  1. I don't think it portrays the luxury tax numbers- just straight salaries. It has us $14M+ under the $40M tax line, but I think we are about $4-6M under the luxury tax calculation $40M over line.
  2. I guess, at this point, I should cease being amazed at all the knee-jerk reactionaries in this world.
  3. Worst loss in a long, long time.
  4. All I can say is WTF! It's games like these that really feel like a big punch in the gut.
  5. The tax only applies to the amount over the tax line- morefor anything over the second and third lines. The tax rate goes up each consecutive year going over.
  6. The reset assumption was the foundation of my belief in a "cliff" at some point. If we never reset, we should be able to stay at least somewhat competitive every year, if not, then something is wrong with the GM.
  7. I'd like to see a healthy dose of both- build a nice farm and spend big when and where needed.
  8. Comfort is mythical.
  9. Eovaldi to throw a simulated game... Nathan Eovaldi scheduled to throw simulated game WWW.MLB.COM BOSTON -- Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, who is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow, is expected to throw a simulated game against live batters either Thursday or Friday, but "probably Friday" due to the team's travel schedule. The Red Sox have
  10. Okay, maybe the "hands down" was hyperbole, but I'll take Doerr's numbers over Pedey, and since I never saw Doerr play, that's what I have to go by. (BTW, his best season looks better than Pedey's MVP season- on paper.)
  11. It was a smaller league- not watered down. Plus, you could count on Doerr to be there every year. Dependability has value, too.
  12. Thanks for reminding me. I had forgotten the SF. I loved his HR trot with the one flap down. Classic.
  13. I think Doerr wins hands down. He missed a year due to military service right after his best season of his career. He had 8 seasons over .800 and all 13 of his full seasons over .750. 8 times in the top 24 in MVP voting. Pedey won one MVP, but finished in the voting just 3 times. 6 seasons over .800, including one year with just 302 PAs. 10 out of 11 seasons over .750.
  14. How about Dave Henderson saving himself from the same fate? He flubbed a catch into a HR, then hit one of the biggest HRs in Sox history (off Moore) to redeem himself.
  15. Maybe depends when Lin gets off the IL.
  16. I'd be fine with flipping Devers with Beni. My main wish is for JD to stay batting 4th.
  17. He may be a September call-up. Since Nunez and/or Holt may be gone next year, he may have a chance next ST'ing, but again, I'm not counting on squat.
  18. I'd like Mookie at lead off and second. The only way I'd move Betts to lead off would be to put Bogey 2nd. 1. Betts 2. Bogey 3. Beni 4. JD 5. Devers 6. Moreland-Chavis 7. Chavis- Pearce 8. Vaz 9. JBJ
  19. I'm staying out of the Marco bandwagon crusade. If it happens, I can say "I told you so," but I'll believe it when I see it.
  20. I'm thinking Betts stays with the Sox, some how- some way.
  21. Agreed, and it is very rare for a team to trade a player and then re-sign him that next winter.
  22. JBJ 2018 .502 Up to May 19th .833 May 20-27 (.979 May 20-31) .548 on May 27th JBJ 2019 .421 Up to May 19th 1.081 May 20-27 .552 on May 27th
  23. Sox OPS over the last 28 days: 1.033 Devers .963 JD .952 Vaz .929 Bogey .928 Moreland .864 Chavis .840 Betts .753 Beni .737 JBJ .669 Pearce .653 Leon .625 Nunez 5 guys over .928!!!! 7 guys over .840! 9 guys over .737! Even Leon and Pearce are at or nearing respectability. Only Nunez still looks lost. OPS Against: .468 Walden (61 PAs) .470 Workman (41) .482 Hembree (40) .507 Sale (128) .566 Brasier (38) .571 Weber (57) .593 Lakins (14) .622 Barnes (36) .633 Porcello (132) .658 JSmith (33) .699 Price (47) .706 ERod (125) .788 Brewer (51) .789 Velazquez (70) 1.096 Thornburg (34) .634 Team!
  24. I know longevity matters, and that's why I added the qualifier about who determines the deciding factors. Fisk was here for a over 4,000 PAs, but if someone wants to put Pedey ahead of him, because he has 50% more games with the Sox, I'm fine with that. If longevity (with the Sox) is a major factor, then Pedro, Fisk, Lynn, Nomar, Tiant and others get knocked down significantly, which is okay. One could start another thread on who was the best Sox player for a 5-7 year span. That list may look something like this: 1T Williams & Pedro 3 Clemens 4 Young 5 ???
  25. Good points, and the same can be said of ownership. They do everything they can to protect their profits- sometimes to a fault.
