  1. Cora is standing by what he has done with the starters during ST. Time will tell whether it works out in the long run, but it sure is frustrating watching this team right now. I agree that kicking the crap out of the Os and Yankees would be a good way to start. Watch. I bet Chris Davis ends his hitless streak against us. LOL That's just the way things are going so far.
  2. I think that relief pitchers are a breed of their own, and stranger than starters.
  3. Fangraphs also still has the Red Sox with a 64% chance of making the playoffs. Considering our current record and run differential, that says a lot about the talent of the Red Sox. Or maybe about the lack of talent on the competition.
  4. I was with you all the up until that last sentence.
  5. Home Opener - WS Ring Ceremony Ring Ceremony 1:00 pm First Pitch 2:05 pm Matt Shoemaker 2-0/ 0.00 Became the 5th player in club history to make consecutive scoreless starts of at least seven innings with at least seven strike outs. Has not allowed any runs over the last 14 innings while scattering four hits and striking out 15/ Chris Sale 0-2/ 8.00 Pitched with the lowest average velocity (89.3 mph) in his last start allowing 3 hits and one run over six. Shoemaker has been really good in his first two starts. Thankfully, the Jays only have two hitters currently batting over .200 WIN!!!
  6. I have been waiting for the JBJ threads to start. I'm pleasantly surprised that they haven't yet.
  7. The other thing to keep in mind is that it might take a little bit of time for the pitchers to build that rapport with Swihart. It doesn't necessarily mean that Swihart is bad, just that the comfort and confidence level take a little time to develop. Our pitchers will be fine.
  8. IMO, giving Sale and the other starters extra rest was the main reason for starting Velazquez. Having the pitchers be strong in September and October remains the game plan.
  9. Apparently, those nerds know what they're talking about.
  10. Good call. That appears to be the game plan, at least early on.
  11. Scouts who watched him pitch his first two games this season think that Sale is injured. I don't know how much weight we should give to that, or who those scouts are, but that doesn't sound encouraging.
  12. Over the last 5 seasons, our home winning % is .565. Our road winning % is .528. Most teams perform better, on the whole, at home than they do on the road. Also, I wonder what the record is in west coast parks versus being at Fenway. (I'm too lazy to figure it out.) At any rate, I have said more than once that the reason for our slow start is that team was not ready coming out of spring training. That said, do I think the west coast trip contributed to the poor play? Absolutely.
  13. After my winning streak hits 2, I'll be expecting my pay raise.
  14. Hector Velazquez 0-0/ 4.76 Has made 3 appearances in relief this season and made eight starts in 2018. Merrill Kelly 1-0/ 4.53 Made his MLB debut in his last start vs the Padres after pitching 3 years in Korea. Allowed 3 runs over six. 'Double Negative = Positive' Mojo in effect for today's game. Let's end this road trip on a high note! WIN!!!
  15. Exactly. I don't think he has ever been given a fair chance.
  16. I get that. Regardless, traveling is physically and mentally exhausting. It just is. I have a hard time believing that it doesn't impact how the players play. Again, I'm not saying that's the reason the team is playing so poorly. It's not. At the same time, it certainly didn't help any. Put it this way, I would be more concerned if the team started with a 2-8 record on a home stand. Wouldn't you?
  17. Yeah, I saw that after I posted this. No worries, he'll be back.
  18. That's what I'm talking about.
  19. It is way too early to panic.
  20. I completely agree. IMO, Cora had the best Red Sox season ever as a manager, but that is different than saying he is the best manager ever.
  21. Many of Cora's decisions have to deal with the here and now, because he has a game to manage, but we have seen him often pull a pitcher when the pitcher is cruising with a relatively low pitch count, to save some innings on the arm. We have often seen him rest his regulars when the team is struggling or when a player is hot, to make sure the player has enough in the tank in September and October. So many of his line up and pitching decisions are based on the whole season.
  22. I think having Sale start the home opener has a little bit to do with giving Sale that honor, but mostly I think Cora is just continuing to bring the starters along slowly. He wants to give the starters an extra day of rest, in addition to the off day.
