  1. Without Houck, we have to find at least a third high leverage guy. We might already be burning Whitlock out, and Schreiber going multiple innings here and there may also be pushing him to the limit. Barnes looks like the best bet out of all the others. Sad, but true. We could try calling German up, but I trust there is a reason we have not, already.
  2. It's easy to say we need to get an established closer and really want it to happen, but we all know how hard and costly it is, and even if you do, it's still a roll of the dice, to some extent. There are no MO's anymore. That, in itself, is a big worry, but when you add to the fact that spending big on a closer means going lighter at another position or two of need, and it gets even scarier. It might mean settling on a DH like Brantley over a solid OF'er with OBP skills like Nimmo. It might mean settling on Arroyo at 2B and moving Story to SS, so we can afford a closer like Diaz. I think we try to trade for a solid set-up man or two, in hopes we can convert one to a closer. If it works, Bloom is a genius. If it doesn't work, we'll be hearing the same bashing of the pen plan, again. I just don't see us signing a closer. We might not even be willing to win a bidding war for Fulmer or other next tier RP'ers.
  3. I look at the other teams not named Alabama, Ohio St, Georgia and Clemson, and they all have similarities to ND. Every year, one of these top 4 teams lose 2 games, due mostly to their schedule and conference playoff games, especially the SEC, where GA v AL will likely mean one gets its 2nd loss. It's a free-for-all after the top 4 and ND has as good a chance as any, except they already have 1 loss. I'm actually encouraged at how well they played at OSU. They looked better than I expected.
  4. I know what the loss column means, and I mentioned how the loss column is more important. Your destiny becomes tied to another team's fate, which is not good, but CLE has 3 more games to play than us. I seriously doubt they win all 3. They can, or course, but the odds are, they won't.
  5. With Houck getting back surgery, Whitlock is probably the most crucial carry-over pitcher we have. How we choose to use him next year might be Bloom's biggest winter decision he makes, and that's saying a lot, because he has to fill at least 5 high-need slots in the 26 man roster. (He needs to do well on at least 3 or 4 of those 5 or 6 fill-in additions.)
  6. I would not pay for what Diaz and Jansen will be paid. I'm not aware of any on the trade market. It would mean we'd have to go light in CF, middle IF, SP and RF/1B/DH. I also don't think that is how Sox management views the closer role, either. I think we continue to try and find a closer, via trade, who might not even be one, now. We won't find another Uehara, but that is how we will try to find one, IMO- like it or not. Hopefully, we will do more than Diekman-Strahm type signings- like 3 a little better or 2 a lot better. I'm thinking that is the best we can hope for, and maybe, this time, Bloom will strike gold. Personally, I'd love to add a solid, "established" closer, but on a fixed budget, I can't see how we can fill all the other holes enough to keep us competitive. We'd just end up bitching about 1B, again, or CF, or 2B/SS or RF or DH or..., instead.
  7. He was probably on some sort of seasonal innings or pitch count, and that might have been why they yanked him back from starting. The idea seemed to be that next year would be the 170+ IP season, but now I'm not so sure.
  8. The loss column is more important, but hell yes you can make that up. True, you have to rely on CLE losing, but they are not a great team. I'm not predicting we pass them, but getting to #7 would be rewarding, in my mind, after the cluster this season was.
  9. They have a good D, and I think OSU was part of the reason we looked so bad. We have a pretty easy schedule, except for Clemson (at ND) and at USC. Maybe at BYU might be tough. It's not too hard to imagine a 1 loss team, but probably 2 is more likely and no #4 ranking. We weren't ranked 5th for no reason.
  10. The Sox farm went 3-1, again tonight. (14-2 the last 4 nights) Woo 9-0 win: 3 hitter by 4 pitchers (Shugart 4, Feltman 2, DHern 1, Politi 2) Castellanos 3-5 (.816 now), Fitzy 2-4 w 3 rbi (.740) and EValdez 1-3 w 2 BB & HR. POR won 6-3: Wilyer Abreu drew his 100th BB and homered while going 2-3, Hamilton hit his 11th HR, Kavadas went 2-4 (.829 in AA) and Binelas also went 2-4 w a 2B (.583 in AA). GRE won 8-0: 6 hitter. Yorke 3-5, Mayer 2-5 w 2B & 3B, Lugo 2-5, Hickey 2-5 w 9th HR. SAL lost 6-3: Paulino 2-3 w 2B & BB, Bonaci 1-3 w BB
  11. Some Sox are rising in the OPS rankins: .889 Devers .879 Refsnyder (134 PAs) .846 Bogey .782 JaDavis (27) .770 JD .759 Vaz .746 Arroyo .732 Story .731 Wong (13) .731 Dugo .715 Hosmer (.727 SDP/.611 BOS) .714 Cordero .713 Pham (.694 CIN/.789 BOS) .648 Duran .646 Kike .644 Dalbec .620 McGuire (was .546 w CWS/.849 since trade) .578 JBJ .566 Plawecki .427 Downs (41) .322 Sanchez (44) .000 Shaw (19)
  12. 3.5 games behind the #7 slot in the AL, which is top half. (5 in the loss column to CLE.)
  13. Ohio State deserved to win, but the Irish looked pretty good. Maybe they will end up in the top 4. They'll have to beat Clemson and USC.
  14. At least it was a solid hit.
  15. This just goes to show you how a team's fate can turn on a dime, and for no apparent reason, at times. The Yanks looked like the 2018 Sox for a half season, and now this...
  16. What a total bummer. This season has been a total snakebite!
  17. Long awaited. I hope this kid is all we hope he can be!
  18. Yes. The deadline deals made us better in 2022 and beyond... something not to easy to do. + McGuire + Pham + Hosmer + multiple prospects, including Valdez, Abreu and Freguson + dumping Diekman ? Hosmer (free) - Vaz - Groome I also think the net results of all his winter moves does not come to a negative: Negative: JBJ trade Diekman signing (turned into a plus by dumping his contract and acquiring McGuire for multiple years) OK: Hill ??? Story Good: Strahm Great: Wacha Schreiber Refsnyder
  19. You forgot waiver wire: Schreiber. On FA signings, he did very well on Wacha at $7M and Strahm for just $3M. Hill at $5M was not horrible. Diekman's signing sucked, but we got the CWS to take his contract and give us a catcher we might use as our starter. Last year, he swung and missed on Richards and Perez, but it looks like he was just a year off on Martin. The Ottavino trade brought us German, too. Not a bad deal, even if German doesn't do great. He has yet to go large and long on a pitcher, or trade anything of value for a solid one. That may (should) change, this winter.
  20. It takes a while to build up the farm, then a few more years for them to mature into MLB players who prove the system worked. The farm looks better, now, but only time will tell.
  21. I'm glad the brought him up, this year, even if it was a bit rushed.
  22. I'd be happy with Devers Bogey Wacha Kike Nimmo RP'er Top OBP FAs on this Winter's Market (2019-2022) 10. Nimmo .379 13. Bogey .377 16. Y Grandal .372 22. Brantley .368 33. Rizzo .362 40. Belt .357 41. Abreu .355 42. Correa .355 45. Bell .354 48. Cruz .353 49. Muncy .353 55. JD .351 64. C Santana .349 73. T Anderson .347 77. K Wong .345
  23. Abreu and Valdez are finally showing what they can do.
  24. Georgia really showed just how much the PAC-10 sucks.
