  1. I'm really not for buying an ace. I was just talking about financial priorities. You never know you are getting an ace. If Price was not an ace, after we got him, then I'm not sure what resume can ever look much better prior to acquisition. Trading for younger pitchers that have shown "ace material," whatever that means, seems like the best way to get an ace, but again, is trading Mayer worth it? I'm not sure. I was playing around on BTV and came up with these accepted deals, and again, I'm not "for them." I was just looking what we might be a ble to get for Mayer: Mayer for McK. Gore, Abrams & Vaquero Mayer for Giolito, TAnderson (SS) & Kopech Mayer, Rafaela, Walter for Cease & T Anderson Mayer, Rafaela & Kike for Nootbaar, Gallegos, DeJong & $6M Mayer, Kike & $4M for Brady Singer, Barlow and Drew Waters No Mayer? Romero & Walter for CJ Abrams, M Gore and salary dump P Corbin
  2. Yes. I never disagreed with that or even hinted otherwise. Let's move on.
  3. This winter's Rule 5 players: Luis Perales Eddison Paulino Ryan Fernandez ? Wikelman Gonzalez ? Doubtfuls, as of now Matthew Lugo Stephen Scott Bryan Gonzalez Nick Sogard Brainer Bonaci Angel Bastardo (Mayer is not eligible until 2025, but he may be added during the 2024 season.) Winter 2024 names include Hickey, Yorke, Kavadas, Jordan, Guerrero
  4. I doubt Kike would cost $10M to keep around beyond 2023, but I agree. He should not come back. There will be other arb raises and Turner has a player option ($13.4M with $6.7M buyout.) My guess is we pay Bleier $250K and refuse his $3.75M option. cots has us at $81M under, next year with no... 10 Kike 10 Kluber (we say no to option with no buyout) 7 Duvall 4 Paxton The arbs are not counted 3 of 3 Dugo, Pivetta, Arroyo, Refsnyder 2 of 3 McGuire, Chang 1 of 3 Schreiber, Dalbec We should have plenty to spend on the rotation, especially if we backfill the loss of Duvall & Kike from within the system. Here is the non pitcher roster for 2024 with no additions: C: Wong & McGuire 1B: Casas & Dalbec ? 2B: Valdez & Reyes/Arroyo ? (Hamilton/Yorke) SS: Story & Chang ? (Mayer) 3B: Devers LF: Yoshida & Refsynder CF: Duran (Rafaela) RF: Verdugo (Abreu) DH: Turner (option) or Valdez/Ref
  5. We play 25 of those 38 games vs the ALE after the trade deadline, and one would hope also after we have Story and Duvall back (maybe even Mondesi.) We also have 7 games vs HOU and 3 w TEX after the deadline (AUG 1.)
  6. We keep saying we need an ace, need an ace, need an ace, then suggest going for more O. I doubt we can afford Soto and then get an ace or vice versa.
  7. These days off after a tough streak really gets the conversations going in every different direction- even south!
  8. MLB.com reports... Masataka Yoshida living up to agent's billing WWW.MLB.COM This story was excerpted from Ian Browne’s Red Sox Beat newsletter. To read the full newsletter, click here. And subscribe to get it regularly in your inbox. "...given the many skeptical teams there were on the market that didn’t agree with the agent’s valuation of the left fielder from Japan. “There were about three other teams besides the Red Sox that did [agree],” Boras said. “But we felt Fenway was an ideal place for him and it worked out great.”
  9. MLB selects this Sox pitcher as our "hottest pitching prospect" ... Red Sox: Dalton Rogers, LHP (No. 24) A surprise third-round pick out of Southern Mississippi last July, Rogers stands out with the low release height and flat plane on a 91-96 mph fastball that hitters can't seem to barrel. He has given up just three runs while striking out 28 in his last 17 innings, and he has an overall 2.49 ERA, .139 opponent average and 38 strikeouts in 21 2/3 frames in Single-A.
  10. Many of our players have taken a hit on their OPS the last week or two, but we still have 10 guys at .700 or above and all our major players, except Kike over .666. I think posters would have been shocked, back in March, had they been told our top OPS guys were... 1. Duvall 2. Yoshida 3. Duran 4. Dugo 6. Valdez 7. Refsnyder 9. Wong 10. Reyes 11. Tapia (Devers is 5th and Turner is 8th. McGuire, Casas, Arroyo and Kike are all below 11th.) Maybe equally surprising would be to see our ERA leaders among all 16 pitchers with 12+ IP: 1. Martin 2. Schreiber 3. Winckowski 4. Crawford 5. Bernardino 7. Bello 9. Sale 10. Paxton (Jansen is 6th and Houck 8th.)
  11. The things I responded to were serious, except maybe the part where he asked me to stop posting forever. I put Red on ignore and have avoided any response to him for maybe close to 2 weeks, despite MVP egging us on. Maybe, I should just ignore him, too, but that's half the posts on this site, and he does provide a lot of great stuff. I said I'll honestly try harder to ignore the trolling and misrepresentations, like calling a question a statement. That will have to do from my end. I'll take some of the blame for how things get more prickly around here when our team is losing. I apologize for that. I will sincerely try harder - not just with Red.
  12. You are right. I need to ignore trolling. I'll try harder.
  13. This Duran is an imposter. I'm convinced.
  14. Obviously, you don't know what "troll" means, but that's not surprising.
  15. No "setbacks" but "good days and bad days." An enigma wrapped in a mystery. I guess we should not count on anything from him.
  16. Keep trolling. I haven't responded to Red in over a week. You're schtick is stale.
  17. He seems to be getting it, and Kike is doing nothing to take it from him. The big decision will have to be made when Duvall returns, but Duvall can play LF (Yoshida DH/Turner 1B/ Casas > ???) Casas need a true chance, too. Good problems to have. A real sign of a bad team.
  18. If Duran keeps slumping, and Kike comes around, Kke may end up playing a lot of CF, once Story and the ever elusive Mondesi join the club. We seem to have a lot of options, once everyone is healthy, if that really ever happens. SS: R Story S Mondesi R Kike R Chang 2B R Story L Valdez R Kike R Arroyo R Reyes LF L Yoshida R Duvall R Refsnyder/Tapia CF L Duran R Duvall R Kike 1B L Casas R Turner R Dalbec DH R Turner L Yoshida (Others)
  19. There is such a wide range on where this team may end up in the win column. Under 81 is still in play, for sure. 86-87 seems like a good bet (5-6 over as you suggest.) I'm still thinking 88-90 is very doable, absent massive injuries, and I even think with good luck on injuries, maybe 91-93 is possible.
  20. I don't disagree. Plus, much of the young talent helping now, are DD's kids, which is understandable, when you factor in that Bloom has had 4 winters and 3 drafts, one of which was the shortened 20 draft, and he's taken mostly HS kids with his top picks. Whitlock and Mayer are his two major young "gets-" maybe Drohan, Bleis and/or Yorke joins the group
  21. Can you try to pay attention. There was a question mark, so it was not a STATEMENT! I was asking to try and find out why. I was not implying it was why. My only "statement" was: "I'm sure the Sox have tried to get him to take more pitches. It is not happening, though." Was that "WRONG?" It's not negating the fact that they still want him to "swing hard." I never addressed that point.
  22. You'd love that. Nobody would ever fact check you. If you could just keep up with what was actually said, your posts would improve.
  23. No argument on that chosen time frame, but if you look at 2021-2022 combined, he was one of the league's best 5th starters. Both points are not mutually exclusive. Every player has ups and downs within a longer time frame. I could pull this on your chosen time frame: NO! He hasn't sucked since 7/1/22, because from 7/25/22 to 9/7/22 (9 starts) he had an ERA of 3.80 and a FIP of 4.23. He was also 4.65 his last 14 starts of 2022- very close to the hypothetical 4.55 ERA spoken of earlier in this discussion.
