  1. Now you have me wondering which is the stronger combo: Bogaerts at 3rd and Iggy at short, or Devers at 3rd and Bogaerts at short.
  2. Last off-season consisted of me hitting the refresh button on espn mlb to see if the Sox had signed JD Martinez yet, for like 4 months every day 5 times a day. We eventually got him but, wow it took long enough!!!!
  3. I *completely* forgot about Hideo Nomo! Wow! He definitely should win this thread.
  4. I'm just commenting on the prevailing rumors. I'd love to have a Pedroia back who can play 140+ games for us hitting .290 with gold glove defense. I'm not counting on it though.
  5. Bill Mueller, John Valentin, Tom Bolton, Bret Saberhagen all great answers to this thread.
  6. He said this century. Clemens had 1986 and 1996 20 K games. I would imagine the answer is the 2007 Clay Bucholz no-hitter.
  7. It's too bad that Iglesias is a free agent now and not next year when Bogaerts is. Otherwise he'd be a good safety net in case we lose Bogaerts.
  8. Yup that was my first thought, even if Pedroia and Castillo go to Seattle. That said, Diaz would be an awesome addition to the team.
  9. You just made my day. So true! I bet if Tim Naehring and Trot Nixon shook hands, they'd both tear the other's arm off.
  10. Personally I'm a poor judge of that. I thought Youkilis with his mastery of the strike zone would last forever, like Jason Giambi.
  11. I agree with Moonslav. Evans, Youkillis, Greenwell, Burks, Valentin, Oil Can Boyd I think are all properly remembered. Nick Esasky, wow, I forgot about him. How about Trot Nixon?
  12. Yeah this Diaz & Cano trade talk is interesting but I don't think it will amount to anything. If Pedroia is part of the deal, he may not wave his no-trade rights. If he isn't, we have a 2B headache. Plus we'd undoubtedly have to send Brasier, Barnes, or both to Seattle.
  13. Steve Pearce just won the World Series MVP, he shouldn't be considered "under the radar". Otherwise good list. I'dd add Tom Brunansky and Jody Reed. I'm assuming players like Mike Greenwell and John Valentin don't qualify either.
  14. Why not contemplate Brasier as the closer? Untested, sure, but he seems to have the talent.
  15. I know he had some fame at the time, but I'm going to go with Bill Mueller.
  16. Ken's 25 man roster: Signed: Kelly, Miller 5 starters: Sale, Price, Porcello, ERod, Velazquez 7 relievers: Johnson, Barnes, Brasier, Poyner, Workman, Miller, Kelly 8 starting fielders: Vazquez, Devers, Bogaerts, Pedroia, Pearce, Beni, JBJ, Betts 5 reserve fielders: Holt, Nunez, Moreland, Leon, Lin
  17. I will never, ever, forget Mike Timlin and Scott Williamson waiting in the pen and watching a tired Pedro give up the lead in the 8th. Anyway, my current thought is sign Andrew Miller and Joe Kelly, and have Miller, Barnes, Kelly and Brasier compete for closer in spring training.
  18. We have Hector Velazquez, who may beat Johnson out for the #5 or #6 spot anyway in spring training.
  19. Betts may end up being super expensive. If Price is $30 million per year, what is Betts? All I can say is ... glad it's not my money!
  20. I'd like to bring Andrew Miller back.
  21. If we don't keep Eovaldi and Kimbrel this off-season, and we don't keep Sale or JDM after next, then yes.
  22. I know I should be, but I'm very bullish on him. But it's easy to say when it's not your own money right?
  23. Yes that's a good idea. That's where Johnson/Velazquez/Wright could get work in, taking every 4th or 5th start Sale would otherwise get. But I honestly don't know what is needed to preserve the man I thought Cora did all he could in 2018 and he still went MIA for much of the second half.
  24. Common sense tells you that if batters #1 and #2 are high on-base percentage guys (like the old Wade Boggs / Jody Reed tandum), your #3-#5 hitters should be capable of knocking them in. Especially if the #9 hitter has a decent on-base percentage too. Betts is great like I said earlier because he has both a high OBP and slugging, so he can fill either the table setter or producer roles. I certainly thought the games in the playoffs where Xander hit third the lineup looked very strong, so I could be down for: Betts/Benitendi/Bogaerts/Martinez/... as the top 4.
  25. The games started is a bit misleading, as we know the quality dips after the all-star break. But I agree, we'll know more after next season.
