    Isn't that the way it usually works though? It's very rare that all players on a team are hitting well or even average at the same time. Some guys in the lineup have to pick the other guys up. Hopefully with more at bats, Devers will get to the point where he will be picking up some of his teammates later in the year. Or maybe even sooner in the year!

    No, but sending Swihart down after 6 games was a panic move. And just to be clear, even though calling up Devers was a panic move, I am not in the camp that wants him sent back down. I have said many times that the team needs to be patient with him. I agree that sending him back down would be another panic move.

    Dombrowski: Devers is not being called up any time soon. One week later, Dombrowski: We are calling up Devers. That equals panic move.

    Moreland was a great pickup, but he is not meant to be any everyday player. He was meant to platoon with Hanley. Hopefully, Moreland's cool down is short lived. #BringBackHanley

    Is there really that much difference between being a set up man and a closer when it comes to stuff? Kelly often has to face the tougher part of the line up than Kimbrel does.

    Just because he's not old fashioned doesn't mean that he's always right. I'm on board with Cora. He's done a great job, so in no way am I trying to knock him. Besides, whether JD bats 3rd or 4th makes so little difference over the course of the season (2 runs) that it really doesn't matter. All that said, if you want to optimize your lineup, you do not put your best hitter in the 3rd spot. Also, while I'm on the top of JD, he still stinks defensively. The only reason that I have not brought it up lately is because there's really no sense in arguing about it. It's not because he's actually good out there.

    Let me rephrase: Sanchez is currently not even the most deserving catcher on his team to make the All Star team. Much less be leading the All Star voting.

    As teams and managers become more analytics oriented, traditional line ups are becoming a thing of the past. The numbers say that a team should not put its best hitter 3rd. The 3 best hitters should go in the #1, 2, and 4 spots, with #1 leaning more heavily towards OBP and #4 leaning more heavily towards slugging. The #5 slot ends up being more important than the #3 slot. So says The Armchair!

    I think people are reading too much into this. It's only been roughly 2 weeks since Hanley became a free agent. I heard that Hanley returned to the Dominican Republic, happy to take some time off. He does not appear to be in a rush to join another team just for the sake of joining another team. Maybe he doesn't want to play for a team like the Os? Either way, I'm not buying the insinuation that Hanley has been a 'problem' and, therefore, teams don't want to sign him.

    I pretty much agree with this post. IMO, calling Devers up before he was ready was a panic move. That said, he's here now and there really isn't any reason for him to be sent back down. By all accounts, he's working very hard at improving on both sides of the ball. It's just going to take some time. Patience, patience, and more patience. The Sox can afford to be patient with him because of their very good W-L record.

    Here's a stat for you. Jackie's BABIP in June is .125. Jackie has hit the ball solidly several times with nothing to show for it.

    I pretty much agree with you about Cora. He is doing a great job overall, and he deserves the benefit of the doubt. That said, that doesn't mean that we can't question some of his moves. As far a Kimbrel is concerned, I don't resent him. I'm very glad that he's on our team. At the same time, there is no way I'm re-signing him to an enormous contract.

    I'm sure they do get reviews, but I don't think they're held to a very high standard. My understanding is that it's very difficult to fire a big league umpire, no matter how bad he is. Therein lies the problem. I realize that there are some calls that are judgment calls on the part of the umpire. Something like the strike zone, however, should not be at the discretion of the umpire.

    This is going to be a tough series, particularly playing on the west coast. Honestly, I will be happy with a split. Price has been really good since he received the carpal tunnel diagnosis. We need that Price to show up tonight. It would be really nice to take the first game of the series. WIN!!!

    I wouldn't say it was a terrible decision, but I definitely think it was a questionable call. I was surprised to see Kimbrel come into the game.

    The problem is not with having human umpires. The problem is that they are not held accountable for the correctness or incorrectness of their calls.

    I see your point about why you would want robot umps but not replay. I can understand why people would be in favor of instant replay as well. I'm just innately opposed to both. It's just not the way baseball was meant to be played.

    Of course Cora has reasons for playing Nunez over Holt. And they are valid reasons. We just don't know what they are.
