  1. I get that, and I don't think DD is done. I do think he's done spending large and long as the reset looms. I realize nobody here knows what budget restrictions DD has for this year and beyond, but if we go on the assumption that he can't go over $40M this year and must reset after 2019 or 2020, then his hands are tied. If the pen is viewed as more important than our OF (trade JBJ), or IF (trade Bogey) or our rotation (trade Porcello), then maybe we'll see something like this happen. While I value the pen, I value the players I listed above more. If we could trade Nunez & Moreland to free up enough space for Ottavino, I'd do it, but I'm not sure it's possible. More likely, we make a modest trade for a low cost RP'er (Chavis/Swihart/Shawaryn) and then sign the RP'er left over after free agency picks over the best (maybe Cody Allen or B Brach). I realize that may not be enough to placate those who value the pen more than I do or more than other positions, but the cat is out of the bag. We can't undo past spending, unless we trade salary and open a new gap.
  2. I agree, but the thinking might be that the created budget space would allow us to improve our pen by more than our OF defense suffers by trading JBJ. Again, I'm not for trading JBJ, but I'm not sure what the plans are for this club to reset. If their plan is to reset after 2019 and JBJ is not in their 2020 plans, then this deal now makes more sense, especially if trading JBJ allows us to greatly improve our pen.
  3. Because we chose to spend more elsewhere. We chose to upgrade other areas and have spent way more than any other team in MLB to get where we were last year and are this year. Just assuming we will or should just spend more to upgrade our last area of need may not be realistic within the boundaries Henry sets for DD on spending limits- not just for this year, but maybe to plan for a reset after 2019 or 2020.
  4. I'd hate to see the Sox trade my favorite player, JBJ, but it does make some sense. It would allow us to get a RP'er and stay under the $40M mark this year, and it would help us get under the luxury tax line after 2019, if we choose to reset for 2020. I guess trading JBJ would mean JD, Holt, Pearce and maybe others like Swihart, Nunez, Moreland or Lin play more OF. We could see Moreland at 1B, Pearce at DH and JD in LF/RF for a few games. We lose heavily on defense, but on offense, we may stay about even. (Note" I do NOT want to trade JBJ. I'd rather trade Bogey or Porcello.)
  5. MLBTRs reports.. Of the pricey veterans the Red Sox reportedly considered trading last month, they “pushed” center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. harder than anyone else, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic hears (subscription required). However, the Red Sox couldn’t find a deal to their liking for JBJ, Rosenthal notes. The Diamondbacks were the only team publicly connected to Bradley around that time, though there were conflicting reports about whether they were truly interested in him. As of now, it seems the soon-to-be 29-year-old Bradley will once again man center in Boston in 2019, his second-last second of arbitration eligibility. Bradley will make a projected $7.9MM during the upcoming season.
  6. Maybe we can get both Allen and Brach on one year deals.
  7. $40M/3 with an apparent 4th year option bringing it to $50-55M/4. I'm glad we didn't try to outbid on this one.
  8. Yes, and don't be surprised if JBJ has a career year. Beni, too.
  9. This is certainly not an "off year." I know the saying about standing still is really going backwards, but in our case, I don't see it that way. With Eovaldi here from day one, we are better on paper for opening day. Hopefully, players who misses time with injuries will return to form, and we won't have major health issues in 2019. To me, injuries are our biggest concern. (I'm assuming we add a pen piece.)
  10. Better than an AL team.
  11. MLBTR reports... Pitching has gone from a weakness to a strength for the Red Sox over the last five seasons, and Alex Speier of the Boston Globe details how the club upgraded its scouting and development system to better identify talent and then further build on that talent once on the Sox roster. Speier delves into the team’s acquisition of Nathan Eovaldi at the trade deadline, and how Eovaldi took on some tips from pitching coach Dana LeVangie and assistant pitching coach Brian Bannister to make his fastball more of a weapon. These tweaks and an increased usage of his curveball took Eovaldi’s performance up another notch (after he already pitching well for the Rays) after joining the Red Sox, and he then was one of the stars of Boston’s World Series run.
  12. Next year will be the off year.
  13. For the most part, players are underpaid for the first part of their career, and only a few get paid like kings once they reach free agency. The owners must not mind overpaying, and sometimes big and long contracts do work out. The ones that don't are more than made up for by the under paid. I agree, the system should be improved, and I've always wondered why the players go along with a system where only a select few make a huge chunk of the money.
  14. I think we're fine as is, but if we end up with juts Allen, Brach or Herrera (or maybe 2 of them), I'll like our chances even more.
  15. Did Soria sign, too?
  16. Even if the Yanks get Britton and rge Cards sign Kimbrel, Lets say the Braves get Miller or Ottavino. Who would we be in competition with us over the left-overs.
  17. Who is really desperate to get a solid closer and has the will to spend heavily to get one? MLBTR projected these deals: $70M/4 Kimbrel $33M/3 Britton $30M/3 Ottavino $27M/3 A Miller $18M/2 J Soria $16M/2 Cody Allen $12M/2 Brad Brach $8M/1 K Herrera What teams will go all out to get one of these guys? The Yanks will probably sign Britton, especially if they miss out on Machado/Harper. The Cards, Sox and Braves seem to belookinng for a clser, but how much will they offer? My guess is someone pretty good will end up settling on a 1 year deal or a lower than projected 2-3 year deal after 3 or 4 of these guys are signed.
  18. Hopefully less than Robertson.
  19. To me, the main issue with bringing CK back is the money and years. I think it is worth the risk of finding someone else that is cheaper and hopefully younger. CK could decline quickly. The guy we get could end up doing better. I could be wrong on both of these statements.
  20. Make you wonder if Kimbrel's struggles were just a blip or a sign of impending decline.
  21. I swore off the game thread numerous times, for just that reason.
  22. They got their ring. No more sympathy~
  23. The years and amount seem low.
  24. It's a wonderful feeling, isn't it. What makes it more precious is the fact that we've won 4 rings 15 years, after I went 34 years of agony and frustration. Thank, Theo, Ben & DD (and even Dan D for laying a nice foundation for Theo).
  25. Not yet. One personal connection I will always have with Kimbrel, is that I hold him responsible for my literally busting a gut screaming at the TV during his "saves" in the playoffs.
