to give him 3 or more years. That might mean we won't bring him back. I'd be okay with that, if we sign 2 solid pen arms, one of whom can close. Then, maybe sign a 6th starter type as insurance.
  13. I thought all those teams were good enough to compete (2012-2015). Now, highly competitive might be another story.
  14. Some of Ohio State's wins were very ugly. They barely beat a bad Nebraska. They got lucky vs Maryland. Beat Penn St by 1. I'm not sure their schedule was tougher. OK beat... UCLA #25 IA St. Lost to #14 Texas TCU OK St #13 W VA play #14 Texas again Ohio St. played Oregon St TCU Indiana #12 Penn St Lost to unranked Purdue (worse than a loss to Texas) Mich St Maryland #4 Michigan
  15. I seriously think DD is not even looking to add a 2Bman this winter. We have too many greater needs and too many capable players on the roster now who can play 2B. Pedroia Holt Nunez Lin Marco H. (Maybe Chavis or Swihart in a pinch) Save some budget space for the summer, and if we need to, we can go out and get someone like Kinsler again.
  16. In theory, trading Johnson & Swihart for a better 6th starter (ML ready) makes sense, especially if the guy we get has options remaining, but it's not always easy to do when most teams are facing rule 5 roster crunches.
  17. They look pretty close to me, but HV has been better in MLB and AAA. He's older, too. Both look like decent 6th starters/ long relief guys to me. Counting on more is wishful thinking.
  18. Mo & Edgar. The others can wait.
  19. How does it help the upper minors by drafting a rule 5 guy that has to stay on the 25 man roster? Maybe by attrition? The problem is, we have too many bubble pitchers out of options, like Johnson, Hembree & Workman.
  20. A decent amount of time? DD has been in charge of the farm for 3 cycles, now. We will need youth infusion by 2020 and 2021. We shouldn't ever stink, if we keep spending, and if our reset year we still spend near the luxury tax level, but there almost certainly will be, IMO, a season or two where we are not really contenders.
  21. Big win for the Irish. Here's how I'd think they will rank them after this weekend: 1) Alabama (Plays Georgia next week) 2) Clemson (One could argue ND played a tougher schedule and deserves the 2 slot.) 3) Notre Dame (Win vs Michigan not so great looking now.) 4) Georgia (Plays Alabama next week.) 5) Oklahoma (Plays Texas next week and makes it with a win and Georgia loss.) 6) Ohio State (Plays N'Western and needs GA & OK to lose.) 7) UCF (QB out- tough luck.) 8) Michigan 9) Texas 10) Florida What would happen if Georgia beats Alabama? 1) Clemson 2) ND 3) GA 4) Ala 5) OK/Ohio St If Alabama wins, it looks like Oklahoma goes over Ohio State (and GA), assuming both win their conference championships.
  22. I'm never giving up hope, but I'm not counting on anything.
  23. NL parks still present issues that might be helped a little, if JD could play 1B.
  24. At least it's not a daddy issue.
  25. He said that when he came up this year, too. Didn't he?
