  1. I'd rather go "bargain" or just focus on getting the best pitching we can afford without losing top prospects.
  2. I think we need 3 minimum. We may sign 4-6 with an eye on not squeezing the Rule 5 additions. I think we'll go over the tax line by $10 to $19.9M in 2022.
  3. Possible 1Bmen Available: Too costly? .893 Freeman .866 J Walsh .859 B Bradley .845 G Cooper .800 Goldschmidt .795 Hoskins .781 Rizzo Maybe? .817 J Aguilar .802 Schoop .791 Mancini .776 C Santana Bargain? .826 CJ Chron .773 Moustakas .759 J Bell .758 N Lowe
  4. I see something like Ward, Potts and Chavis for Jon Gray and CJ Chron. I'm not sure Danny Duffy has recovered from his injury after a great start. There are other low-return package SP'ers and RP'ers out there, mostly salary dump types that make just enough to keep us under the taxline. 1Bmen are very low cost. There may be 5-6 on Bloom's radar. We could also go for a pen arm, but I doubt we give up much or end up over the tax line.
  5. I can't bring myself to feel confident in any game Richards starts, but the bats seem to be alive, again, so maybe we win a slugfest. Maybe we are surprised by a Richards gem. Hatch is a righty, so Dalbec will likely be sitting, Santana at 1B and Kike at 2B for the injured Arroyo. Let's start a streak.
  6. Agreed, but it is one major factor.
  7. I thought you disliked big spending. They are $52M over the tax line. They do lose a lot of payroll over the next two winters, so let's see if they keep spending large or cut back some. After 2021 Kershaw Pujols Jansen Seager Taylor Tsutsugo Knebel Nelso After 2022 Price Pollock option Turner option Muncy option A Barnes
  8. Will this be the 26 man roster by the end of August? SP- Sale, Eovaldi, ERod, Pivetta, Richards RP- Barnes, Ottavino, Whitlock, Taylor, DHern, Perez, Sawamura, Brasier C- Vaz, Plawecki 1B- Dalbec-Arroyo 2B- Kike-Arroyo 3B- Devers SS- Bogey LF- Verdugo CF- Duran RF- Renfroe DH JD Utility- Marwin, Cordero or Santana
  9. Nothing new... https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2021/07/boston-red-sox-draft-pick-signings-how-much-will-marcelo-mayer-jud-fabian-get-paid-tracking-every-bonus-before-aug-1-deadline.html
  10. We don't have much budget space, so we may just get one decent player, which to me should be a SP'er, or two lower cost players (P + P or P + 1B).
  11. If we do extend Devers and or Bogey, this winter, depending on how the contract is set up, we may take a luxury tax hit in 2022, which would restrict FA spending. I think we can work things out. We may only need 3 FAs, this winter: 1 to replace ERod 1 to replace Ottavino 1 to replace Richards or Workman/Rios/Andriese or possibly a short term 1B-utility guy.
  12. At no time during 2021, do I feel was or will be "the time to go big," unless we are talking December 2021.
  13. The problem with replacing JD's bat is that extending JD might not really "replace" this production. He is due to decline- any minute, now. I'd love to extend him, but at what cost? I'm not sure ERod is the best pitching option for 2022 and beyond, either. I love the guy, but there are still questions (as with any FA signing). Extending Bogey and Devers has to be a priority. Ottavino is a FA, so trading him, next winter is impossible. Richards has a big option, so I'm not sure any team wants him at that cost. The rest of 2021 may change that. Perez has a decent option, but I think we keep him as a long man. We lose Richards and ERod, and add a FA, Sale & Whitlock to the rotation. (I think we keep Houck as the long man- spot starter.)
  14. 1Bmen are a dime a dozen, and all we need is a 2 month rental. Kike is too good of a defensive player to stick at 1B, long term. I'm okay with playing him there, so Duran can play, but it should not be the plan.
  15. Sox OPS Against Leaderboard .518 Barnes .562 Ottavino .599 Whitlock .679 Taylor .685 Eovaldi .692 Rios .705 Houck .719 DHern .740 Workman .743 Pivetta .757 Sawamura .771 ERod .794 Perez .853 Richards .942 Andriese
  16. SOX OPS Leaders .941 JD .920 Bogey .916 Devers .792 Arroyo (IL) .773 Renfroe .765 Kike .753 Verdugo .677 Plawecki .659 Dalbec .652 Vaz .647 Duran (13 PAs) .583 Marwin (IL) .575 Santana .530 Chavis (64 PAs) .501 Cordero (seems so long ago)
  17. We should have just asked for Verdugo & Maeda.
  18. Flip a 3 sided coin: Workman, Andriese, Rios.
  19. George Scott at 1B for his best years, but Cooper may be the right choice. They also traded Youk, but when he was just a shellof himself. Shoppach is the only catcher of substance traded away, as far as I know.
  20. Before his last two outings yes. 8 IP 7 H 5 BB 5 K 0 ER .614 OPS Against 7 IR- 1 IR Scored Last two? YUCKadocious! 1 IP 1 H 5 BB (including 2 with the bases loaded) 0 K 1 ER .917 OPS Against 4 IR- 4 IR Scored
  21. I'd like to see us trade for a salary dump pitcher, so the return package does not have to be much. Just keep the budget below the tax line. When Sale returns, Perez and Richards replace 2 from Workman, Rios and Andriese. I doubt we add a 1Bman, but if we do it will be a very low profile deal.
  22. His history shows he really has sucked, except for two seasons. .824 his rookie year in 430 PAs (only 7 HRs but 44 XBHs) .575 from 2015-2018 in 735 PAs (just 6 HRs) .857 in 2019 in 511 PAs (28 HRs and 57 XBHs) .552 from 2020-2021 in 172 PAs (5 HRs and 12 XBHs)
  23. I’m still not convinced, but a glimmer of hope has appeared. I’d still like to see Cordero again.
