No way would I trade Devers for WM, let alone add a prospect. Devers & Pedroia for WM & Ian Kennedy... maybe

I'm just a tiny bit concerned on April 24, 2019. If we're still 5-10 back of the WC by the end of May, I'll be somewhat concerned. It's a long season!

Many of the RP'ers discussed as possible signees have sucked so far this year.

I'd be all for moving Bogey to 3B or 2B, but didn't want to open a can of worms until we know Chatham can play at the ML level.

I wanted to save him to PH for JBJ. I like Devers in the clutch (even though clutch does not exist).

I think they felt having Brasier for a full season would make up for Kelly, since he was only good in the first half of 2018 (and the playoffs). Not replacing Kimbrel may haunt DD, but let's see what happens this summer. As long as we make the playoffs, all that matters is what the pen looks like in October.

This year is different. My point was just about last year. Yes, Kimbrel made us a plus pen, but Barnes, Velazquez, Workman, Brasier and Wright gave us over 220 innings of plus relief pitching. While Kelly, Hembree & Johnson gave us over 180 innings of not so great pen work, they weren't horrible enough to bring us below average overall.

Dalbec would not change positions- Devers would, if Dalbec proves he belongs in the bigs.

Barnes had very good numbers. OPS against vs our starters: .697 OPS against vs our relievers: .700 Some individual stats as RP'ers ONLY: ERA Pitcher IP in pen 2.74 Kimbrel 62 3.65 Barnes 62 2.63 Velazquez 55 3.27 Workman 41 1.60 Brasier 34 1.52 Wright 30 3.22 Poyner 22 3.68 Walden 15 3.77 Smith 14 Not horrible: 4.39 Kelly 66 4.20 Hembree 60 4.19Johnson 39

It does seem to match up with our near future holes opening due to free agency: 1B: (Moreland/Pearce) Chavis or Dalbec (or Devers to 1B with Ockimey as a long shot & Casas far away) 2B: (Pedey/Nunez/Holt) Chatham CF: Duran SP: (Porcello) Hernandez/Shawaryn/Houck/Mata) Our best and rising prospects are playing the right positions.

Sorry, I confused you with another poster on starters going deep. Our pen was clearly above average last season. Here are some major standards: Red Sox 2018 Pen Rankings 12th WAR (3.9) 4th ERA- (83 & 2 from 2nd) 11th xFIP (4.05 & just 0.02 from 8th) T11th WHIP (1.29 & just 0.02 from 9th) 8th SIERA (3.70) Nothing here even hints at below average. One could argue they were close to top 3rd tier over middle 3rd.

You talked about how our starters didn't go deep, last year. Just about every stat and metric has us 8th to 12th out of 30 teams in 2018. Not even close to below average.

ERA is not a very good stat to use for RP'ers. They often come in with 1 or 2 outs already. Here are some other Sox pen AL rankings: 2nd SIERA (3.54) 4th in xFIP (4.08) 4th WHIP (1.25) 2nd K/BB (3.06)

Well, if JBJ leaves after 2020 (of if traded earlier), we may play JD in the OF and Chavis at DH or 1B.

MLB.com...Red Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi will have surgery to address loose bodies in his elbow, a source told MLB.com. The procedure would sideline Eovaldi for 4-6 weeks, according to a report from WEEI's Rob Bradford. The team has not yet commented. Eovaldi had a similar operation in 2018 and missed two months while a member of the Rays. Eovaldi, who re-signed with the Red Sox for four years this winter, has had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow twice.
