    I still don't think we agree on how much the FO is willing to spend. I think the FO is willing to overpay on most players that they are interested in. These days, you almost have to. They are just not willing to grossly overpay. You sound as though you believe the FO will pay whatever is necessary on certain players that they really want. I don't think they will. If the Yankees had offered $10 million more on Moncada, he would likely be a Yankee right now.

    Not a good day for Red Sox starting pitching. Masterson and Miley both looked terrible today.

    No doubt the way the FO handled the Lester negotiations leads one to wonder what was going on their minds. I can't rule out the possibility that they really didn't want Lester back. However, I think it's also possible that they just messed up with that original offer. Remember that the original offer was supposedly based off of Beckett's offer, and that the original offer was made prior to Lester having his career season. Add to that Lester's willingness to accept a discount, and I can understand why they would start with that amount, with the complete understanding that the two sides would negotiate from there. I still think that the FO screwed up with that initial offer, but I don't think that the initial offer necessarily indicates that they didn't want Lester back. I also don't think that Henry would make the last ditch effort to talk to Lester just for show. That seems like a rather extreme gesture to make just to appease the fans.

    That's exactly what it is. Otherwise, we'd be in the situation that the Yankees find themselves in.

    Looking at Yankees projections for next season: Davenport - Runs allowed 637, 3rd in the league behind only Oakland and Seattle Runs scored 662, 10th in the league PECOTA - Runs allowed 699, 6th in the league Runs scored 690, 10th in the league Zips - Runs allowed/game 4.08, 6th in the league Runs scored/game 4.13, 10th in the league The Yankees pitching is projected to be better than average while their offense is projected to be worse than average.

    I am not counting the Yankees out of the playoffs. While I think the Sox are the current favorites to win the division, the division is more or less up for grabs, depending on who gets the fewest bad breaks in terms of injuries and underperformances. So yes, the Yankees could very well make the playoffs. Either way, the potential of the Yankees pitching scares me a lot more than their offense does.

    They have a lot of question marks in their rotation, but if healthy (I understand that is a big if), that rotation should be really good. Tanaka and Pineda are a 1-2 punch that could be tough to beat. Last year, the Yankees were 8th in the league in runs allowed (not great, but better than their offense fared) and first in the league pitching WAR. They have an improved defense this year, along with a pen that should be very, very good. They were 13th in the league in runs scored and 11 in the league in offensive WAR. Scoring runs was a problem for them last year, and I don't see where they have improved in that area.

    By your reasoning, you're saying the FO has not wanted any of the free agents that got away. Don't you think it's possible, and probable, that they did in fact want many of the guys that signed elsewhere, but just couldn't see beating some other team's over the top offer? As I've mentioned before, there just comes a point where you have to say that offer is too much. As far as who the Sox signed this offseason, what do you think would have happened if some other team outbid the Sox by $30 mil? Do you think the Sox would have upped their offer? I don't. Does that then mean that they really didn't want that player?

    Sometimes this approach is difficult to accept as a fan, but from the FO's point of view, it's just smart business. Because the FO would not go any higher in its offer does not mean that the team did not want that player.

    IMO, their downfall will be their offense. They really did nothing to address their lack of it this offseason.

    I am really excited about Mookie, but I'm trying to keep my expectations in check. He's still very young and has a lot of learning to do at this level. Of course we all hope he lives up to the expectations, but remember we heard the same kind of hype regarding Bogaerts last season, and we quickly learned that Bogaerts is only human.

    It probably is the best thing in the long run. Before ST started, I was sure that Betts would be the one sent down, mainly because of Castillo's contract. Betts has made it very difficult for anyone not to want him leading off for the Sox. Plus Farrell is apparently in love with him. Castillo's injury isn't helping his cause either, not that it would likely have mattered either way.

    Barring injury or trade, it looks more and more like Castillo is going to be the odd man out when the Sox break camp.

    Bummer. I'm going to pretend that you didn't write that. Yaz's playing days, unfortunately, are mostly a little before my time.

    Tanaka has actually been pitching well and feeling good so far. I'm not sure that he'll make it through the whole season, but so far that has to be encouraging for the bad guys. CC claims he's healthy, and that his knee brace is more for peace of mind than anything else. If they stay healthy, the Yankees rotation can be scary good. We just have to hope that their offense is another dud like it was last year. Despite the Yankees saying that their not in on Hamels, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up getting him.

    LOL, I imagine. The "Games That 'Francoma' Has Cost the Team" threads were always a ton of laughs. I will say that I think Farrell overused the sac bunt last year. We'll have to see if he continues down that path this season.

    LOL Ogden. One of the reasons that I like you is because you love the Yankees as much as I do. Honestly, Girardi has never bothered me as much as the other 3 that I mentioned, but I am certainly not opposed to adding him to the list.
