    Did JBJ really, truly strike out with men on 2d and 3d and no one out? Seriously? Note that elder statesman--the over the hill guy--quickly hit a sac fly to get one guy home. JBJ batting 9th is right where he needs to be even though has definite hitting potential (and some pretty good numbers form 2016).

    Missed a lot, but replays show some pretty alert defense by the Sox to get hyperaggressive A's runners. I know, I know--only our guys are actually boneheads. Other teams are pretty solid on the fundamentals because they are better coached and managed.

    There we go again. Another first pitch hit for an easy out. By Vazquez. Fastball, but very low and barely in the zone--made to order for a groundout. He swung at a pitcher's pitch and at the same time shortened his inning. How nice of him.

    Only to get one started before the game. Righty Gossett vs. Lefty Pom, edge to us. 1 Bogaerts SS 2 Pedey DH 3 Benintendi LF 4 Betts RF 5 Moreland 1b 6 Vazquez C 7 Devers 3b 8 Holt 2b 9 Bradley CF 5 lefty bats. Holt basically in for HanRam with Pedey moving to DH. Vazquez moved up to 6th, Devers staying at 7th. Once again, bottom third are all lefty bats. Day game. Pom's chance to get the team back on track, but he will still need run support. Last night Sox very aggressive at bat, often (for them) hitting the first pitch. But it didn't work well at all.

    2d half numbers pretty glaring and very obviously not grouped around a mean. JBJ, Bogey, and Leon still get plenty of plate appearances.

    Meh. I'd let him start and go 3 or 4 first time out to see how he looks against real hitters. His start could bump Porcello (with Porcello being the long reliever) or ERod (who has now pitched well twice in a row) or even Fister (which I don't like). The point is to find out where Price really is just in case it's actually a pretty darn good place. I would not rest Sale because I like how he is working on his breaking stuff and keeping the ball low.

    Better than what I wrote. A lot of solid points about why we like watching these guys. Both catchers, the entire outfield, and SS and 3b will all be under 30 next year--I think the average will be around 26. Even counting Fister and Price, the average age of the rotation will be around 29. Over 30 lineup guys will be HanRam, Pedey, Nunez, and probably whoever plays 1b unless it's Travis.

    Please do not put me in the pessimist category. I have already written why I think we are the only AL team who can beat the Guardians in the ALCS. I also think we can beat the Astros. We have the second best defense (pitching and fielding) in the AL plus we potentially have some good starters to match up with theirs. Our one real problem is that we actually need to score runs to win, and that has generally our weak point this year against good pitching.

    Interesting. Thanks, moonslav. I've read about his practices, but this is the first time I've seen an analysis and a quote from Farrell on how Price might actually pitch again this year--or not. Price still has good stuff when he uses all of it and hit his spots. A short start (3, 4 innings?) might be worth trying before the postseason.

    Moon, I would argue that even that example--guy on 2b, no one on 1b--can be situation dependent. If he is fast and smart, he could well--and justifiably so--go for 3b based on where the ball is hit and how much lateral movement (or, better still, movement toward home plate by the thirdbaseman) is required to field the grounder. If no one is out, there are significant advantages to gettin someone to 3b on a groundout because then he can score on a fly ball, a groundout, a bunt, a passed ball, a balk, whatever. That's why we often expect the batter to move the runner by hitting to the right side in that same circumstance. If the guy on 2b obeys your golden rule and doesn't budge no matter what, he is still on 2b but with one out--big advantage to the pitcher because only a hit can hurt him. Even if the runner advances on a ground out or fly, there are now two outs, which means another groundout or fly ball won't bring him home. Let me re-emphasize that generally your rule makes sense. I just think there can be exceptions.

    They we don't have much to disagree on. Pom is my #3 even though I think ERod has better stuff--but he is way too inconsistent.

    Fair enough. Here's where I am coming from. Pom, it's true, has the 2d best pitching WAR on the team after Sale--overall he has as you say been good the whole season. He has also exceeded my expectations. What worries me is the number of pitches he needs to get thru 5 or 6 innings, which means the great majority of his starts depend on the bullpen being good. Thus I get nervous every single time he starts. Fister actually didn't join the club until late June. His first month was definitely terrible, but I charge that up to the new team, etc. But, as I keep saying, he has been our best starter for the last six weeks, which is over half of his season. To me he is no worse than our 3d best starter and I like him more for #2 for the simply reason that, when he is on, he is not only very good, but is also a good bet to hand the game off to Reed and Kimbrel, our two best relievers. Among all our starters, only Sale is consistently that good (or better, season long)_ when he is on. Yes, I think Pom is capable of pitching well, but think he is still basically a 5 or 6 inning guy.
