When I saw that play, after the LF'er made an error that let a runner score, I thought, "Man, that's a lame reaction to have," but afterwards, it was explained that he was mad at himself for allowing the hitter to hit it hard. The players knew that, and that matters a hell of a lot more than my first impression.
Apparently, they players loved Lackey. Most fierce competitors are loved by most teammates, because the want to win so bad it shows (and rubs off).
When he left the Angels, they sung praises about him. He looked like he was liked in St. Louis afterwards, too.
