    Vazquez' injury might not be the worst thing that could have happened to the team this spring, but I certainly understand where Dojii is coming from. IMO, his injury is a big blow to the pitching staff, which is the team's weakness to begin with. I think some people underestimate the positive effect a guy like Vazquez can have behind the plate, not only in terms of tangible evidence but in terms of intangibles as well. That said, thankfully the Sox FO was smart enough to sign back up catchers who are also defensively strong. Hanigan and Quintero should be able to hold down the fort for a couple of months until either Swihart is ready, or maybe in a best case scenario, Vazquez will be ready to return. Either way, losing Vazquez is a big blow to the team.

    Offensively, Quintero should be a little better than Butler, but that's not saying much.

    In 2014, the MLB average slash line at 2nd base was .250/.307/.364/.671 . While Dustin has shown some decline from where he once was, he still hit .278/.337/.376/.713 during a season in which he was not completely healthy. Throw in his elite defense, and he is far from being a liability or a problem to this team. Pedroia is among the least of the team's concerns.

    I still don't understand why the Yankees signed Andrew Miller over Robertson. Miller has been very good lately, but Robertson has shown that he can get the job done in the Bronx. On another note, CC seems a little frustrated.

    You're right that we're not answering any questions right now. We need to see how things play out for the first couple of months of the season. At that time, we'll have a much better idea of what our strengths and weaknesses are. We'll have a much better idea of who we can afford to trade, and who we need to trade for. As I've said before, we need to have some patience. This team has some good depth though. If a player gets injured or underperforms, we have a very good option for back up at every position, except for catcher now.

    I have nothing against Lackey and defended him many times when he was pitching like crap for us. I thought that the Sox would renegotiate his contract before he was traded last year. It leaves me wondering how much truth there was to Lackey saying that he would retire before pitching for the league minimum, and if there were some hard feelings between the two sides over that issue.

    LOL Ogden. Sticky notes are a must. Otherwise, I'd never remember half the things I'm supposed to.

    Thankfully, Hanigan and Quintero are both defensive catchers. The concern is that neither one of them is a full time catcher. I guess they should be able to hold down the fort until Swihart is ready, but I still feel very uneasy about Vazquez' injury.

    Absolutely not on trading Pedroia. But it is nice to know that if Pedroia suffers a significant injury, we have a player who can replace him at 2B and the Sox probably wouldn't miss a beat. I've mentioned before that our depth is amongst the best in baseball, and could end being the difference between making the postseason or not.

    If he pulls up lame again, then that solves a big "problem" for the Sox. Not that I'm wanting that to happen. Mark me down as being a big Victorino fan, and I hope he is our starting RFer, at least to start the season.

    It depends on what the Sox get for him, but trading him just to get rid of "excess baggage" is not good.

    If everyone stays healthy, that is a possibility for this year. Regardless, he is a good player to have for depth. He also has 2 options remaining, so while I don't see it happening, he could be sent to AAA also.

    Victorino is starting in 3 consecutive games today, tomorrow, and Monday to see how he holds up. How he comes through these 3 games should give us a clearer picture of what is going to happen.

    Apparently, speculation about Craig being traded is heating up. I am one that hopes he doesn't get traded, but we'll see.

    The team has a bunch of questions, and now even more with the possible loss of Vazquez. But so do the other teams in the division. I don't see the Sox being that much better than any other team in the league, but nor do I see any other team in the league being that much better than the Sox. It's not going to be easy, but the Sox have as good a chance as any other team. For that reason, I remain enthusiastic and optimistic.

    This is a big worry for me. IMO, Vazquez is one of the most important pieces of this team because of what he can do for our mediocre pitching staff. Thinking of him missing a significant part of the season, or maybe even the whole season gives me a sick feeling in my stomach. I will keep my fingers crossed that it is nothing too serious, but seeking a 2nd opinion usually means that it is. This is not good.

    We will never make it all the way to May. My guess is that new holes are being torn within the first week of the season.

    I'm starting to get the sense that Victorino might start the season on the DL. That would solve the problem of what to do with Castillo. However, if Victorino is indeed healthy and on the Opening Day roster, then my bet would be Castillo starting in AAA. If Nava is DFA'd, I will be shocked.

    The team should score a bunch of runs. The pitching won't always be pretty, but it should be decent enough to allow the offense a chance to win. Unlike in 2013, last year when we were down by 3 or even 2 runs, there was very little confidence that the offense would be able to come back. I think it will be a different feeling this year.

    Wanting the Sox to sign Chacin has nothing to do with desperation. I think it would be a good idea to sign him, and as you know, I am predicting an AL East title right along with you. I guess that makes you my fellow Pollyanna Fred. Welcome to the club!

    No, if Craig performs to 75% of what he used to be, that makes him approximately a 2 WAR player and a solid starter. The fact that his salary for next year is $5.5 mil would make that an excellent value. Add to that the approximately .5 WAR that Kelly is projected to add, and they together are worth about the same in Wins as Lackey projects to be. Additionally, Lackey would have only been with the team for one more year. Craig and Kelly are both under team control for several years. You might not like it, but that does not make it a stupid trade.

    The trade being a bust so far is meaningless, IMO. It's been all of 2 months of a lost season. Craig was still battling injury last year, along with confidence issues that came with the injury and being traded. He looks a lot better so far in ST than he looked with the Sox last year. Don't you think that it's possible for him to rebound to the point of being a very good hitter?

    Buchholz' ability to pitch consistently is indeed a problem. However, when he is on, he is very, very good. He seems so mentally frail that I think he needs to have all of his decisions on the mound dictated to him. Do not like him think or second guess himself. That's what happened yesterday with his pitch to Ciriaco. Having Vazquez behind the plate should help him with that.
