  1. Wrong. If you will just read this game thread, you will realize that the culprit is Cora for not leaving Pivetta in the game. As for the rotten hitting, some credit has to go to the Rays pitching. That said, the lineup has royally screwed up scoring opportunities with abysmal baserunning.
  2. Tonight in this game I realize just how good Cora is and why I am thankful that none of us get to call the shots. Great call to bring in Taylor for the 3d out. Pivetta was more than happy to leave the game, and no way, no how was he going 9 innings. The point is to win the game this game and at the same time not ruin Pivetta's army in a silly pursuit of a no-hitter.
  3. Taylor could screw up, but it's definitely the right move. Pivetta was not at all reluctant to leave the game. He was getting tired, clearly. He also was not going to go 9 innings. No way.
  4. That was a hit and run play by the Rays and it worked. WEEI guys still haven't figured it out, so they aren't as smart as they think they are.
  5. Sox lineup doing their level best to destroy Pivetta's great start. Huge error by Chavis. Horrible baserunning. Lousy hitting. But also a great, great grab by Renfroe with a man on base.
  6. WEEI guys point out that the replay shows the tag on Renfroe's forearm before he touched the plate. Good call by the umps. Renfroe's pause was to ensure the SS didn't catch the single. Understandable, perhaps, but it did cost a run. Vazquez is the one who made the unbelievably stupid play getting picked up by the catcher.
  7. Look, I do understand the numbers, but this year the simple fact is that the Sox don't have enough great fielders and/or good hitters to provide 12 everyday lineup players. Dalbec is in horrible slump right now and is a lousy firstbaseman, but hasn't missed a game in like forever. Chavis is playing and helpless--again. My point remains: the Sox currently don't have enough good players to justify, say, 13 or 14 players on the big club. So it just makes sense to have extra relievers, especially when your rotation is struggling. And, FWIW, to me it's silly to have a bunch of position players who probably won't get in the game anyway, especially on a team with a DH.
  8. Good at bat by Devers. Too bad. Fantastic grab by Renfroe--game-saver.
  9. WEEI guys have not commented on this, but Pivetta is not throwing a high percentage of strikes. 37/69 = 54%. But he also has 6 K's to 2 BB's and of course no hits thru 5 innings.
  10. Sliders now instead of knuckle curves.
  11. Dalbec lucky. That was strike 3. Justice prevails. He swings and missed at a fastball right down the middle.
  12. Apparently Pivetta was the one who noticed the Lowe mistake.
  13. Sox are hitting a whole lot of popups.
  14. I prefer to call the Sox infield geniuses for realizing he screwed up. It was not that obvious.
  15. Wander Franco had an amazing debut--dinger, double, and 3 rbi's--in game 1 and has been hitless in 2 games since. Pivetta K'd him twice tonight so far. WEEI guys can't say enough in praise of Franco, which is probably valid.
  16. WEEI guys and the cameraman are making it clear how highly strung Pivetta is tonight. Pounding things in the dugout.
  17. He definitely is tonight. He has the Sox lineup mesmerized and helpless. His command is good, his changeup is really good, and his fastball might as well be 103 mph instead of the 93 mph it is. I think he has done a good job of mixing pitches and hitting the corners.
  18. Who needs a changeup when the Sox can't hit a 93 mph fastball?
  19. Pivetta's knuckle curve looking very good, but so is his fast ball.
  20. MLB pitchers risk public shaming if they doctor the ball, the Sox scored 9 runs in game 1, the Rays 8 runs last night, and tonight we are watching a pitching duel.
  21. Chavis and Verdugo have both made real contact with that changeup. Wacha is still working on no-hitter, however. As is Pivetta (after just 2 innings).
  22. First guy to make contact with Wacha's changeup--Chavis? The WEEI guys say bad call by the ump.
  23. Another K from Wacha's changeup. Sox lineup is being schooled.
  24. Meh. To me the good pitchers don't need sticky stuff to the degree Richards does. See Pivetta right now. And it is BS to say 14 pitchers on a roster has any effect on lineup players. Duran isn't in the minors because of too many pitchers on the Boston roster. Same for any talented Sox position player at Worcester or wherever. Ever heard of a guy named Santana? Do you really think the great, talented Santana ain't playing tonight because the Sox have too many pitchers on the roster?
  25. Another K from that changeup.
