  1. I thought of that, too. We could trade Renfroe while his value was high or trade JD and use Renfroe as a DH and 4th OF'er. Dalbec-Casas at 1B could offer a very productive and very low cost solution.
  2. I didn't say I liked the moves or that they worked. I just tried to explain their possible thinking. I think they felt we needed offense and pitching and decided to go for pitching the following year. At the time, I think many people would say Scherzer and Price were pretty similar, so maybe that part of their thinking was not all that flawed. Certainly signing Pablo was seriously flawed. In hindsight, we could have signed Scherzer and Cruz, and Ben might still be our GM.
  3. Perhaps something like this might work: Sign Semien or Baez Sign Schwarber Sign Iggy Sign ERod or the like Trade Bogey and Dalbec for a young, cost-controlled pitcher like Montas and a solid RP'er. (A third team would have to get involved, if we are to get a pitcher from a low spending team like the A's. Bogey costs too much. 2022 Eovaldi, ERod, Montas, Sale, Pivetta, Seabold Houck, Whitlock, RP'er by trade, Barnes, Taylor, Brasier DHern, Sawamura 1. Kike CF 2. Schwarber 1B 3. Semien SS 4. Devers 3B 5. JD DH 6. Verdugo LF 7. Renfroe RF 8. Iggy 2B 9. Vaz C Bench: Arroyo, Casas, Plawecki or RHern, Duran
  4. Agreed. I do think Price and Scherzer had very similar backgrounds at the time of their signings, and we did get Price.
  5. Signing Semien/Baez and Schwarber would pretty much force a trade of Bogey, or we'd have no money for pitching. No ERod, Ottavino, Richards, Perez and Andriese.
  6. True, but getting him to sign is most important.
  7. I always wondered why so many pitchers wait. I thought you might be the one with an answer.
  8. At the time, we needed offense and defense, and I think the thought was that more top pitchers were available the next winter (like Price), so they ordered their winters with offense going first.
  9. They could do more, if the money is back-end loaded, so trading him would be almost a sure thing before the last 1-2 years.
  10. BTV has some mighty big values assigned to many players not named Casas or Mayer. Acuna, Tatis & Soto are off the charts (over 267). Corbin, Wander, Burnes, Buehler & Ohtani are between 158 and 190. Bichette, L Robert & O Albies are between 119-128 44 players are between 58 and 118 Devers is at 57.2 Not bad being ranked 54th with just 2 years of team control. Wander has 6 years. Casas is 58th at 54.4 Mayer is 86th at 42.8 Houck is 85th at 42.7 Verdugo is 88th at 41.0 Montas is 92nd Other Sox Players 32 Bogey 23 Duran 22 Yorke 14 Eovaldi 13 Dalbec 12 Downs 11 Taylor 11 Jimenez 11 Kike 6 Mata (big gap) 5 Pivetta, Bello, Renfroe, Whitlock 4 Jordan, Groome, Gonzalez, Seabold 3 Wickowski, McDonough, Rosario, RHern, Arroyo, Bonaci, Lugo, Ward
  11. Careful, the grammar police have been out in force, lately.
  12. I might be oversimplifying things, but it may very well come down to Bloom needing to choose between trying to keep ERod or trying to keep Schwarber. If we bring back both, there might be almost no money left to fill 3 open pitching slots and the utility infielder position.
  13. I've made a few comments about Perez. One was about not needing him as the 13th roster slot on a playoff roster with so many days off. We have plenty of other shaky pitchers we can give mop up inning to. One was about Bloom's spending $10M on Richards and $6M on Perez, and about him needing to make better choices with signing FA pitchers, next year. (Andriese and Sawamura were not any better.)
  14. They don't always wait to the last year to make a deal.
  15. And, they'll be paying Boone to sit home after next year, when they spend a boatload of money and miss out again.
  16. He's dumber than Boone.
  17. I think a lot of this stuff is overblown by the media- surprise, surprise, but players may use some comments to raise the energy level. I get the point about if a player needs this kind of motivation in the playoffs, they are probably doomed.
  18. It sure looks that way, now. However, it may come down to Schwarber vs ERod, and both look highly needed, right now.
  19. I guess the question is, or was, were Lester and Price on a HOF path? (I'd say pretty damn close or yes.)
  20. Their contract costs will reflect these differing uncertainty factors.
  21. I'd pay Devers a few extra years to get him for all his prime years. Bogey is peak prime, now. If we rework his deal, it would be for mostly post-prime years. To me, Devers is a higher priority. My issue with Bogey is also about defense, and SS being a vital defensive position, AND this year being a year with so many very good FA SSs on the market. My guess is one or two can be had at a reasonable cost, after the big spenders gobble up the 2-3 they want. Semien or Baez would be nice. They can play 2B until 2022, or we could trade Bogey to a team that lost their great SS to free agency- like HOU.
  22. Who knows? It's kind of been widely accepted, not that means it true, you don't give the other team things that can get them upset. BTW, what is Correa going to say? "I went home and cried." Or, "I'm so pissed, I'm gonna rake, tomorrow!"
  23. Signing Devers to a 9 year deal brings him to age 33. If he opts out, it's because he's worth more than we owe him.
  24. I've never bought into the everyday player vs a pitcher argument. Top SP'er often face over 750 batters a year, sometimes over 800. That's worth more than 650, even if they are all bunched up into 32 games. Because casas looks to be everything you said he might be, his trade value is high enough to bring back some excellent value. I'm not saying I want to trade him, and I'm not for handing him away for a 2 year ab pitcher, but with Dalbec looking pretty good, he might be our best hope for getting top quality pitching at a low financial cost. Getting a low cost pitcher gives Bloom a ton of flexibility with the budget to add more top quality pitching and even explore going for Semien/Baez or bringing back Schwarber (or even both!)
