  1. The team does not need any significant upgrades. It needs some bullpen depth (solid middle reliever or two) and it needs the starters to get their **** together. I agree that I don't want Dombrowski to make a stupid or over the top move. His deadline moves have been pretty good, so I suppose we'll get a decent reliever at minimal cost. What a difference a couple of days make, though. We went from thinking the worst after the Baltimore series, to thinking this team has a good chance during the first series against the Rays and the Yankees, to this team doesn't have it after the last two games. Not me, of course. My optimism for this team has not wavered. We will be playing baseball in October.
  2. Ha. There were some pretty rough calls last night, but no. The solution is not robot umps, but better human umps.
  3. I figured Morton would shut us down, pretty much like he did in the last game against us. But, we got to Morton for some runs. That's what stings. Hopefully, we do take the rest of the series.
  4. Here is what other team's aces did in their last outing, compared to ours: Dan Roche 14m Last outings.... Verlander 7 IP 2H 0ER Bieber 7 IP 9H 2ER Syndergaard 7.1 IP 5H 0ER Strasburg 7 IP 2H 1ER Kershaw 6 IP 3H 2ER Lester 7 IP 4H 0ER Price 4.1 IP 9H 4ER Sale 5.1 IP 5H 6ER #RedSox need their aces to go deeper or acquiring another reliever(s) won’t matter. It's like I could have tweeted that last sentence myself. I realize there is a lot of cherry picking in this data, but still. We expect and need Sale and Price to be better, or it won't matter whether we get another reliever or not.
  5. This is what Cora said before last night's game: Cora says he feels that ‘little by Little’ the bullpen has been able to take shape as a result of starters going 6+ innings. Described Workman as having emerged as the guy in the ninth. This is what he said after last night's game: We were going to be lined up for everything after that. Those guys have to do the job, too. It’s tough to go right away in the fifth inning with two outs to our guys. In the last 5 games, we have seen what happens when our starters did their job versus what happens when the starters did not do their job. Cora can't use his pen the way he wants to if the starters don't allow it. Again, the pen can only be as effective as the starters allow them to be.
  6. The heat and humidity probably play a factor, but last night's game was another in which it took the starter 20+ pitches to get out of the first inning. Even when they don't give up any first inning runs, our starters have a hard time getting out of the first inning with a good pitch count. Obviously, that makes it harder for them to get deep into the games.
  7. Anytime you don't offer an aging reliever who has shown signs of decline a large contract, that's smart, not lucky. That said, in Kimbrel's defense, it is too early to write him off or to say that his contract will be a mistake. I would not have given him that deal, but he may still end up being well worth it.
  8. I disagree that Sale should be a 2 inning pitcher. I also don't think that Eovaldi should be in the bullpen. Barnes has been a lot better than many people give him credit for.
  9. Close games like last night's are the most frustrating, but as I've said before, close games allow for randomness to prevail. It is much, much better for a team to lose a one run game than it is for the team to be blown out. The Rays did not dominate the Sox last night. One ball bouncing differently last night, one ball/strike call going the other way, and the Sox may very well have won that game. All that said, we can't have our starters pitching only 4.1 innings.
  10. You all have to remember that we are not at the ballpark. Nor are we even quoting analytics in the game threads during the games. Nor are the fans on this forum your average fans. The last thing on my mind when I'm watching a game or when I'm at the ballpark is advanced stats. During games, it's pure emotion and enjoying the beauty and the nuances of the game. This type of argument against analytics is weak. Very weak. As I've said before, if you are on a baseball forum discussing and debating baseball, it's a completely different story. Analytics are necessary.
  11. For those who like advanced stats, Sale's SIERA is 3.07 and his Deserved Run Average (DRA) is 2.65, good enough for 6th best out of all starters with at least 100 IP. Both of these stats are better predictors of future performance than ERA is. As an aside, Matt Barnes ranks #2 in DRA (1.90) out of all pitchers with at least one IP.
  12. I agree that the Sox are not getting another starter. Nor do we need one. I can see the Sox buying low on Diaz. He's not going to be as good as he was last year, but nor should he be as bad as he is this year. He is someone who should help with our pen depth problems. IMO, it would be a mistake for the Sox to go over the next luxury tax limit for a reliever, or any player for that matter.
  13. I can imagine. Hopefully, our rotation is going in the opposite direction of the Yankees' rotation.
  14. I read an article a couple of days ago about the effect of bad luck on JD Martinez. He is making extremely good contact with the ball, but isn't getting the results to show for it. He was compared to George Springer, who has very similar expected statistics to JD, but is getting better outcomes than JD. Not that JD has been terrible, but expect him to go on a tear these last 2 months.
  15. Pajama Larry - That's a good one. LOL
  16. That is rather incredible. I'm starting to believe the guy who insists that the Yankees are streaming subliminal messages through their PA system and on their jumbotron.
  17. The Yankees pitching was surprisingly good in April and May. Since then, they have turned back into pumpkins. April: ERA 3.89, OPS .695 May: ERA 3.45, OPS .699 June: ERA 5.46, OPS .838 July: ERA 4.93, OPS .829 More fun facts: In the month of July, your starters rank 29th in fWAR, 26th in ERA, and 29th in FIP. Cashman: Let's add some more offense!
  18. I bet when all is said and done, Sale will be well worth his contract.
  19. Sale has been frustrating to watch this year, much like Price was in his first season with Boston. He may be transitioning, and the extension may have been a little premature, but I'm willing to bet that Sale will re-establish himself as an ace very soon. Provided he stays healthy, that is. He works too hard and he is too much of a fierce competitor not to.
  20. We have seen recently what this team can do when the starters and the offense are performing to potential. The talent is there. We don't need a big acquisition. We need the guys that we have to keep playing like we know they can.
  21. It stinks that we couldn't pull off the sweep, but I'm pretty sure that any of us would have been all in if we were told ahead of time that the Sox would go 5-2. I will take that all year long. We have another 3 game and 4 game series coming up against the Rays and Yankees, respectively. I'd be very happy to go 5-2 again. Also, good game thread mojo for this series.
  22. 4th best save % in July!
  23. The outcome of one run games is largely due to randomness. The Yankees are 11-12 in one run games.
  24. Our pen is awful in save percentage. In just about every other category, our pen is good to average. Judging a pen on saves alone is as bad as judging a starting pitcher on wins alone.
  25. I don't see the Sox being able to pick up any starters who would be worth a darn. They either don't have the pieces to get the trade done or they won't be able to stay under the next cap. So yes, I agree that the rumors surrounding Bumgarner are smoke. Dombrowski might be waiting to see what happens in this Yankees series to make a move. We are only 2 games out of the wildcard right now. I really don't see the Yankees series making too much of a difference on whether to buy or sell.
