  1. An interesting but irrelevant stat: Sox are ranked 8th in MLB in average home attendance but 4th in road attendance.
  2. Second time around for the Sox and Fulmer, who gave up 3 in 7.2 in July. I think our lineup tonight is better than 27 July's.
  3. 255 lbs, 5'10" + doubling his salary = a whole lot of risk. Two rotten years so far only confirm the risk. So does the departure of Cherington.
  4. Sox 7-3 in last 10, Detroit 3-7, but the Tigers swept the Sox at Fenway last time around (late July). Shaw not in the lineup: Pedroia, Bogaerts, Ortiz, Betts, HanRam, JBJ, Leon, Holt, Benintendi. How will the bullpen cope tonight without Tazawa and maybe Ziegler?
  5. Where the sam hill is the thread for tonight's game (August 19)?
  6. Maybe I'm nuts, but it seem to me you don't risk much by losing the DH because thereafter you can either let the pitcher hit or pinch-hit. This is what all MLB managers do in every game (almost every game) played in a NL park. To me using Leon yesterday as the DH carried very little risk and had the great benefit of keeping a good bat in the lineup while giving Ortiz a rest (and, really, Leon too).
  7. Very impressive. I never saw that outfield play--always stationed where Sox games were not viewable.
  8. Back to pinch-running with Wright. I agree he wasn't the best choice for all the reasons other have given. But I am also amazed that any healthy MLB player cannot be asked to run the bases. We also know, for example, that Buchholz is a bad choice because he shows absolutely no sense on the basepaths--or didn't back when he was asked to pinch-run. Thanks to the DH, AL pitchers are becoming hot-house flowers which must be tended carefully. Before you know it, AL relievers will be allowed to ride a cart from the bullpen to the mound because of the risk that the long jog could be injurious.
  9. On July 27 Ziegler gave up a game-winning dinger to, guess who, Cabrera. Plus, as we know, he has amazing control issues, by which I mean walking guys after getting an 0-2 count. He might have been better than Tazawa, but it wasn't as clearcut as you seem to think. I personally would not have sent Tazawa out there because of his recent outings, but I think the real issue is the bullpen.
  10. Back to the using Tazawa issue. My only new thought is that I think Farrell, Lovullo, and the pitching coach need to rethink who does what in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings. In Farrell's defense, I think Ziegler going out to pitch the 8th would probably not have been much better. Didn't he give up that 3 run dinger to Cabrera not long ago? And this additional thought about Dombrowski, of whom I have been critical. He just might have put together a decent if not great rotation by adding Price and Pomeranz. We have now seen six starters pitch credibly. However, the bullpen is still a problem. I could certainly be wrong, but I think right now the three best relievers are the hard throwers Kimbrel, Barnes, and Ross.
  11. He tried to. Flight was cancelled.
  12. Great sixth, Buch!. I would like to say that as recently yesterday I was saying how dumb it was to resign Buch for this year. Sometimes it's good to be wrong.
  13. Buchhollz has been a little lucky, but the Tigers pitcher has too.
  14. Horrible at bat by HanRam. He fouls off 2 high fast balls and completely misses one in the middle of the strike zone.
  15. I'm not much of a Buchholz fan, but I fail to see the point in bashing him when he is actually doing OK. Plus one would think Sox fans would want him to do well so the Sox can win.
  16. Thank you. That explains a lot because I too thought MLB was being vindictive.
  17. I am duly chastened.
  18. Price working the corners more. Nice K on Machado.
  19. Bogaerts ain't the only one swinging a lot. Ortiz is too. First three are now 1 for 9. Bundy has thrown 75 pitches in 4 innings.
  20. Bundy seems to prefer to work the corners. Finally, a hit from the top of the order--a fastball not on the corner.
  21. You, sir, are quibbling. What's working beyond question is stacking up the lefties in the bottom of the order.
  22. Great K against Jones on a knuckle curve in the dirt! The changeup tonight stinks but the knuckle curve is working. Also the 2 seam and 4 seam fastball. After 3 Price has thrown 35 pitches and the rookie Bundy 56.
  23. Wow. Suddenly Price is going for the margins--all 5 pitches against Kim.
  24. Top of the order--Pedroia, Bogaerts, Ortiz, and Betts--are 0 for 7. Bottom 5 are 5 for 7 with all 3 rbi's. Tonight stacking up the lefties is working.
