  1. Post of the Day!
  2. Dombrowski pretty much held true to his reputation.
  3. Absolutely. I would be on board with this. Trading Price and using the savings to keep Mookie while not addressing the pitching issue is a different story.
  4. A decision to keep Betts because that's who fans want to see is a decision based on the business side of things (money), not based on the baseball side of things (wins). This is akin to Lucchino wanting to make a 'splash' or a 'sexy' move, and what supposedly created such a rift between him and Theo. While keeping Mookie is probably also the best decision in terms of wins, the FO should not operate based on who the fans want to see.
  5. If he's healthy, which he supposedly is, he's part of the solution.
  6. Of course there are exceptions. Mookie may very well be one of them. Then again, he may not be. I'm not willing to take that risk.
  7. I said already in decline by age 30, not starting to decline at age 30. Peak age is generally accepted to be 27, so I will concede that he is not post prime yet. However, some skills are already in decline by the age of 23.
  8. If trading Price means keeping Mookie, then you almost have to do it. However, it was the starting pitching that was our downfall last year, not our offense. Do we need a solid starting pitcher more or do we need the position player more? Betts is obviously the better player, but if you asked me who the team would survive better without, I'm not so sure my answer would be Price. Of course, the answer to that question hinges on Price's health, which we don't really know anything about. That said, Price has 3 more years left on his contract, so the decision would be about more than just next year.
  9. LOL This was coffee spitting LOL.
  10. Definitely. It is going to take some time. Hopefully, Henry has the patience to stick with Bloom for more than 2-3 years.
  11. Sorry, I have a hard time tempering my enthusiasm about Bloom. I'm excited! Every report I've read from anyone in baseball raves about this guy and thinks that the Sox scored a huge victory in signing him. It's not just this year, it's his long standing reputation. Have I mentioned that I'm excited?!
  12. You are being too generous with your prime years. Mookie is already entering 'post prime'.
  13. We have to remember that a player is typically already in decline by age 30. I know there are exceptions, but that's the overwhelming trend. If something were to happen where Mookie got injured or just declined more rapidly than expected, we'd be on the hook for the rest of that contract. Not likely to happen, but for me, the risk is too great.
  14. Even with a team that has a payroll like Boston's, tying up so much money in one player really limits the flexibility of the team, both long and short terms. And near the end of the contract, when Mookie is likely to not be performing up to the contract level, the contract will be that much more restrictive.
  15. You have to have that farm system. I don't expect the farm players to be at Mookie's level, but if you have a handful cost controlled players on your team, and other prospects that can be traded to fill a hole or two, that opens up the flexibility so much.
  16. Well, you don't necessarily trade him the year before he reaches FA. That's not what I'm saying. Try to extend him to a reasonable and somewhat team friendly deal like we did with Bogaerts. However, if he is going to go the same route that Mookie is going, then yes, it becomes a real possibility that he gets traded a year early. But whether he gets traded a year early or we just let him walk as a FA depends on a lot of factors, not the least of which is who would replace him. I get very emotionally attached to our players, especially our home grown ones. I hate to see them leave the team just as much as anyone does. But I have become that opposed to long term contracts.
  17. It's ironic, IMO, that I seem to be one of the few that are not so eager to trade Price. I get that his contract is huge, and trading his contract would help the team a great deal. But, we also need good starting pitching. If healthy, Price is a very good pitcher. From what I recall, nearly everyone was excited when Price was signed, despite the huge contract. How quickly the mighty will fall. This is the exact same type of thing that will likely happen if we sign Mookie to a mega deal.
  18. You are right that he hasn't done anything for us yet. Also, he has a very tough task ahead of him. That said, his reputation precedes him. I expect the team to be competitive in 2020. I'm not sure if the payroll will be where Henry wants it to be this year, nor will the farm system be where we need it to be this year, but Bloom will get those things headed in the right direction.
  19. LOL You crack me up. I have 100% confidence in Bloom, based on what I've read and heard about him. So yes, In Bloom I Trust.
  20. It's quite possible that those guys will be fined, but the conspiracy runs much deeper than that. It appears that the FO may be the masterminds behind the plot. Kevin Goldstein, a high-ranking FO executive, reportedly sent out an email asking scouts to spy on the opposing teams' dugouts. "One thing in specific we are looking for is picking up signs coming out of the dugout,” the email, disclosed to The Athletic, read. “What we are looking for is how much we can see, how we would log things, if we need cameras/binoculars, etc. So go to game, see what you can (or can’t) do and report back your findings." https://www.si.com/mlb/2019/11/17/astros-executive-email-cameras-steal-signs
  21. This is what leads me to believe that it will be an organizational penalty rather than sanctions against individuals. I do think the penalties will be rather stiff.
  22. I'm not talking about every player being the caliber of Mookie Betts. Guys like Pedroia, Xander, and Devers will do.
  23. I think that operating like a small market club has a lot of merit. Just because we are a big market club does not mean that we have to spend like drunken sailors. I understand that signing free agents is necessary. I also understand that there are times when we have to hand out a somewhat big contract. That should be the exception, however, not the norm. I don't understand the thinking that we shouldn't be doing something because we're not a small market club. I love Xander's extension. That's how you ensure competitiveness and continuity, not by signing someone to a mega contract like the one Mookie is going to get. I understand that the next great player is not guaranteed. However, the stronger the farm system, the greater the chance of graduating those great players.
  24. I do agree that Jacko is getting a little carried away.
