  1. You are going to believe that because you want to believe that Porcello is a terrible pitcher. Your opinion is far more speculative than that of Gammons, who at least has some access to the team. Here is some more on Porcello's struggles and his change in approach:
  2. Truer words were never spoken.
  3. Porcello might not have had the best K rate in 2014, but he had a good BB rate, giving him an above average K/BB ratio, which WAR also loves. He also had an above average HR/9 rate. His xFIP last year was 3.68. Even this year with his atrocious ERA, his xFIP is 4.10. Yes, Porcello will depend on his defense. There is nothing wrong with that if he has a good infield defense behind him, which should be the case this year. Detroit's infield defense has always been terrible. It's no coincidence that Porcello's ERA went down significantly when Detroit got rid of Fielder and moved Miggy to first base. All signs pointed towards Porcello pitching more like 2014 than pitching towards his career numbers.
  4. It was a bad idea before the season started. It would be an even worse idea now. There is a reason why the Sox deem Betts and Bogaerts untouchable.
  5. Why, exactly, is that more likely? Just because those are his career numbers? Do pitchers never improve over the course of their careers?
  6. Doesn't make much sense, but now they want him to return back to his sinkerball approach.
  7. I really thought the Sox would add a pitcher before the season started, but I understood their rationale for waiting to see exactly what their needs would be. The goal of this staff was to pitch well enough to keep the team in the hunt until midseason. Had the offense and defense performed like they should have, we would be looking at a completely different picture.
  8. Too late. Hopes are up.
  9. What? No love for Miley and his well-pitched game today against one of the hottest teams? Way to go Wade! The Sox own the Royals! Bring on the Os!
  10. You can't always base a player's performance for the upcoming year on career numbers. Players do improve, especially if they are entering their prime. It was not unreasonable to expect that Porcello could pitch closer to last year's numbers than to his career numbers. As far as the other guys go, none of them were expected to be top of the rotation guys, though Buchholz has his moments. They were expected to be either solid middle or back end guys. Players like Masterson rebound from injury all the time. Again, no one expected a top rotation, but rather a mediocre one. The way they are pitching is far from mediocre. It's been mostly horrendous.
  11. I read today that the Sox are now saying that they want Porcello to go back to his old approach. Porcello used to throw his sinker 50-60% of the time. This year he's throwing it about 34% of the time. As a result, he is getting more Ks, but his ground ball rate is at a career low while his fly ball and HR rates are at career highs. As we have all seen, he is getting hit hard. He has supposedly been working for a couple of weeks now on getting the effectiveness of the sinker back to where it was before this year. Apparently, throwing the 4 seamer more has affected the rotation of his sinker to the point where it is not as good as it was last year. Whether this initial change in approach was encouraged by the Sox or not is speculation, but supposedly the Sox thought they could get Porcello to improve his overall game by improving his K rate.
  12. I think he can pitch like he did last season, if he goes back to throwing his sinker about 50% of the time, and can get its effectiveness back.
  13. He has looked better the past couple of weeks. Hopefully, we will see some defensive improvement from him as the season goes on, along with him hitting like we know he is capable of hitting.
  14. I mostly agree. And I think one of the main focuses of the offseason was to keep their youth core intact.
  15. There were reasons to be wary of this staff, I agree. I think we all expected that the rotation that we started with would not be the rotation that we ended with. Regardless, I don't think anyone thought 4 out our 5 starters would have their career worst ERAs. Also, there are many games in which the starters pitched well enough but were either let down by their offense or by their defense. There is no way that the pitching, offense, or defense should be as bad as they've been.
  16. I have no problem admitting that I was wrong about Porcello and that you were right - up to this point. I'm sure that makes you happy. I am in no way ready to write him off for the remainder of his contract. He is a much better pitcher than what we're seeing so far this season. He just needs to get back to the approach that got him here.
  17. I understand the caution that many people had, particularly with regard to the starting pitching staff. Even those who are less than optimistic could not have predictied the team to be as bad as it is in either pitching, offense, or defense, never mind all 3 of them.
  18. This is exactly the point. For one, would you have expected Porcello's HR rate to spike and his ground ball rate to dip to a career low? The type of pitcher that he should be is tailor made for Fenway. For two, would you expect that none of the acquisitions would work? None? Also FTR, it's been not quite half a season. Though they do not look good right now, it is far too early to for anyone to be calling these signings a bust.
  19. It looks awful right now, for reason's beyond anyone's explanation, but I will defend that contract unitl I'm blue in the face. Given the same circumstances going in, it's one I would do again, hindsight notwithstanding.
  20. There is no reason to have expected that this year's team would be so bad. Anyone who says otherwise is being a revisionist.
  21. I don't think the idea of putting Hanley in LF was idiotic. He is a professional athlete who played one of the hardest defensive positions in the game. You would expect that he could play LF at least as well as he played SS, and reasonably expect to even see improvement in LF. Either way, with his offensive ability, he should still be well worth $22 mil a year.
  22. The problem is not in the valuation of the players. Every reasonable, unbiased, and objective forecaster had the Sox being a good and competitive team. I read this morning that, to date, Pedroia and Victorino are the only 2 starters who are performing at or above their PECOTA projections, and those projections tend to be conservative. Victorino's been on the DL, so that really only leaves Pedroia. You can reasonably expect some players to underperform their projections, maybe 1 or 2 players by a lot, but you also would expect some players to overperform. We are not getting any overperformances. Porcello now has the 2nd worst ERA of all qualified starters, ahead of only Shane Green. Miley, Kelly, and Masterson also all have career worst ERAs this season. That is just inexplicable.
