They won't completely replace those offensive numbers, but they won't have to. They will make up the difference with better pitching. -
Agreed. IMO, Panda has already sewn up the job. I just hope he stays committed to this better physical condition that he is in and doesn't become complacent again.

Excuse me for being optimistic. IMO, he is progressing very nicely. Again, I'm aware that there could always be a setback, but I like what I am hearing and reading so far.

No, I'm not surprised. I'm guessing that the batters batting out of different spots was not a daily or frequent change though, based on who the opposing pitcher was. In Pedroia's case, for instance, he batted 2nd almost every game until Farrell moved him to the leadoff spot based on team needs. Once he moved to the leadoff spot, he batted leadoff almost every game for the rest of the season. In other words, he wasn't moved back and forth based on whether a righty or lefty was pitching. I think it was a similar case for most of the regular starters.

For anyone who doesn't believe that the WBC is a big deal or that it's a joke, watch some of the games and watch the reactions of both the players and the fans. The announcers likened the excitement of the crowds to the crowds of World Cup Soccer playoffs and crowds of later rounds of the NCAA March Madness games. The U.S. plays the DR at 6:30 tonight. Who's in?

The U.S. team was a strong favorite over the team from Colombia and was supposed to beat them easily. Team USA did win, but it took them 10 innings to beat them 3-2. That's the beauty of baseball. On a related note, Quintana was the starting pitcher for Colombia and he basically shut down the US hitters for 5 innings.

Owens, OTOH, was terrible once again. I am really liking the pick up of Kendrick more and more every day. He has had a far better K/BB ratio than either Owens or Johnson, and has moved himself up the depth chart. His first opt out date is June 15 (I think), but with the injury to Price, and the questionable health of Wright, Pom, and ERod, Kendrick might find himself getting quite a few big league starts.

Farrell knows his players better than any of us do. I tend to think that players like as much consistency as possible and would prefer not to be moved around in the lineup, but maybe it doesn't bother them as much as I think it does. It is Farrell's job to put the batters where they feel the most comfortable and thereby will be the most productive.

Breaking up the righties (and more so the lefties) will benefit a line up more in the long run than trying to place each batter in his prototypical spot.

Very good news. Farrell also said that his strength tests were normal. Price could still have a setback, but as of now it sounds like he won't miss too much of the start of the season.

Are you using last year's data? I don't think the data gives a good indication of where hitters should bat, because most managers are still setting their lineups according to the conventional roles. The studies that are done look at the entire season. Even with the #3 slot getting more PAs than #4 over the season, the team would be better off with Mookie batting 4th rather than 3rd. All that said, the difference between Mookie batting 3rd or 4th is really, really small. Insignificant really. Farrell should bat him and the rest of the team where they feel most comfortable batting.

That's my point. It's not right that all those voters changed their minds because they didn't like something that Schilling said. Did I say that his stats weren't good enough?

I'm not sure that it is a crapshoot or completely random. Honestly, I haven't looked into it, but it seems like certain pitchers, due to either body type or mechanics, would be more prone to this type of injury than others would be. Of course, that doesn't mean that somebody who fits the profile would necessarily need TJ surgery or vice versa, but I think that some would be at higher risk.

I do agree with this. It's not just a prestige factor but also a comfort factor. Most managers, being old school, would never think of putting someone like Papi batting lead off over batting him 3rd. Papi's best spot would be 4th, but he would serve the team better hitting 1st than he would hitting 3rd.

This is typical, traditional batting order that is accepted by many as the best line up. Unfortunately, it is not the way a line up should be constructed. It's not what I say, it's what the research and data say.

This is another area that the stat geeks have researched over and over and over. The optimal line up takes into account that your best OBP guys are batting 1st and 2nd. Even with the best OBP guys batting 1 and 2, the #3 spot is not as important as the #1, 2, or 4 spots. If you want the best chance of scoring runs in the first and optimize the line up at the same time, put Mookie in the #2 spot. That also gives him more at bats. Te team will not get the most value batting him 3rd. Papi shouldn't have been batting 3rd either.

If Sale truly is a prime candidate for TJ surgery, then Dombrowski has no business trading our farm for him.

I think the media is making something out of nothing as far as Price's responses in that interview. That said, I agree that Price needs to stay off of social media. He is letting the twitter crowd get to him.

He was that good, which is why it's such an enigma that he just fell off the cliff. I realize that he was injured, but he should have been able to bounce back from that. He was not that old at the time. That said, I think it would take a lot for him to be able to crack the 25 man roster.
