  1. Here's some really sobering news from Boston Sports Info: Boston Sports Info @bostonsportsinf · 1h Since June 22nd Toronto - (18-19) Boston - (17-19) Baltimore - (16-18) Red Sox are losing ground to the tankers, never mind trying to gain on the playoff contenders Ouch.
  2. The GM and Cora are not going to be fired before the 2020 season. Dombrowski is not going to do a fire sale, and the Sox are not going to do a complete rebuild. They may get rid of a couple of guys, like JBJ, but they will make moves to keep this team competitive for next year. We will still have most pieces in place.
  3. More like the 2014 team, IMO. 2012, aka the Bobby Valentine fiasco, doesn't count.
  4. I can't imagine what it must be like being a die hard football fan like I am with baseball. For one, the importance of each game and the magnitude of each loss is so much larger. Having to wait a whole week (usually) between games, especially after a tough loss, would be hard to bear. FTR, I have said to myself several times that I am done with team, as I'm sure we have all said. But then, there I am again the next night getting my heart yanked out once again. LOL
  5. What a difference a week makes.
  6. Once again, you guys are killing me. I hate baseball right now. LOL The fat lady has not sung yet!
  7. It's because Cherington was tasked with trying to stay competitive while rebuilding. It worked beautifully in 2013, signing the likes of Napoli and Victorino. Not so much with the signings of the three you mentioned. IMO, there is no way Ben signs Panda without the heavy arm of Lucchino 'persuading' him to do so. Ben left virtually no pitching. So, you sign Price. I can understand that. Maybe you even trade for Sale. The rest was overkill, including the trade for the great Kimbrel.
  8. I agree that there are in season moves that Dombrowski could have made for virtually pennies. I'm not sure why he was MIA for some of those. He certainly could have acquired one or two bullpen depth pieces without much cost.
  9. I do not disagree with a lot of what you say. However, this year's team should not be playing as poorly as they have been. We weren't going to repeat the 108 win season from last year, but we shouldn't be this bad. Even you have to agree with that. We knew what was going to happen with Dombrowski. Thankfully, we did win a WS Championship through it. My contention is that we could have won the championship without decimating the farm. Cherington's team was ready. Henry sold out too early on Cherington's 5 year plan, which BTW, also resulted in a WS Championship. We could have had all that success and still have a decent farm system, IMO.
  10. I 100% agree with you about long term contracts. I did not like the Price contract at all, and while I wanted Sale extended, the length of the extension is too long. I don't necessarily agree with the "you get what you pay for" philosophy. I understand that sometimes it can't be avoided, but signing big free agent contracts really should be the exception, not the norm.
  11. 1. Yes, they got leads. But the pen was often expected to hold small leads for 4+ innings. Obviously, that will lead to more blown saves. Remember that all blown holds are counted as blown saves. 2. The pen was overused, which makes them less effective. They have pitched far more innings this year than they had at the same point last year. If they were not so worn out, which essentially began the first week of the season, some of those blown saves might not have happened. 3. Last year, our starters went deeper and our offense tacked on. That's not happening consistently this year, which leads to not only to misuse of the pen, but putting the pen in many more high leverage and stressful situations. I'm not saying our pen has been great, but I honestly believe that if the starters pitched like they did last season, the pen would be a non-issue.
  12. LOL He should. He definitely should.
  13. Despite the horror show, I am still not in favor of robot umps. I don't think I can ever get on board with the idea.
  14. The pen is only a dumpster fire because of the inability of the starters to do what they were supposed to do. There is a big difference in what a pen can do when the starter regularly goes 6+ innings versus less than 5 innings. And in some games when the starters did go deeper, they gave up 5 runs in the process.
  15. When your team is pretty much set, there is no reason to be aggressive. It doesn't make sense to make moves just for the sake of making moves. There was not a whole lot of room for improvement.
  16. I don't think he ignored the pen. He just didn't sign any big name guys like most people wanted. While it looks bad now, I have no issues with Dombrowski signing Pearce over an expensive reliever. Again, we will have to disagree on this philosophy.
  17. Dombrowski gets high marks for Cora. Also, he gets high marks for pretty much everything he has done beginning with 2018.
  18. You and I have been on the same page since the beginning with most of what you said here. I think most people agree that building a strong franchise starts with the farm system. I hate that Dombrowski depleted our farm from being one of the best in baseball to being one of the worst in about 2 short years. The only way to overcome that and to stay competitive is to spend like drunken sailors, which Henry has done, but even he will not spend without limit. Nor should he. I thought for a very brief time that the cliff might not come because it sounded like Henry was willing to keep incurring those heavy tax penalties. It no longer sounds like he is willing to do so. We need to reset the tax and rebuild the farm. That does not necessarily mean being non-competitive if the right moves are made. Also, we both agree that the moves Dombrowski made were worth it because it brought us a championship. It sure does stink, though, having our hands tied in terms of what we can do right now.
  19. ftfy
  20. I am pretty sure that there is only one poster who anointed him as such.
  21. I agree that Dombrowski should have added some bullpen depth before the deadline. He addressed, or so we thought, the rotation depth by adding Cashner. We don't know what the cost was for adding a reliever. If it was a cost that would put us over the next threshold, then I'm fine with Dombrowski declining, and I am fine with Henry's unwillingness to add more payroll. As far as what they did during the preseason, I have no issues. You and I will have to disagree on that.
  22. Price was place on paternity leave but should be back in time for his start tomorrow. I believe Johnson is going game 2.
  23. It's getting hard to defend this team anymore. I am very disheartened by them right now. That said, don't give up. It's not over yet.
  24. There is not one season since Henry took over that I have entered the season feeling like the Sox had no chance of competing. I have felt like we've had a legitimate contender every year. It hasn't always turned out that way, but really, that's all we can ask of a GM and an owner. I don't think there was complacency on Dombrowski's or Henry's parts.
