MLB.com...Red Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi will have surgery to address loose bodies in his elbow, a source told MLB.com. The procedure would sideline Eovaldi for 4-6 weeks, according to a report from WEEI's Rob Bradford. The team has not yet commented. Eovaldi had a similar operation in 2018 and missed two months while a member of the Rays. Eovaldi, who re-signed with the Red Sox for four years this winter, has had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow twice.

I doubt notin is advocating trading Devers before finding out if Dalbec is the real deal or not. He just suggested him as a possible call-up and maybe eventual 3Bman. (Maybe Devers will be moved to 1B next year and not traded.)

He's actually 3rd on the 40 man roster seniority list behind Pedey & Vazquez (4th, if you count Wright).

It could be that. I'm just wondering, if something changed between the statement Cora made and the choice to play Chavis at 2B. I'm fine with the choice, even though I am a big defensive-minded fan.

True, but Cora chooses who to play at 2B: Lin or Chavis. When he said Chacis would not play 2B, was he expecting some other choice being made by DD? Was he expecting Nunez or Holt to be beck by today?

Heck, we played Bogey at 3B smack in the midst of a playoff run after just 10 games at 3B in the minors. It's not panic: it's just what you do when your top 3 guys on the 2B depth chart are on the IL. It was a choice of offense vs defense. Today, Cora chose defense. Maybe his statements were made before he found out one of our 2Bman wouldn't be ready by today.

I hear ya. I'm not ready to totally count him out, but we should not plan on another inning or PA from him.

True, but my guess is several GMs would give something valuable to get him. They know he will not end up with a .400 OPS this year. (Note: I do NOT waant JBJ traded.)

Dustin Pedroia is also hopeful of a minimum IL stint as he recovers from his latest knee problem, telling media (including Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald) that his injury was “just a weird freak thing” rather than a more serious setback. The Red Sox second baseman explained that his cleat caught in the dirt while he was swinging during Wednesday’s game, leading to an ominous-sounding popping feeling in his knee when it failed to turn along with the rest of his body. Given that knee injuries have limited to Pedroia to just nine games since the start of the 2018 season, he admitted that the pop “more kind of scared me than anything….We’re going to let it calm down for a few days and it should be all right. It just twisted the wrong way.” Given Pedroia’s recent injury history, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Sox wait beyond the 10-day minimum to activate him from the IL. Well said, but I will add that the argument that "He was never given a real chance" implies he deserved one, and that he never got one. I disagree on both fronts. Besides, he actually got a pretty long look when he was the starter for about a half a year. He hit decently that year (good for a catcher), but never showed growth on defense or "staff-handling." He started the next season, and when they saw no further growth on defense, he was quickly (and rightfully) replaced- pretty much for good as a catcher. He got a pretty good look last year, when Vaz got hurt, and again did not distinguish himself. How many prospects, who never did great in the minors, sticks around so long with much of it on the ML roster? I'm okay with what happened, but I get worked up when people say, "He never got a chance!" IMO, he got more chances (including looks at other positions), more time and more looks than anyone with his record deserved. I can name dozens of ex-Sox prospects who had great minor league careers and got 1/10th the chances Swihart got. Some, who went elsewhere proved they never belonged, but even if Swihart goes on to prove he does belong, I will still believe we gave him more opportunities than he deserved.

Chavis' bat was ready last year. He'll likely never improve enough at any position to be deemed ML ready on defense, so why not see what he's got? With 3 infielders on the IL, this is far from "panic". Also, I thought moving Travis Shaw to 2B was dumb for the Brewers, but he has not been a catastrophe.

Pedroia, Nunez AND Holt!

I think the guy got more chances than his performance deserved. The whole "He never got a real chance" argument rings hollow to me. He did nothing since AA ball way back in 2014 to warrant being given an extended look anywhere. IMO, Sox management bent over backwards to accommodate him and help him find any way to stick in the bigs. There was a time I had high hopes for Swihart, as many of us did. I hope he finds a way to get that long extended look-see, just so we can all know what player he really is.
