So, if Sale were pitching like Pomeranz is right now, is that Dombrowski's fault? If Price never makes another start for us, is that Dombrowski's fault? I can see the argument in blaming him for Pomeranz because there were some sketchy medicals and Dombrowski declined to take back that trade, but he really can't be blamed for the other injuries. That said, he can be blamed for his erroneous team building philosophy.

But you have to remember that there's more than one way to build a contender. You say he did nothing to replace a HOF bat. He got Chris Sale. That's doing something pretty big.

Goodness knows I am far from a Dombrowski fan, yet here I am, forced to defend him. He did a terrific job in building this year's team. That was the overall consensus going into the season. 'Don't worry about the cliff in 2020', they told me. 'Enjoy this year's team! It's awesome! Dombrowski is the man!' How quickly things change. This is still a good team with a good offense. The runs will come.

The offense was not meant to be as good as it was last year. That's where the improvement in pitching comes in. (I keep hearing someone say, 'It's the pitching, stupid!') Also, we led the league by over 100 runs last year. Over 100! That's a lot. Even with the loss of Papi, the offense should be very good. I could see your point about not addressing the loss of Papi if our offense was merely 10 or 20 runs better than the next. And if Dombrowski did not improve the starting pitching significantly. But neither of those are the case.

Agreed. I always hate seeing articles like these, or ones that anoint a player as ROY before the season has even started. Beni has done very well, but we have to remember he's still very young and very inexperienced at the major league level.

He seems to be handling the pressure pretty well. I agree with you about the 'luck' factor, or lack thereof, when it comes to our offense. They are getting on base at a good clip, which is still the bottom line in scoring runs. The runs will come.

I know it's not my place to say (but I'm going to say anyway), that I completely agree with you about starting new threads at every whim. You have been more than generous in first asking posters not to do it, then in issuing reminders, then 'warnings'. I say, 'Delete away'! -
I haven't taken the time to look, but relievers like Cishek who have very good seasons are all over the place. The best closers often come out of nowhere. I still believe in the philosophy of acquiring as many arms as you can and see what sticks. Chances are one or two of your guys will step up and have very good seasons for much less cost than what we paid Kimbrel.

There are a couple of points here that I disagree with, but overall I very much agree with what you've said. On the whole, I'm strongly against the way that Dombrowski has done business. I would much rather still have Ben. That said, the team we have this year should be performing better than it has been. It should be a contender. It is not Dombrowski's fault, IMO, when players get injured or do not perform up to their abilities.

I realize that those prospects alone would not get a guy like Sale. They could have been used as part of a package to get a guy like Sale. Or maybe we could have acquired a #2-3 guy using some of those pieces. Perhaps had we traded for a mid rotation starter instead of Kimbrel, we wouldn't have needed to trade for Pomeranz later. There are all kinds of 'what ifs' that could have taken place with the prospects and money given up for Kimbrel. No, it's not stubbornness because I think we overpaid for Kimbrel. We did overpay for him. I'm not in any way criticizing Kimbrel. I'm thrilled to have him. I'm just against the philosophy of paying an arm and a leg for a relief pitcher. If you're going to give up that much, put a little more into it and get a player who will bring back more value.

I wonder if maybe the expectations placed on him are too high for such a young kid with virtually no major league experience. He has risen to the occasion overall so far, recent slump notwithstanding, but he may be trying to do too much. He's the clean up hitter in a line up that's been scuffling. That's a big weight to carry.

Don't forget the amount of money that Kimbrel is being paid on top of the prospects. I have no idea who was available or at what cost, so I fully acknowledge that what I would have liked to see may not be a reality. That said, I would have used those prospects as part of a package to trade for a young, cost controlled starter, like Sale.

Dombrowski is not to blame for the way our current team is playing. He did his job as far as assembling a team that should be contending for the playoffs this year. The injuries and underperformances are not his fault. I don't think Farrell is as much to blame as some people think he is, but when almost the entire team is playing like this team is playing, and for a fair length of time, you do have to start questioning the coaching staff.

Here are some interesting stats: With a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs, we get the runner home 47% of the time. The league average is 53%. With a runner on 2nd and 0 outs, we advance the runner 53% of the time. The league average is 62%. In other words, we have not done a good job of situational hitting. Good situational hitting would certainly improve the run scoring. Beni is the worst on the team in those situations. He is 3 for 10 in getting a runner home from 3rd and 1 for 5 in advancing a runner from 2nd with no outs. Is he (and the rest of the lineup) trying to do too much in those situations?

I still think Pablo needs to be given a fair chance, with good health, to show us what he has to offer. If things continue as they have been, I would expect to see Devers called up around mid July.

That game really stunk for so many reasons. This offense reminds me of the 2014 offense. The talent is there, IMO. They are too good not to be scoring runs. As in 2014, I keep waiting for the offensive surge to come. So far, I've been highly disappointed.

As MVP pointed out, the Rays defense has been worse than ours so far this year. I wonder how much of that has to do with how painstakingly long the Rays pitchers take in between pitches.

The bright spot of the series is Marrero's defensive play at 3B. Refreshing to see.
