  1. Eovaldi looking better, mixing his pitches and throwing more strikes and staying out of the middle of the zone.
  2. Gotta love it. Eovaldi has struggled but shown some heart, especially getting that walk. Howard has been pretty good, but that walk hurt him. Sox haven't hit him hard, but have the two runs.
  3. OK, that's it. This ump is giving way more close calls to Howard than to Eovaldi. Anything borderline for Eovaldi has been a ball, but Howard has gotten several close ones. Great at bat by Eovaldi, while led to the 2 run rally and lead.
  4. So far Howard looks like the veteran and Eovaldi the rookie.
  5. Three k's off that Howard changeup, which is a better pitch than Eovaldi has in his entire repertoire. Sox have no hits after 2.
  6. That's two Sox batters completely and totally fooled by a changeup in the middle of the zone. Both for K's. Eovaldi has such a great repertoire, he doesn't need a changeup.
  7. Wow. Safe. Ump was right on top of the play.
  8. Howard, meanwhile, keeps throwing fastball after fastball--whoops, he just throw a changeup in the middle of the zone and Bogaerts missed by a mile.
  9. A semi-miraculous two outs. The only thing Eovaldi can throw for a strike is that fast ball. Correction, he's throw a couple of decent--and effective--cut fastballs to get 2 outs. So far, however, forget the slider, the curve, and I think a splitter which we haven't seen yet.
  10. Bryce Harper might be a tad over-priced at $35M/year. He looks like dog doo-doo, last night and today.
  11. He threw almost all fastballs to top of the order, and one guy made contact. 11 pitches, 9 strikes.
  12. Rookie making mincemeat of the first two Sox hitters.
  13. Rookie Howard can't find the strike zone--whoops, I meant to say Hernandez can't hit a fastball.
  14. Yankees won, upping the pressure.
  15. Hernandez 2B Devers 3B JD Martinez RF Bogaerts SS Santana CF Dalbec 1B Cordero LF Plawecki C Eovaldi P No Verdugo, no Vazquez, no Renfroe, no Gonzalez--all of whom played last night.
  16. On the 9th, a 500 yard par 4, he hit a 327 yard drive, which is insane. His 2d shot in a deep trap, his third close to the pin, followed by par putt.
  17. Saturday is move day, and Mickelson is now 9 under (and 4 up on the pack) on a 7800 yard course. DeChambeau has disappeared--again.
  18. Paper shmaper. There are no dominant teams in MLB this year, and the Phillies, despite my sarcasm in the OP last night, are not pushovers. They win 5 of 10 games and the Sox win 6 of 10. They're good at home and the Sox are good on the road. Eovaldi, ERA 4.60, struggling not to become the Sox worst starter, is going against a promising newbie. The Phillies were rotten in the field last night, but the Sox were rotten the game before that.
  19. Eovaldi ® v. Howard ® Last night is ancient history, and tonight there is a new mountain to climb--even though there was a lot to like about 11-3. I would love to say the Sox have the pitching edge tonight, but Eovaldi has been up and down and definitely hittable even though he has the most innings pitched in the Sox rotation and is tied for most quality starts, 3. He has been better on the road (Texas and Minnesota) than at Fenway. Howard is the Phillies #1 prospect. Almost 25, he doesn't have much MLB experience and this year has relieved for the Phillies (ERA 8.31) and started at AAA. mlb.com write-up says he will likely be held to 60 pitches. All that suggests Howard will get pounded tonight, but someone else wisely said the Sox don't do so well against newbies. Phillies are better at home than on the road. This month they had a 5 game winning streak at home. However, just before the Sox arrived, the lowly Marlins came to town and took 2 of 3.
  20. They sure are. On the other hand, they might be asking themselves about this year's surprising Bosox: who are these guys?
  21. JDM is 7th in MLB in OPS, tied for 4th (with Devers and others) in home runs, tied for 2d (with Devers and others) in rbi's, and is 1st in runs scored. This is a lot like 2018, especially with the Sox leading MLB in runs scored, OPS, doubles, etc. And they are doing it without a certain rightfielder who plays on the other coast.
  22. I like the extra pitcher, but losing Brice while also playing in a NL ballpark--hence needing more pinch-hitters--makes sense. Santana for Brice is a no-brainer.
  23. Good news for Harper and the Phillies: this was just one game of 162. After all, tomorrow is another day.
  24. And embarrassing. Unwritten law of MLB: don't make $35M/year players look bad. To make matters worse, the Sox already had a 5 run lead.
