  1. I bet if Theo had become the GM of the Rays 5 years ago, they'd be set up to have a good chance at a World Series ring. The only reason they might not have won one is because of the randomness of the playoffs.
  2. I know you didn't apologize. It was a joke. I corrected my statement. It is MY OPINION that Swihart will never be as good as Vazquez defensively based on what I've seen, heard, and read about the two catchers.
  3. I agree. They won't carry all 3 on the roster. Since Swihart is the only one with options left, he looks to be the odd man out, at least to start the season. I think starting the year in Pawtucket would actually be a good thing for Swihart.
  4. I don't know how realistic that approach is during the regular season though. The postseason is a whole different animal. That said, I do think there's going to be a focus on the set up men.
  5. That whole situation with Pablo last offseason and spring training was odd. The FO was supposedly checking in on Pablo regularly, and we got a report around Christmas that he looked great. Did the FO stop checking in on him after that? I do agree with you that the FO was not happy with Pablo's condition.
  6. The 'hold' is often a higher leverage situation than the 'save'. But don't get me started on 'holds'. And welcome.
  7. Leon is a very good defensive catcher in his own right. After we found out that Vazquez had to have surgery, I was relieved to hear that the Sox had acquired Leon because of his defensive reputation. Offensively, I'm pretty confident that Leon will be better than he was in 2015 but not as good as he was in 2016. I think he will be about average offensively for a catcher, which will make him a very good catcher overall. Personally, I would hate to give up any of our 3 catchers.
  8. I can agree with this. All I'm saying is to give him a fair chance. Don't give him a leg up because of his contract, and don't write him off because of what he has done the first two years. Just give him a fair chance. IMO, he never got that last year.
  9. Steady decline, yes. Falling off of the cliff before the age of 30, no. It was a bad contract, there is no arguing that. However, we should have been able to get some value out of Pablo during the first 2 years of his contract. The fact that we didn't was really bad luck.
  10. Not for a team who hasn't been able to win in over 100 years.
  11. In this case, I think it does make a huge difference. Theo had a 5 year plan and the plan worked perfectly. He stripped that team down and rebuilt it more or less from the ground up. This is a case where Theo was clearly THE man in charge of the decisions and the plan, and a case where he did not inherit an already good team that he just improved. And the team he built should be very good for the foreseeable future. IMO, what he did with the Cubs is phenomenal and unmatched.
  12. Pablo has always been a large player, and up until 2015, he was a pretty good player. It's not like he had been in great shape then suddenly let himself go when he came to Boston. He may have been heavier than he was in 2014, but he had years with the Giants when he was that big and he played well. It was reasonable to expect some decline due to aging. It was not reasonable to expect Pablo to be as bad as he was.
  13. It is not a stretch that Vazquez might be the better overall catcher between him and Leon. This is not to knock Leon, of whom I'm a big fan, but Vazquez sat out a year due to injury and then was rushed back. Vazquez' defense in 2014 was superb, albeit in a small sample. However, Vazquez had superb defensive numbers in the minors as well. For those who aren't a fan of numbers, he was highly touted defensively by the scouts as well. He had a reputation as being an elite defender, and that reputation was supported by the stats. Vazquez' injury caused a set back. Whether he can overcome that set back and return to his elite status remains to be seen. However, thinking that he can be a better catcher than Leon is not a stretch.
  14. Apology accepted.
  15. IMO, the FO screwed up last year and ended up hurting the development of both catchers. I would prefer a defensive catcher over an offensive one, but if Swihart proves to be the better overall value, then you have to go with him.
  16. The article does a good job of describing the difficulties of trying to compare GMs. It is a very subjective exercise. Also, this article was written in January of 2015. I wonder how much their ranking of Theo has changed with the Cubs winning the World Series.
  17. Kendrys Morales has signed with the Jays, presumably taking the Jays out of the picture for Encarnacion. I'm not sure how or if that will affect Encarnacion's contract demands, but that is one less major player competing for his services.
  18. Neither of those links worked, but I have looked at the accomplishments of both. I think that the points made about the recency effect and about trying to compare GMs from different eras are both valid points. IMO, Theo is still the best. I fully admit that I am partial to Theo and that my opinion is slanted by bias, but to me, there's no question about it.
  19. Actually, Dombrowski said that Swihart would be returning to the catching position and that they're scrapping the left field idea. He also said that as of now, Leon is the #1 catcher, Vazquez #2, and Swihart #3.
  20. The point of locking a player up before he hits free agency is to get a team friendly deal. The player gets financial security earlier than he otherwise would. If we're paying free agent prices to a player under team control, it kind of defeats the purpose.
  21. I said he would never be as good as Vazquez defensively. No, I can't know that for sure, but I think it's a pretty good educated guess. Perhaps I should have said that he will likely never be as good as Vazquez defensively. He could very well end up being the a better overall player than Vazquez, and I'm pretty sure I mentioned that in my post.
  22. I agree with this. Give Swihart the reps that he needs in AAA, focusing solely of catching. The initial scouting reports on him projected him to be an above average catcher, and an overall better package than Vazquez. Swihart is never going to be as good as good as Vazquez is defensively, and trying to compare him to that bar is unfair to Swihart. However, given a little more time to develop, he just may end up being a good defensive catcher as well as being an offensive one.
  23. Additional congrats to Mookie for also winning the Silver Slugger Award. Congrats to Bogaerts and Papi for winning this award as well.
  24. I would love to have Mookie locked up. That said, there is a limit to how much I'd offer. Earlier in the year, someone mentioned 10 yr/$300 mil. Sorry, but I just can't see giving him that kind of deal, no matter how awesome he is.
  25. Fair enough point. I don't know all of the GMs and what their accomplishments were, but I can't think of one who tops Theo's accomplishments.
