    I completely agree. IMO, Cora had the best Red Sox season ever as a manager, but that is different than saying he is the best manager ever.

    Many of Cora's decisions have to deal with the here and now, because he has a game to manage, but we have seen him often pull a pitcher when the pitcher is cruising with a relatively low pitch count, to save some innings on the arm. We have often seen him rest his regulars when the team is struggling or when a player is hot, to make sure the player has enough in the tank in September and October. So many of his line up and pitching decisions are based on the whole season.

    I think having Sale start the home opener has a little bit to do with giving Sale that honor, but mostly I think Cora is just continuing to bring the starters along slowly. He wants to give the starters an extra day of rest, in addition to the off day.

    As a prospect, Swihart was projected to have above average defense, and with his offense, he was projected to be the better overall catcher between him and Vaz. Let's hope that with regular playing time, he will finally live up to that projection.

    I am a huge Vazquez fan and was a huge fan of his contract. I don't care what catchers do offensively. I care about how they handle the pitching staff and what they do behind the plate. If the rest of the line up does what it's supposed to do, the team can carry a weak hitting catcher in the #8 or #9 spot. Of course, when playing in a National League park and having the pitcher batting, the weakness gets a little more magnified.

    I'm with Slasher on this one. You attacked both Moonslav and Mal, totally unprovoked and completely unnecessary. You know your baseball. Stick to that.

    OTOH, the Red Sox do have to play 2 of their 'home' games against the Yankees in London.

    It's not about the accommodations or the means of traveling. Traveling to different time zones and being on the road takes a toll. Once again, you are only kidding yourself if you think otherwise. I'm not making excuses for my team. They have played terribly and probably would have regardless of the schedule. They simply were not ready coming out of spring training. I'm just pointing out that it is an uncommon and brutal schedule to open up a season

    Leon being out is not the reason our pitchers have done so poorly. However, weak hitting Vazquez (or Leon) is not the reason our offense is not scoring runs. We expected to have that 'hole' in the line up.

    Calling Cora the "best manager ever" was indeed premature after one season, and that would be the case even if the Sox were off to a 10-0 start this season. That being said, we are only 10 games into the season. It's too soon to know whether the magic is happening or not happening. Cora's decisions are not aimed at the short term goals, but rather at the season goals.

    If they knew or suspected that there was an injury, then giving him that kind of extension would be very stupid. That being the case, the Sox FO was not concerned about Sale's health when the extension was signed.

    The 2011 team started off horrendously like this, then went on a tear. Of course, they did have the epic September collapse, but the collapse will not happen to this team.

    I disagree. If this were August or September, then you change your strategy. The season is a marathon. He cannot manage to win games at any cost at this point. The Red Sox will be fine.

    Questioning the manager's decisions is fair game. I never understood why he would rest 2-3 regular players in the same game. Cora was questioned and criticized often last year for resting key players or for not playing a player who was hot. We may not like it, but it got us the WS Ring last season, so IMO, his decisions deserve the benefit of the doubt. What I like about Cora is that he's sticking to his guns. He is not panicking and he is not letting this slow start alter his game plan.

    Except the team did not stand pat. It just didn't make the big bullpen moves that you were hoping for.

    I have been with you all the way on not messing with the Leon/Vaz duo. If it ain't broke, don't mess with it. Swihart is not to be blamed for our pitching woes, but I do think that Leon might have been able to help somewhat. That is not a knock on Swihart. I have always liked him. I just don't know what we have in him because he hasn't been given ample playing time to get anything going. Hopefully, he will turn into the very good catcher that he was once touted to become.

    Let's see where they stand after more than one week of baseball, against teams not names the Orioles or the Tigers. And yes, I know that our pitching staff has been horrendous.

    It is unusual for teams to play that many games in a row without an off day to open the season. Also, something that one of the announcers pointed out that I'd forgotten about is that the Sox played their last 2 spring training games against the Cubs in Arizona. If I'm not mistaken, they left to go west on Sunday, March 24th. So they have been on the road a long time. Brutal.
