  1. Because the #3 hitter comes up with the bases empty and 2 outs more than any other spot in the line up. A good hitter is better used in the #4 or #2 slots.
  2. A lot depends on the rebounds of Pablo and Hanley. IMO, we don't so much need good luck, but rather we just need the lack of bad luck.
  3. Yes, but Pablo was good before 2015. Not as good as Price, but still good. I know you're going to argue all the "red flags" surrounding Pablo, most of which I agree with, but even with his decline and his weight issues, he was a reasonable risk for the first half of the contract.
  4. Take a look at the contracts that comparable pitchers are getting. The market has already caught up to Porcello's contract. In addition to the AAV, keep in mind the length of the contract and Porcello's age. Had Porcello pitched in 2015 like he did in 2014, we would not have been able to sign him for the amount that we did.
  5. Ah, sounds so much like what Dombrowski did with signing Price. As far as the Porcello contract goes, it was in no way a gross overpay.
  6. Well women certainly don't have to prove that ours is bigger than the next gal's.
  7. Have you heard that Fangraphs projects the Sox to finish with the 2nd best record in MLB, with 92 (now 91) wins?
  8. I disagree. It is a reason to suggest that they might do that. On paper, they have the talent to do so. Isn't talent a good reason?
  9. Ben gets credit for building a BP with depth.
  10. 1. I think Farrell is going to rest Papi more games than usual this season, not only for Papi's sake, but for the sake of allowing Hanley to DH more games. 2. Papi has never been known for running hard, so that won't be any different than it has been in the past. 3. Not that it much matters, but I think Papi will be in the 3 hole unless his offense falls way off. That said - **Warning to all traditionalists - New school statement coming up**, the #3 spot in the batting line up should be filled with your 5th best hitter, after the 1,2,4,and 5 slots are filled (not necessarily in that order).
  11. You are reading way too much into how the projected standings match up with the actual results. For those who write for Fangraphs, as well as those who are regular readers, the purpose and accuracy of projection systems is known.
  12. I realize that, which is one of the reasons why projections have such a wide margin of error. I'm talking about the projections being a good measure of the talent level of the team that was assembled during the offseason.
  13. This sort of information is EXACTLY what you use to back up a statement that this team is a playoff caliber team. That said, most of the rest of the projections are not out yet. If one system is way out of whack with the others, you would be right to question that system. Outside of that, if the projections are fairly in line with each other, which they usually are, then they offer very good objective support of what the caliber of the team is entering the season.
  14. Why is that?
  15. It's a simple format in which to present the data that most people can understand. Based on the talent level of the team and hundreds of thousands of simulations, the Sox, on paper, should win 92 games (which for the record is now down to 91 games) if everything went according to plan. We all know that almost never happens. No one here or at Fangraphs has ever said or has even suggested that the accuracy of the projections is something to bet on.
  16. I disagree.
  17. There may be no use for the data in terms of using it to forecast how the season is actually going to play out. There is use for it in terms of judging the talent level of the team, and for comparing that talent level to the talent levels of other teams.
  18. Refresh my memory - wasn't the Yankees last series on the road (at Fenway?), and the Yankees sat Jeter because they wanted his last series to be at home? The Sox last series is at home, isn't it? So I would think Ortiz will be playing. Besides that, I foresee the Sox going to the playoffs, in which case Ortiz will almost definitely be playing in the Sox' last series.
  19. I have the baseball package also, and have listened to most other broadcasts. I have always said that Don and Jerry were among the best in the business. We pretty much agree on this.
  20. LOL The Drews are so misunderstood.
  21. There was absolutely rationale behind signing Pablo. For one, we needed a third baseman.
  22. IMO, yes. What does that have to do with anything?
  23. I'm not sensitive. I'm just telling it like it is. If he or anyone else doesn't like the conversation, they don't have to read it.
  24. IMO, that was a Ben decision.
