WAR does not penalize or glorify flashy D, but it does reward good to great defenders and penalize poor defenders. (It can actually partially negate a negative WAR, who has a horrific offensive WAR component player. LOL!) The fact is, Bogey's WAR would be a lot better, if his defense was top notch. Iggy's WAR would be a lot lower, if he was a bad defender. Alex Gonzo's offense was actually pretty good- for a SS in those days, but not when he was on the Sox. His offense sucked.

Although Wacha and Hill have been used in the pen and could be for the Sox, I think they might have the inside track on winning rotation slots, leaving Houck and Whitlock as cornerstones to the 2022 Sox pen. 1. Eovaldi 2. Sale 3. Pivetta 4. Wacha 5. Hill (Paxtom maybe replaces the worst of the five, if and when he joins the team.) I think the plan is to fill in a slot or two in the pen: 1. Houck 2. Whitlock 3. ______ 4. Barnes 5. Brasier 6. Taylor 7. Davis (no options) 8. Sawamura/DHern/Valdez/Bazardo (Seabold/Winckowski)

Fossom helped us get Schilling, so his name matters. Alex G hit 23 HRs with 88 RBI the year after he left Boston. In the 3 seasons after leaving Boston, he had a combined .700 OPS with a 650 PA line of... .247 21 78 (38 2B+3B)- this from a guy known for great or plus D. Yes, his name is "big" enough. From 2003-2009, his 650 line was .252 17 73 (38 2B+3B)

Expanding to 28 would be a major get by the players, and would likely lessen demands in other areas. It would be a huge job security boost and pay increase for the 2 players added (from minor league play to major league pay.) I think 26-27 is enough, and I don't want to add to the chances more RP'ers are called in per game. It's the most boring part of the game, to me. I think adding a roster spot for double headers only would be enough.

You should know counting on all your RPers to not have bad years is very wishful thinking. Most teams use over 14 every year. If you guys are in the race, you will likely trade for a RPer at the deadline… Or not (and lose again.)
