  1. I'm fine with the long term plan. I just wish they'd have been upfront about it. I also wish they'd have not tried the halfway approach. I call it "half ass." Had they just spent 2-3 years in complete rebuild mode, we'd be way better off, right now. Half-ass extends the rebuild.
  2. Trading Bello for Cease would not work for us. If the CWS are demanding pitching in return, I'm not sure we can meet their needs. Crawford and Romero would likely be turned down. Crawford & Yorke?
  3. The thing is, he could be 100% telling the truth and really believe he will make significant upgrades, but if he keeps going to JH with some big deals to be offered, and JH keeps saying no, he could be wrong. It may not be a lie, but it could be part of a further sham, with him being the set-up stooge.
  4. On the pitching: really good pitching is very expensive. The 2020 and 2021 team had so many holes that spending large and long on a very good SP'er would have meant neglecting other high need slots. I get the argument about not adding many promising pitching prospects, but I sympathize with the choice to draft the best chance players, who are usually non pitchers. Bloom did add some pitching: Whitlock, Pivetta, Winckowski, Schreiber, Bernardino, Campbell, Kelly, Robertson along with some decent rentals like Wacha, Hill and Strahm. Not adding an ace-type pitcher left a gaping hole, and I would have preferred he added one, instead of Story and/or Yoshida. The restricted winter spending budgets were a big part of our lack of success, but that does not take Bloom off the hook. He hoarded his top prospects, too much, IMO, but if they turn out being special, maybe someday we'll be thankful he held on to them.
  5. I see it that way, too. The additions Bloom made to 2021 were not as good as the ones before '22 and '23, yet we did much better. Bloom failed to build the 26 man roster into a winning team. I think he did okay to good on building up 40 man roster depth. I think he did very good on building up the farm, but we won't know that for a while more. Even with some budget issues, he did poorly on too many additions, especially the bigger ones.
  6. Breslow promises to be "aggressive" in his search for Rotation upgrades. Can we believe him? https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/red-sox-trade-rumors-aggressive-rotation-free-agency.html
  7. I think DD would have done a better job, too. My point was about how the budget and forced trade of Betts, which was almost done during DD's tenure, would have made winning in 2020 and beyond very difficult for any GM, including DD. What is DD's success rate on low budget teams?
  8. I didn't make the statement. It's not about what I want. it's about using language to express your ideas and opinions. The statement you made did not seem to match what I think you wanted to say, but I will not ask for clarification. That never turns out well.
  9. If we add Yamo, Burnes or maybe Snell or Monty, I'd be okay with Stroman as the second best SP addition, but he's not high on my lsit.
  10. Had he gone total fire sale in '22, a major group of Sox fans would have gone ape s***. Had he gone total buy mode in '22, I doubt we'd have gone very far, but yes, playing it halfway with piddly-ass moves please nobody. I was of the opinion we should have been buyer in '23, but I'm not sure even 2-3 major moves that all worked would have been enough. In hindsight, I think we should have sold in '22 and '23.
  11. Agreed. To me, Youk was the worst. (But, I'm glad we had him.) I liked Nixon, but he walked the line, IMO.
  12. Yes, in 2020 (sell), 2021 (buy) and '22 (buy & sell)- just not 2023. He was "Mr. Dithers" in 2023, yes.
  13. There are ways to get good players without adding salary. There are ways to shed some salary (like the reported lost chance to trade Sale,) and then adding equal or less salary through further trades. Bloom did leave some money on the table in '23, at the deadline. He could have added someone without going over the tax line, but I do think staying under the line was a pretty firm priority in '20, '21 and '23. Do you think he chose to not spend what he could have spent, very often?
  14. True. He was able to dump Diekman's salary at the deadline, but it wasn't nearly enough. It's obvious he was not in "sell mode." He did some selling, like Vaz & Diekman, but he also bought with Pham, Hosmer and to some extent McGuire.
  15. I agree, but I would not call making 4-5 moves "dithering." I'd call it a failure to pick a lane or address the major needs of the team. Vaz for Abreu & EValdez Diekman for McGuire & Broadway Northcut for Pham Groome for Hosmer, M Ferguson & C Rosier Cash for Almonte
  16. I do, too, but I like the calm and collected types, as well. I'm not big on those who smash things after a K or a bad ump call, but it's not a disqualifying actor for me.
  17. I agree. I have said we will NOT sign 3 SP'ers, but that does not change how I feel about the need for 3. Assuming we add two and Bello is the 2 or 3. That leaves 2 slots for tweeners or injury prone starters: Sale Pivetta Houck Crawford Whitlock We are asking for the same trouble we've seen for 4 years. Even if the top 3 pitchers give us 31+ starts, which is unlikely, we'll still be relying on too many question marks to expect success. Any one or two of those 5 on my list could do the job well enough for us to have a good season, but the problem is we don't know which two, until we cycle through a few of them to settle on the right two. We might get lucky, and the first two chosen do well, all year, but that is doubtful, at best. Look at Pivetta. He started 2023 in the rotation and really sucked. Later, after cycling through several more options, we went back to him, and it worked. It's a crapshoot.
  18. I like Lugo as our 3rd SP addition. He'd be fine as the second, if we sign Yamo. I might be okay with Monty & Lugo or Snell and Lugo. Stroman, Erod and Lugo?
  19. If that's what this is about, I'd say it's harmless.
  20. He made some key moves at the '21 deadline. He made several moves at the '22 deadline (buying and selling.) Nothing major, though, except Vaz. He dithered at the '23 deadline.
  21. I find it hard to believe he chose to not spend what he was allowed to spend, but I guess it's possible. He did choose a lot of bad moves- signings and trades, but when you stack up the good, the meh and the bad, I don't think it would look as bad as many seem to think it was. Of course, many are subjective, and when spending $1-5M on the vast majority of additions, and expectation ffactor should also be applied. I expected him to do better with the "BB" moves, but he did hit on a few. He really sucked on his $10M deals (Richards, Kike II and Kluber,) and his biggest signings (Story & Yoshida) are off to poor starts.
  22. name a couple incidents.
  23. Scherzer is more nutty.
