    Slow runner, but also another stunning throw by Renfroe. I just don't remember a guy with an arm this strong and, more importantly, this consistently accurate.

    Wow. Cora wants this game. It's only June, it's the third inning, and the Yankees have only scored 3 runs. But out goes Perez after 67 pitches and in comes Sawamura.

    Interesting. Bogey gets that 2 run double and figures his job's done. No need to catch anything. Devers strikes out on a pitch way, way out of the strike zone and figures he needs to make some plays in the field.

    I'm sure you're right, but I read this in wikipedia-- Despite a low Tampa Bay payroll, Bloom consistently fielded competitive teams. The franchise had been one of the most innovative under his management; he integrated analytics into all aspects of the game. He was an early user of breakthrough strategies, now more widely used, such as a much heavier emphasis on shifts and the use of openers (starting games with relief pitchers). Bloom is also known for his prowess in developing starting pitchers. He wrote the "Rays Way" player development handbook in 2008; and during his tenure with the Rays sportswriter Tom Verducci opined that "no franchise understands better how to identify, develop and maintain quality pitchers

    After last night's gem by Pivetta--6.2 innings of no hit no run ball--and the bullpen--no earned runs in 2.1 innings--I'm beginning to think the Sox pitchers just might be able to adjust to not doctoring up the baseball. So too the Rays pitchers and probably the rest of MLB pitchers--except for the few exceptions like Garrett Richards who say they simply can't adjust. I have also seen no reports of out of control pitchers beaning hitters. Pivetta threw 100+ pitches last night and so far has reported no permanent damage to his arm. I enjoyed the earlier episode of Kershaw vs. Girardi, who looked very foolish trying to prove Kershaw was cheating. Likewise the San Diego pitcher who went a little too far in demonstrating he had no illegal substances on his belt, glove, etc. ​ Alternatively, of course, there could be a vast conspiracy between the pitchers, most of whom can afford paying into a bribery pot, and the umpires. Perhaps Joe Girardi can enlighten us on that possibility.

    I actually have a pretty wild keyboard that types all kinds of mistakes, so I usually edit before entering.

    Completely agree, and we do need that reminder. But we did fritter away that one chance and our boneheaded catcher helped the Rays manufacture that one run from a single, a terrible throw, and a wild pitch.

    As I just said, yes, I do. But my real point isn't curve vs. knuckle curve but simply a curve, knuckle or otherwise, that works. Pivetta has one and Richards lost his.

    Yes, I do. They are held differently. But of course I can't see how the ball is gripped on any given pitch and rely on what the mlb gameday graphics say. Also, the knuckle curve seems to break more than a regular curve.

    I thought Vazquez called a good game behind the plate, but he is also capable of incredible stupidity. Like getting picked off of 2b by the catcher. More importantly, by throwing to 2b--actually a bad throw that went to CF--he put a baserunner on 3b with Barnes and his big knuckle curve on the mound. Then he calls for nothing but knuckle curves. He was doing everything possible to convert Margot's 2-out single into a home run. Renfroe on 2b was already picked off if that liner was caught, so stopping to see if it was caught was stupid. Dalbec can't get from 3b to home on a passed ball to the backstop, but Margot can do it when the passed ball only goes 10 feet to to Vazquez's right.

    Very disheartening loss of the game and series. Pivetta was brilliant. The bullpen was fine. But the position players--the lineup--were miserable at bat, in the field, and on the base paths.

    This is actually a heckuva game. Great grab by Vazquez despite that attempted sabotage by the Rays guy in that chair.

    Actually, I'm more than happy to criticize Cora on his use of the bullpen. But this time I thought it absolutely was the right call. And so did Pivetta. We are now thru 8 innings, and in my opinion--which, granted, ain't worth that much--Cora's handling of the Sox pitching in this game has been masterful.
