  1. I think, without any moves, Dalbec starts at 1B and Chavis at 2B. Just my opinion.
  2. Many of those players were great "clubhouse guys." (The list neglected including Dempster.) Contract costs: $13.25M x 2 Dempster (He retired after 1 year.) $13M x 3 Victorino (He declined sharply after 1 year.) $9.5M x 1 Stephen Drew (The following year re-signing was a circus.) $5M x 2 Jonny Gomes (Second year, he was traded.) $5M + incentives Mike Napoli (Re-signing didn't work out as well.) $3.1M x 2 David Ross Not counting Uehara, the total was $49M. (Uehara was an arb player in 2013- $4.25M.)
  3. The chances went up when Marco was non tendered, but I think we'll sign or trade for a utility infielder, and Dalbec will make the roster. Chavis will. If it's between Lin and Chatham, Lin is out of options.
  4. I know deals will be made. My list was meant to show where we are right now. (I doubt Chatham makes the 26 man roster until September.)
  5. I think JBJ's offense has been undervalued by Sox fans. The league average CF OPS has been .721 and .746 the last 2 years. JBJ is right around those numbers. 16 teams have a CF OPS of below .728 from 2018-2019. Of the 37 CF'er with 700 or more PAs since 2018, JBJ's .728 OPS ranks 24th. That's not great, but it's not as bad as many seem to think it has been. He also runs the bases very well along with his great D.
  6. Yes, and it's not like Price will be useless with LA, either. Sure, his salary is way too high, but he could bounce back, too or just give 100-150 quality IP each of the next 3 years. That has some value. Myers gives us OF depth and a warm body at 1B. He's not my idea of part of a rebuild, but he does have upside. The salary relief, especially on the lux budget, is what the trade would be all about.
  7. So too would trading Price & Betts.
  8. Exactly, and the AVV means nothing to SD, but the actual salary owed does. We could even chip in a couple mil per year, if needed.
  9. It's not the "only way." We could maybe trade price for Wil Myers straight up. We save some money and fill the 1B/OF opening we have. With the money saved (assuming we also dump JBJ) we can sign a more reliable SP'er.
  10. The reasons are obvious. From LA's POV: They could send some salary back to BOS to partially offset the Price cost (Joc Pederson and/or AJ Pollock plus a prospect). From BOS's POV: If including Betts helps us create a large budget space for 2020 and beyond, that clearly adds further value- maybe more than an iffy but talented prospect would bring back by trading Betts alone for Pederson and a prospect.
  11. Creating large budget spaces can be better than getting capable players back in trade. 2013 proved that. It doesn't mean it will always work out like that, but resetting in 2020 would be a big boost to any rebuild.
  12. They are desperate for a ring. I could see a Betts + Price deal with LA happening, or maybe Betts + Eovaldi. If we could trade Betts & Price to LA and JBJ + Eovaldi to Houston, we could start the rebuild very quickly and actually sign some decent players this winter while leaving room to make a run at Betts for 2021. (We could even deal JD to CWS.) I'm not saying I'm for this idea, but it could jump start the rebuild.
  13. If we reset the tax, this year, it won't be a 4th rounder. Sometimes, mid season desperation brings greater returns, but trading Betts in the winter allows the team to get a comp pick, if he bolts after 2020. That has real value, these days.
  14. Eovaldi Vazquez Workman Hembree Travis Lin Weber
  15. I agree. My list was based on what we have right now. We have 6 roster slots open, and maybe more to follow, so obviously quite a few players in red will be gone or in AAA to start 2020.
  16. By my count, we are down to 34 players on the 40 man roster: Assuming Pedey starts on the 60 day IL or maybe 15 day, players in Red might make the opening 26 man roster- assuming no acquisitions (which is impossible.) C: Vazquez 1B: Dalbec (3B), Travis (LF) 2B: Pedroia (DH), Chavis (1B/3B), Lin (SS/3B/OF) 3B: Devers SS: Bogaerts, Chatham (2B) LF: Benintendi CF: Bradley (traded?), Wilson RF: Betts DH: Martinez SP: Sale, Rodriguez, Price, Eovaldi, D Hernandez, Velazquez, Shawaryn, Hart, Weber, Reyes RP: Workman, Barnes, Walden, Taylor, Hembree, Brasier, Brewer, Lakins, Poyner, Aybar Most likely, Chatham, Wilson, Brewer and Velazquez will be replaced by acquired players. Travis, Brasier and Lin could be, too.
  17. I think trading Price (Eovaldi?) & JBJ and keeping JD & Betts is a real option. To answer the question here, I'd trade Betts, reset and then go hard after Betts next winter. I think JD opts out next winter, unless he gets hurt or declines in 2020. I might look to trade him at the deadline.
  18. Phillies claimed Trevor Kelley.
  19. We'd likely have to free up some salary to sign the better players, and with so many open roster spots, I think it will happen.
  20. The weird thing is, we kept a hold of him through all those injuries, and when he finally got healthy, we non tendered him.
  21. I think we are hoping nobody claims Marco and we send him to AAA as depth. We have too many Travis Shaw types already.
  22. I think we acquire someone or Chavis gets first look at 2B.
  23. I'm verklempt.
  24. It appears "thumb in ass" = building a ring team
