  1. Devers looks worse tonight than when he came first came up. I mean completely lost at the plate. First pitch was right down the middle, which he disdained to swing at. Instead, for strike three he swung at a pitch that bounced in front of the plate.
  2. Tough flight to Minneapolis-St Paul after last night's game--and then play another game tonight. Sox team ERA was 28th early in the season, lingered forever at 27th, 26th, 25th, and is now 19th. Pretty amazing. However, injuries to Sale and now Houck are likely to affect that even though yesterday's doubleheader said otherwise with the great Ort (from Mort) starting game one. Twins at 36-36 with the 3d best team ERA in MLB. On this homestand they beat the Brewers twice and then lost 3 of 4 to Detroit. Sox are going with Paxton, Crawford, Whitlock, and a ptbnl. Keep this up, 78, and we will rename you mvp 23.
  3. Duran CF Turner DH Verdugo RF Devers 3B Refsnyder LF Casas 1B Kike 2B McGuire C Reyes SS Not too long ago, against righty starters, Cora would start 6 or 7 lefty bats. Tonight against Severino, a righty, it's 5 lefty bats. Turner, not Yoshida, is the DH. Duvall is also sitting tonight.
  4. Agree--of course. Two of the losses to Colorado were in extra innings. In all 3 wins since then the pitching has been decent. With Sale and now Houck out, it's going to get harder. Tonight plus the first 3 games vs Minnesota it's Bello, Paxton, Crawford (who has struggled as a starter), and Whitlock--and then a gap. Today it was Ort, but it could be Pivetta or Kluber (heaven forbid). So no question the hitting needs to kick in.
  5. That too. It did finally occur to me that, although the ball bounced way, way off of the Green Monster, it bounced toward home plate, so the Yankees outfielder was in perfect position to throw home. And Dugo, meanwhile, had to stop at 2b or between 2b and 1b until he knew whether the ball was caught.
  6. What PR? Do you seriously believe you know more about how to manage this team than Cora? We all love to make comments, level criticism, etc. That certainly includes me. But Cora has proven he knows what he is doing, especially when he is dealt less than a full hand to work with. This year the rotation began as a huge problem, but now it's coming around, except that Sale is on the IL until at least August and now Houck is on there too, maybe for 15 days, maybe longer. Plus Kluber stunks, and so did Pivetta. However, maybe I'm wrong. So, tell us all, please, on what basis you think you know more about how to manage the Sox than Cora does. You and others crabbed and crabbed and crabbed throughout this game about using Ort, etc. And the Sox won 6-2 with Ort going 4 innings while giving up 2 runs. Cora batted in no runs and threw no pitches, but I think his management was first rate.
  7. I can explain that for you. Cora knows a ton more about baseball and about this team than you do. So, when you say, "I have no idea," you are right.
  8. Well, that's something. A groundout RBI by the great Devers.
  9. How does Dugo not score on that?
  10. Chalk up another error for Devers--not Kike--and of course 4 scoreless innings by the lineup. Sox pitching, even with Ort starting, has been just fine: 2 runs through 5 innings.
  11. Middle of the 4th, score 2-0 Yankees. So right now it's the stinking lineup that's losing the game. The Sox are 0 for freaking 5 with RISP. Same old, same old.
  12. Game is postponed already. Doubleheader on Sunday
  13. I believe I’ve said at once last season and again this season Houck should be in the bullpen. I now think I was wrong. As moonslav says, even without Sale the rotation is looking pretty decent.
  14. Agree “liking” is over-rated, but 2018 and 2021 suggest Cora is a pretty good manager.
  15. I don’t see Duvall helping the defense unless he goes to LF. As for Story, he could return too late to make a difference. Agree on the rotation, but now worry about the hitting.
  16. Today too. Tripleheader?
  17. 5 righty bats vs righty German. No Verdugo or Duran—or Refsnyder.
  18. Terrific post. Thanks.
  19. Well done on listing the bench.
  20. Go look for yourself. Two dingers in a game leads to almost nuttin in the next game.
  21. Cora did it 2018, so it did not come from Chaim Bloom.
  22. A month ago I opined Crawford should start. Now I’m not so sure. However, I’m pretty happy right now with the other 4.
  23. Yes, but, frankly, I’d like him to accumulate outs vice pitches. And I’m not sure he can.
