  1. That was the era whereby richer teams gamed the system to add comp picks. The Rays mastered it as low spending team, often trading for players who would have comp picks attached just for the picks. In 2011, they had 9 picks in the first round (top 60 picks) and 2 in the 2nd for 10 in the top 89 picks!- one was Blake Snell, but nobody else did great. In 2013, they got Stanek for losing BJ Upton. They really did not use all those draft picks very well.
  2. Yes, I looked just for that reason: $63.8M value over 5 years - $31M salary $32.8 Value
  3. I remember we got Vitek and Ranaudo with his comp picks.
  4. It's turned into how many votes it takes to show who is better than first or second ballot entries.
  5. Personally, I think there are too many- not too few.
  6. Now, ... 32.8 Springs 0.0 Mazza 0.7 R Hernandez
  7. So are Combs and Pennock. I think that was the point.
  8. No matter what you do, someone will complain. Add 500 more players to the HOF, and people will complain about #501 and 502.
  9. You can choose your own way to evaluate a GM give the task and circumstances he was given. Make way for Yoshida, Jansen, Martin, Kluber, Turner, McGuire and the extended Devers.
  10. RHern had a pretty high BTV value: 13.8 RHern 0.1 Sogard for 0.2 Mazza 0.0 Springs
  11. The O's finally made a move that looks to improve on a team that looked poised to take a step up in 2023. I'm no expert on O's winter moves, but it seems they still lost more talent since the deadline than gained.
  12. I'm now surprised the A's would not take DHern, Barnes and $9M for Irvin.
  13. He rested these guys way too much in ST'ings... no wait...
  14. My lists were not meant to be viewed as order from best to worst, but I do think the Whitlock moves was a very good one, and maybe Bloom's best. I'm not sure we make the playoffs in '21 without him. 2021-2022 Red Sox (100+ IP): 152 IP in 2 seasons - 3rd on team 2.73 ERA (163 ERA+)- 1st 3.07 FIP- 2nd 1.06 WHIP- 1st 5.1 K/BB- 1st 3.0 fWAR- T3 bWAR 6.0 Nate 5.2 Pivetta 4.7 Whitlock 3.3 Wacha 3.2 Houck
  15. Maybe my best and worst 12... Best Whitlock Rule 5 Schreiber MLFA Wacha signing Pivetta trade Kike signing Hill signing Renfroe signing Deadline trades: Schwarber, Iggy, Shaw, Robles, McGuire trade Strahm signing Refsnyder & Kelly MLFA Arroyo Waivers Ottavini & German trade Worst Renfroe for JBJ Bogey slap in face offer Paxton signing Barnes extension Diekman signing Richards signing Marwin signing Perez signings (I & II) Andriese signing Not getting under the tax line in '22 Not having at least a mini fire sale in summer '22 Spending most of the '23 budget on DH/LF/1B Hard to Grade/Blame but many will see as bad Betts for Dugo, Wong & Downs The Bogey walk Beni for Cordero, Wink and 3 others I probably forgot some doozies.
  16. It's one thing to trade Betts, when we all knew he was great. it's another to trade a guy just about everyone thought should be DFA'd. Criticizing that trade is all hindsight. It's not to say a mistake was not made, but this one was understandable, to a greater extent than the Renfroe, beni and other trades.
  17. Many feel Abreu was the better of the two in the Vaz return, but this kid can hit!
  18. I'd put it closer to 50 IP more for Kluber.
  19. This one is certainly a hindsight blast.
  20. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/01/red-sox-remain-open-to-middle-infield-acquisitions.html
  21. It's been talked about quite a bit. Remember, Bloom traded for him as well as traded him away.
  22. I kinda like our depth. I see Bello as a sure top 5 SP'er. Paxton is #6 in my book. I see Crawford and Wink as acceptable depth that may or may not improve. We should know, if they look like better opti9ons than Mata, Walter and Murphy by the time the first one is needed. I've thought all along, we should not count on Sale & Paxton for anything, and certainly more than 30 starts combined, but it looks like we are. That being said, I do still have hopes in Sale. I think he has a strong drive to want to return and to want to do great. I know that does not mean much, but it would not shock me, if he pitches 150+ nice innings, this year. To me, Paxton is a complete wild card.
  23. Sale has more MLB IP'd than Kluber, despite the age difference. 1678 in 12 yrs- Sale 1587 in 12 yrs- Kluber Overall, at all levels, yes, Kluber has significantly more. 2385 Kluber in 16 seasons 1724 Sale in 12 seasons Recency factor (last 5 seasons): 496 Kluber 354 Sale
  24. That's how I see it. The thing with Mondesi is that he's had about 12 different injuries. I guess Sale is trying to catch up. The "good thing" about Sale is that his arm and elbow should be fine and well rested.
  25. Case 1: We keep barnes and pay him $9M. Case 2: Another team pays him $725K and we pay $8.25M and the player who takes his place on the 26/40 man roster, at least $725K. ($8.25 +.75=$9.0) Case 3: Nobody takes Barnes and we pay him $9M and the guy who takes his place at least $725K. $9.0M + $725K= $9.75M. YES
