  1. At $30M/year for 10 years (or whatever) he is non-DFAable.
  2. You've oversimplified things. Yes, Kluber and Pivetta needed to go to the bullpen, but back in April they were reasonable choices as starters. Pivetta's WAR last season--33 starts--was 3d best on the team and 2d best among starters. He had 12 quality starts. Kluber used to be great. Sale, on the other hand, was a huge question mark--and started out badly. Paxton was another question mark, having pitched in just 6 games in the last 3 seasons. Houck was expected to be in the bullpen. Indeed, the rant this year was that he couldn't even get through a lineup a second time, let alone three times. Before this season Whitlock was way better as a reliever than as a starter. Bello showed promise last season, but no one expected him to be this good his second year.
  3. Mostly hitting, but the rotation improved and pitching made a difference. It still can, but Sale and Houck are out. Claiming that defense is the key to winning is just stupid. MLB is all about hitting and pitching. That's what teams pay the big bucks for. It's what a player must do reasonably well to get to MLB. I'm not saying defense can't make a difference, just that it's nowhere near as important as the other two.
  4. Kluber on the 15 day IL, leaving a huge hole in the bullpen, which Reyes will fill when he isn't playing 2b or SS. I just read that starter lefty Walter, up from AAA Worcester, is in fact expected to pitch today.
  5. Very interesting lineup. Dugo on bereavement leave (and won't be back until Tuesday), so Duvall in RF and Duran in CF and Yoshida in LF. Hamilton at SS and Reyes at 2b!! Against a righty starter, 5 lefty bats (including Hamilton). The other Hamilton is McGuire's replacement at catcher.
  6. Right you are. Opening rotation was Kluber, Sale, Houck, Crawford, and Pivetta. Sale is probably out for the season. Houck should be back in July. Kluber and Pivetta are still in the bullpen (where Pivetta is a plus and Kluber a minus). And Crawford, who went to the bullpen, is now back in the rotation where in his his last 4 starts he has gone 15 innings (under 4 IP per start).
  7. Yes indeed. Could be a throwaway game or one that Cora is willing to invest in with the bullpen. I believe the Sox opening day rotation was Sale, Paxton, Houck, Kluber, and Pivetta. Only Paxton remains. Sale and Houck are on the IL and Kluber and Pivetta are in the bullpen. Now it's Paxton, Whitlock, Bello, Crawford, and TBD. Cora has the easiest managing job in MLB.
  8. Dalbec could return if Casas is traded, which I've read is a possibility. The Sox could use more pitching. Also, right now Reyes is out with an abdomen issue and McGuire with an oblique strain. Both are day to day but that could change. FWIW, Casas's current overall WAR is -0.4. Only Kike is worse at -0.5. But Casas is 23 and therefore has trade value which Dalbec probably does not (he'll be 28 next week).
  9. Yes, but that's exactly what Moran (of the Twins did)--and he made it look easy, striking out Devers and Casas.
  10. Twins had the better bullpen tonight. And the Sox baserunning and defense weren't so hot.
  11. And I'd say your opinion is, well, mediocre.
  12. Very exciting ballgame to watch. Thank you, Sox!
  13. Battling Bosox tie it up again. 2 rbi's for Turner.
  14. Turner was a smart acquisition, especially for an old guy. JDM made a huge difference in 2018 and was still good afterward--but not last year.
  15. True. But only you would think of it.
  16. Interesting that Gallo went ape on that called third strike, which he appeared to believe--backed up by his manager--was outside when in fact it was a strike.
  17. Duran did after getting three doubles Monday night.
  18. Six lefty bats vs. righty Gray. Duran leading off again.
  19. Actually, his DWAR at SS is -0.2, which is hardly calamitous. But I defer to your greater knowledge on that. My point remains: he's playing tonight in a Red Sox uniform, so why not root for him?
  20. You could very well be right. But he's available. At least 3 better SS's are not: Story, Chang, and Reyes. Last night Kluber went 3 innings because it made sense to use him with a 10 run lead.
  21. You must have missed last night's double play, the best I've seen the Sox pull off in several years, catcher to 2b to 1b. Wong chose that route almost certainly because Devers was nowhere near 3b, but Kike was right on 2d base, waiting for a throw, which was a tad off (low and away) but still catchable and relayable to 1b. Just nonsense, of course.
  22. He turns 28 next week. Forget Casas for a moment and recognize that Turner also plays 1b. He should be the DH, but right now the Sox have five pretty good hitting outfielders in Duvall, Duran, Dugo, Yoshida, and even Refsnyder. Of those, easily the worst fielder is Yoshida, so he is kind of competing with Turner for the DH slot--assuming the Sox want Casas to play 1b. So my point--actually, the point raised by others--is that the Sox could probably do very nicely without Casas or Dalbec. Turner could play 1b every day and Yoshida could DH, which would improve the Sox outfield defense with Duvall, Refsnyder, Duran, and Dugo available. Nevertheless, Casas is getting to play, I think, because he's 23 (24 in January) and appears to be able to hit MLB pitching. And don't forget that Dalbec has had his chances. He played in 133 games in 2021 and 117 last year, so the Sox have had really good looks at him at this level. Last year his OPS was .652 and his WAR -0.7.
  23. Completely agree. That said, however, you cannot convince me Kluber was not useful last night because he was. Cora recently commented that the Sox were again screwed by the schedule when they had to play a double header Sunday vs the Yankees and the next day start a 4 game series in Minnesota. That put extra pressure on the Sox bullpen. Enter Kluber who ate 3 innings last night when it was clear Cora did not want to use his good relievers, especially with a 10-0 lead. Also this. Kluber is in fact on the active freaking roster. Whether or not he is traded or DFA'd or whatever, right now he needs to contribute in ways they help the club. And that's exactly what he did last night. By the way, have you forgotten the 2018 postseason in which our great closer Kimbrel gave up runs right and left? His ERA was 5.91, but he still got 6 saves.
  24. Boy oh boy have you misread the posts on Dalbec. Everyone agrees he is tearing up AAA for Worcester with fantastic numbers (OPS over 1.000, for example). However, the problem is that the Sox currently have not one but two first basemen, and their third baseman (I think Dalbec is playing 3B) is Devers. In addition, it has been pointed out that Dalbec has hit AAA pitching well before, but could not hit MLB pitching. Plus he has defensive issues (at 3b and 1b). I don't especially like Casas because he's slow and I think overweight. On the other hand, he is in fact hitting MLB pitching and his fielding is OK. And he's 23 (vs Dalbec's 28).
