He can DH as we rest JBJ, Betts, Beni of JD. He might play some 3B, but I doubt he sees much time at 1B until Mitch reaches his mid summer swoon.

Vaz & Leon no longer have to look over their shoulder. The trade will mark the turning point and the major difference maker of the season. (Sarcasm alert!)

I thought the last 365 days is pretty simple. Look, I agree that on paper, they look worse than the Sox and Yanks, but they have player pretty damn well for a full year. It's no fluke. These guys are very good. The Yanks are dropping like flies and have a minor league team for half their current roster. The Sox have had some recent injuries that could be troubling. My point was that if they stay healthy they will stay competitive to the end. I'm not projecting a Rays ring. I still am fully on board with us winning it all...again.

Yes, I "cherry-picked 59 games, but that's not really a small sample size. How about since June 22nd? 70-36 That's 106 games. What size sample do we need to go beyond the words luck, fluke and Cinderella? Last 365 days: 100-65 Red Sox 99-65 Rays

They always "overachieve." If they can stay healthy, they will surprise. They were very good at the end of last year (28-11 in last 39), so this is no fluke. They are 42-17 in their last 59 games. That's a sample size approaching legit. True, they will not continue at this pace, but they are contenders.

The international pool money is nice, but it's not that much. The Diamondbacks have acquired catcher Blake Swihart from the Red Sox, per a club announcement. International pool money is also going to Arizona in the deal — $500K in spending capacity, GM Mike Hazen tells reporters including Zach Buchanan of The Athletic (Twitter links) — with outfield prospect Marcus Wilson going to Boston in return. I'm kind of glad the catcher debate is over.

It sounded like the original Leon-Swihart choice was about as close to a coin-flip as can be, so I don't think calling up Leon after such a poor start, small sample size or not, was a panic move. I admit I was surprised they didn't give Swihart a longer look, but I don't think it takes to long to evaluate defensive improvement vs stagnation. I don't think the Chavis call-up was "panic" either. We need a bat. Our 3B defense is horrible, so Chavis at 3B is not really weakening our defense. Maybe the thought is to bench JBJ, put JD in the corner OF and DH Chavis or use him as a back-up at 3B, 1B and in an emergency, 2B.

It's not "panic." Chavis' bat is ML ready, and we have Lin to play 2B. Our offense is ice cold. It's not the first time a team might have to play a poor defensive guy at a position in a pinch.

Chavis has 44 HRs (and 53 2B + 3B) in his last 682 ABs. That's about one XBH every 7 ABs.

These players are... (2019 luxury tax salary included) FA after 2019 20.6 Porcello 6.5 Moreland 6.6 Pearce 5.0 Nunez 3.6 Holt 1.8 Thornburg FA after 2020 20.0 Betts (last arb) 8.6 JBJ (last arb) 2.5 Leon (last arb) 1.3 Wright (last arb) 1.2 Workman (last arb) Some of these guys would bring very little back, even with some of their salaries paid for. To me, the most likely trade candidates would be Porcello, Holt & JBJ.

I think I disagree with everything said here. Porcello will not be offered a QO of over $19M. DHernandez is Porcello's replacement. Johnson stays in the pen, if he even makes the team.
