  1. It's astounding. I really hope Iglesias is available next offseason when we need him.
  2. I wonder if the Yanks will be battling the Rays for the wild card.
  3. E-Rod and Eovaldi are going to have WAY more than 4.5 WAR between them in 2019. Bank on it
  4. I’m putting him down for 18 wins then
  5. Thanks; I went from that link to this one: 404 Not Found: /news/red-sox-opening-day-roster-prediction/c-303762786. | MLB.com WWW.MLB.COM The projected roster from the article is: CATCHERS Christian Vazquez Blake Swihart INFIELDERS Mitch Moreland Steve Pearce Dustin Pedroia Xander Bogaerts Rafael Devers OUTFIELDERS Andrew Benintendi Jackie Bradley Jr. Mookie Betts J.D. Martinez UTILITY PLAYERS Brock Holt Eduardo Nunez STARTING PITCHERS Chris Sale David Price Rick Porcello Nathan Eovaldi Eduardo Rodriguez RELIEF PITCHERS Matt Barnes Ryan Brasier Steven Wright Heath Hembree Tyler Thornburg Brian Johnson Colton Brewer I hadn't even heard of Colton Brewer before I read the article.
  6. I have to admit I'm not familiar with him other than the name. Going to look at his stats ... wow he was awesome.
  7. What I meant by "middle relief, clean inning" are the relievers who are typically used to start an inning, not come in as a fireman. Hembree and Workman should be serviceable as 7th 8th inning guys who come on to start the inning. A disaster waiting to happen? Naw that's way too pessimistic. But what I really object to is the "pile of s***" remark. I thought Velazquez and Poyner were both impressive last year.
  8. Okay, let's see if this is a serviceable bullpen. Closer Barnes - he should be fine High Leverage Situations Brasier - he should do fine Thornburg - I have concerns (!) Middle relief, clean inning Hembree - This is his M.O. Workman - He should do fine Lefty Johnson - I have concerns about his ability to adapt to the bullpen in general Long relief Wright - He should do fine So basically, if Thornburg miraculously comes back to the player we thought he was, this bullpen should be fine. If he flames out, we need another guy like Brasier. Could that be Velazquez or Poyner?
  9. Here are the players in my estimation that need the most scrutiny: Dustin Pedroia - He needs to prove not only that he is still capable of playing, but is an improvement upon a Nunez/Holt platoon or an improvement upon Lin. Tyler Thornburg - Can he still be effective? Brian Johnson - Can he be effective in a relief role? Rafael Devers - Has his 3B defense improved? Ryan Brasier - He needs to show that last season wasn't a fluke.
  10. Last off-season right after we signed JDM I was asked how many wins I thought the Sox would have. I really felt the answer was 105+, but because I wanted to be 'realistic', I said 97-98. Sometimes optimism shouldn't be tempered
  11. Jethro Tull! (Also good to know Bagwell made it in)
  12. This is a tangent, but it really makes the The Hall of Fame irrelevant when Pete Rose, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Jeff Bagwell, Rafael Palmeiro, and Joe Jackson aren't in it. Oh, and I always thought Tony Oliva should have gotten in too
  13. For a relief pitcher, is there a stat that reflects inherited runners scoring?
  14. Thanks for compiling this list it helps. I agree that Thornburg should be given every chance to show he has something, but if he flames out in Spring Training like I expect him to, Velazquez hopefully makes the team instead. Likewise I think Poyner has a fair chance of outshining Hembree. If Wright is healthy, he could be the reliever everybody has been looking for.
  15. I'd be surprised if Thornburg survives spring training. Happy to be wrong. I'd like Velazquez back on the ML team. Does Wright start on the DL? I thought he was healthy now.
  16. I hope Pedroia either goes back to hitting .290 or is unable to play. It will be a tougher situation if he hits .250 with little power but is capable of playing every day.
  17. Those are some FANTASTIC baseball names btw. Yasmani Grandal is one of my all-time favorite sounding names, and Tyler Flowers has a neat ring to it as well. We should sign Austin Hedges and Tyler Flowers and have a nice floral arrangement of catchers.
  18. It will be very interesting to see what Kimbrel actually gets for annual value. I think he overplayed his hand, but we'll see.
  19. They must have been crossing their fingers hoping he'd decline it, which of course he did but his initial contract demands were ridiculous. I think one of the problems is that these players have agents who feed them lies about what kind of contract they can actually land, and that's why it is almost February and players of star caliber are unsigned.
  20. If my memory serves correctly, Buch wasn't very good out of the bullpen. (Neither was Brian Johnson last year). I think we have plenty of starter depth, so I'd rather see the Sox take a flier on someone who can relieve.
  21. Me neither. And I'd rather see Wright, Johnson, and Velazquez pick up the spot starts. I wonder if Kimbrel is regretting not taking the $17.9 million one year deal we offered him.
  22. Yes absolutely. I would understand the move, but I'd vastly prefer to get Leclerc with lesser pieces
  23. If Dave makes the move to trade ERod and bring in Leclerc I'd understand it. But Wright better be ready to start the season!
  24. I'm really concerned about Kimbrel's ability to pitch quality innings going forwards. I don't think he's the answer. I actually prefer the trade solution (see my Jose Leclerc crusade from the other thread).
  25. The Texas Rangers came in last place. Jose Leclerc had a 1.56 ERA, 13.27 strikeout to walk ratio, and 0.85 WHIP in his 57.2 innings of work. I'm looking at their starting pitching, and I think they need starters badly. Could we not pry Leclerc loose with our preponderance of starters? From what I can tell, they have Mike Minor and a bunch of wannabes.
