  1. Fun stats since the ASB: The Sox have been outscored 34-9. The offense has collectively batted .192. The Sox starters are 0-5 with a 7.31 ERA. Take out Miley's start in the first game, and their ERA is 9.70. This team is a disaster.
  2. Today is the day the team turns it around! Go Sox!!!
  3. What's even worse is, I still get upset when they lose.
  4. Take a look at this year's Yankees. A bad plan that is working out.
  5. One more thing. For all the talk about the signings of Hanley and Pablo being "splashy" signings or "shiny new toys", I think that, ironically, the reason why many people didn't like the way the rotation was constructed was because it didn't involove anyone "splashy". We needed to upgrade our offense over last year as much as we needed to upgrade our pitching.
  6. I am not trying to console anyone with my defense of Ben's offseason strategy. I am not consoled by it either. It stinks that our team is playing so badly, to put it mildly. I also agree that they are the laughing stock of MLB. The strategy failed miserably. There is no sugar coating it. However, where I think the logic of many fans misses is in thinking that because a plan failed, it must have been wrong. Or probably more on point, because one didn't like the plan or one disagreed with the plan, then it failed, it must be wrong. Neither of those things is true. I didn't particularly care for the strategy myself. I would much rather have had strong pitching and mediocre hitting. I really wanted the FO to add another pitcher and I really thought they would. That still doesn't mean that the plan was wrong. You know how the saying goes about the best laid plans.
  7. There were several who voiced doubts. Still, I don't think anyone could have foreseen them being this bad. Honestly.
  8. We all know that what is on paper doesn't matter. It doesn't matter how good a team is on paper, they still have to play the games. I have asked before where the disconnect is between what's on paper and what has happened on the field. I have read that ownership is looking to improve the scouting aspect of their player evaluation, which seems to say that their scouts are missing something. I have also heard comments on this board about this team not having enough heart, or comments about bad clubhouse character, which would also imply something is amiss with the scouting. As I posted earlier, I'm not really buying those reasons, but without going into all the stats again, it really is unexplainable that the team is playing as badly as it is.
  9. Had someone blown up, I'm sure that player would have gotten all kinds of criticism for not being professional. Exhibit A - The criticism Miley has gotten for "blowing up" at Farrell about being taken out of the game. Personally, I like to see that type of fire and competitiveness in the players. Maybe they don't always react in the most professional manner, but emotions are hard to control. I bet there's not a person on this board who hasn't reacted emotionally to something in the heat of the moment, then later regretted it. That said, I also have no problems with the likes of JD Drew. He took far too much criticism for not showing enough emotion. Players are humans. They all react differently and handle pressure in different ways. As far as this season goes, it is extremely heartbreaking. Watching this team has made me feel like crying almost every night. Good or bad, though, it's my team and I can't stop supporting or defending it.
  10. I am honestly not seeing the questionable character that you speak of. I think Pal summed it up nicely in his subsequesnt post.
  11. LOL It's uncanny how badly this team is playing. But there we are, back again the next night, hoping that things will get better.
  12. That has been extremely frustrating to watch. I'm sure it has to be deflating for the offense too, not that they are blameless for this mess of a season.
  13. I know it's not a popular opinion, but unless they are blown away with an offer, I disagree with the Sox trading away any of Hanley, Sanoval, or Porcello. None of them have looked good, but it's only been 3 months into their 4 or 5 year contracts. Even if you expected some decline from them, I am not buying that anyone expected any of them to be as bad as they are. I had and still have no problems with Hanley's or Porcello's contracts. I have never been a fan of Pablo's contract. Even so, I expect each of them to perform at a level more consistent to their contracts and to their expectations going forward.
  14. They are frustrating to watch for sure, but I don't have any problems rooting for any of these guys. A player being overpaid and/or stinking is not a reason for me to not pull for them.
  15. UN is the last person who should feel like a fool. He is one of the most rational and intelligent posters here. I believed in this team since Day 1, and still believe that Ben had a sound philosophy in building this team. I don't feel even remotely like a fool. Call me or UN a fool if it makes you feel better about yourself, but at least we can back up our stances with sound and intelligent arguments.
  16. People are entitled to say whatever they want to say about the team. In fact, I welcome disagreements. I enjoy the debate. I just think it can and should be done in a respectful manner, without the mockery and condescension.
  17. It is possible to disagree with others without being mocking and condescending.
  18. I am disagreeing with your thought that if Ben doesn't have the cajones to stand up to his owners to do the job the way he wants to do it, then he should just quit. The owners are ultimately going to make the final decisions, no matter how much a GM stands up to him.
  19. Theo was the man. He got far more criticism than he deserved. Ben is no Theo, but he is also getting far more criticism than he deserves. Something is definitely amiss with this team. Whether anyone likes the strategy behind the way the team was built or not, the talent is there. Perhaps you don't think there's enough talent to be a first place caliber team, but even so, there is no way they should be playing as badly as they are. No way. So, where is the disconnect between what's on paper and what takes place on the field? Why is there such a large disparity?
  20. And you wonder why positive posters stop posting when things are going bad. It's not because they have bailed on the team. It's because they don't want to read post after post like these.
  21. Do you honestly think that Ben standing up to Lucchino is going to give Ben full autonomy to do whatever he wants? Unfortunately, the bottom line is $$$ and that means that the owners are going to put making money in front of building a good team when making decisions. Ben can stand up to the owners all he wants, but the owners ultimately have the final say. He either has to accept it and deal with it, or quit his job. Why do you think Theo left, more than once? With all the criticism of Ben and Farrell, I am curious as to what the opinions about Theo and Tito were on this board. Those two were the best. We never had it so good with them, yet the amount of criticism towards them was unbelievable. All I can say is, be careful what you wish for.
  22. That was really a pathetic showing by the Sox in this series. I'm one who always believes there's hope, but this team has shown no signs that they can turn it around to play above .500, much less go on the type of run they will need to make up 9 games. It's rare that I go into a game expecting to lose.
