    In ther context of the days when players routinely played 158-162 games, unless they were hurt, getting 2-4 days off in the first 3rd of a season is a bit beyond that tradition. (I'm not complaining. I want us rested for the playoffs and am 99% sure we make the playoffs.)

    I don't disagree, but I don't see much else on the 40 man roster that I have more faith in than Brasier and Weber (before the last 2 days).

    I can see both sides of the debate, but I think they had more faith in the pen and having $4-6M to beef it up over the summer than going with Johnson, Velazquez and Weber as our 5th starter. You're right, it was no slam dunk. Once could argue the same about Pearce, but at least he's had 3-4 years of great success against lefties and had done pretty good against righties over the last couple years. With Moreland always getting hurt, I can see why we signed him, too. BTW, we had more choices than Kimbrel or Eovaldi (and Pearce.)

    I think we have a real good shot, but maybe not as faves, at this point.

    As bad as we've been playing, we are currently tied for the last wild card slot with Oakland. I guess, if you think our 29-27 record is what we will continue to be, then sure, we likely won't make it, but there's no way in hell I believe we will play .518 ball the rest of the way.

    They are playing well, now, but I like our chances much much more.

    The schedule is the only thing that may make it difficult, but I think we beat them by 5+ games and will probably pass TB, too. The hole we dug may be too deep to catch the Yanks for the division, but, if we are healthy, I like our chances come playoff time. I don't think the odds are as good as last year's odds, but we will be tough to beat.

    I couldn't disagree more. Teams go through phases. There's no way we end up with just 86 wins, unless the injury bug bites us hard.

    I'm with you, but the powers to be will never allow the Warriors to lose- (not like they would without the league's help).

    The chances were pretty good one of Thornburg or Smith would step up to fill Kimbrel's role, but sadly, no.

    I'm not advocating going overboard. I see what we paid for Adisson Reed and Eovaldi, and think that something like that is not too high a price to pay. Most contenders don't have 2 scrubs in the 6-7 slots, plus we don't have the greatest 1-5's either.

    Maybe. I don't see the Guardians as our equals, but I suppose they could be. TB is for real, but it's really about the final spot, and I only see 5 really good AL teams, and one is the Sox. The Guardians do have a much easier schedule, though.

    If it wasn't for all the HBPs, his OBP would be even worse.

    That doesn't happen as often as a player's first 3-4 ABs, and that's what PH'ers are for anyways. I do see a value in the L-R thing, but I thin it is less than many think it is.

    Barnes is our "closer," but Cora chooses to use him in earlier inning high leverage situations, if they arise. If Workman continues doing well, Cora can afford to use either one in early, key situations and save the other for rapping up a game. It would be nice to have a third guy to count on, so Hembree and Walden are not counted on for too much. IMO, we have 4 guys I trust, and most productive pens have 6 or 7. You know me, I hate to trade prospects from an already highly depleted farm, but I think our need for another solid pen arm is apparent and essential. I'd be on the phone 24/7, right now.

    I used to be a big supporter of putting your best all-around guy up 3rd. I trust the studies that show it is about the 5th most important slot, despite it seeming counter intuitive. To me, the whole alternate lefty-right things is overblown, and should only be used when two players are very close to even. I'm also highly skeptical of the "comfort slot" argument, especially over the long term. IMO, our best two hitters are Betts and JD. Devers and Bogey are both ahead of Beni and Moreland. In theory, Beni or Moreland should bat 3rd, since they are our 5th best hitter(s). If Pearce is hot, he's probably better than Beni and Moreland vs LHPs. I might go with this... vs RHPs 1. Betts 2. Devers 3. Moreland (or Beni) 4. Martinez 5. Bogey 6. Beni 7. Vaz 8. JBJ 9. Holt/Nunez vs LHPs 1. Betts 2. Bogey 3. Pearce (Beni) 4. Martinez 5. Devers 6. Beni 7. Vaz 8. JBJ 9. Holt

    It's hard to figure out. I assume the coaches are telling him to "go the other way," but he seems to get locked into the pull mentality until he's about to be benched, then he snaps out of it. He's my favorite active Sox player, but he drives me crazy sometimes. I'm hopeful he stays hot for a long time.
