I believe in CERA (catcher ERA) and have to say this season overall I think Vazquez has done solid work, as Wong did last night. I honestly don't think Higashioka is helping Cole that much today.
So much for my theory about Cole's fastball. It was, in my defense, right down the middle.
So moonslav called this when he said mismatches like these can lead to surprises.
If you are a Yankee fan, you can't be happy.
This ain't the old ERod who, even in his good year (2019) insisted on throwing all or almost all fastballs in the first inning no matter what.
I don't think he needs a great fastball to be successful. Command is way more important, and so far he has it. Plus a nice variety of pitches.
moonslav was the one who said last night ERod could win this game.
Now let's see what Cole has.
He looked better behind the plate than any Sox catcher this year. Granted, no throws to 2b on attempted steals, but also no passed balls and no wild pitches. He does jerk his glove toward the middle of the plate, but not as much as Vazquez. For all we know, he called all the pitches, and I didn't see many shaken off.
Really? In his last three games he gave up 2, 2, and 2 runs and pitched 7, 8, and 6 innings. Tuesday (7 innings, 2 ER), however, he did walk 3 Royals. The 8 innings were June 16 vs. the Jays.
Another very good game and two great wins chalked up by the Sox pitching and the estimable MVP78.
Tonight the defense and baserunning were pretty good too.
Well, let me see. Tomorrow it's ERod (ERA 6.07) vs. Cole (ERA 2.33). It there were two games in which it made sense to use the heck out of our bullpen, they was last night and tonight.
Meh. He also gave up no singles or, worse, extra base hits. Those were the three most dangerous hitters on the Yankees. Thus Ottavino comes in to get the easy grounder from Voit, who is level below those other three. Maybe Cora should have left Eovaldi in, but few if any managers would have.
