  1. The Yankees need starting pitching. Who are you kidding?
  2. I don't think the Sox are going to plan on getting much from Pedroia. At the same time, I also don't think they are going to go out and sign a full time 2nd baseman. IMO, it will be an internal option, likely Chavis, getting most of the at bats.
  3. Exactly, especially when we don't know the whole story behind it. Like I said, he probably shouldn't have said it, but we've all said things at one point or another that we wish we hadn't said.
  4. I'm not down on Pedroia at all. It's probably something he shouldn't have said, but by all accounts, Pedroia is a great teammate and a great leader.
  5. In the past couple of years, I have been very optimistic about Pedroia's ability to come back and stay healthy and productive. At this point, I no longer have that optimism about him. I am sure that he will give it 100% effort to get back, but I just can't see that happening with his knees the way they are. As always, I'm pulling for the guy. And yes, Machado is a punk.
  6. Post of the Day!
  7. The early word out of the GM meetings is that teams are not willing to give up much in terms of prospects for Mookie when they also have to pay his huge salary. I'm thinking more and more that the Sox are going to keep Mookie this year, and if necessary, wait until next year to reset.
  8. I have said that I'd prefer a contract with a higher AAV for fewer years, but I'm not willing to pay him $40 mil a year. That said, if I were willing to give him $240M/6, I think it's still a fairly large jump from that to $300M/10 as far as the overall money goes and especially the number of years. In other words, I can understand someone who would give the $240M/6 but not the $320M/10.
  9. I'm sure that Ben coming from Boston had some appeal to Cashman. That said, there are any number of other Red Sox execs that Cashman could have tried to hire, but didn't. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the Yankees farm system was not in the best shape at the time that Ben became available.
  10. Devers strikes me as a player who just wants to play. I don't think he cares where he plays or where he bats, he just wants to play.
  11. Cherington has been sought after, for both GM positions and for 2nd in command type positions, since he left the Red Sox. That Cashman tried to hire him as soon as he left the Sox speaks volumes about his credentials.
  12. Post of the Day! My apologies to Bell that this post is a couple of days old.
  13. If I had to pick one, I'd say that our disagreement is more about whether Mookie will put up similar numbers to what you posted. That said, our disagreement really isn't about either of those things. I think it's more about my overall aversion to huge contracts because for one, it's too big of a risk, and for two, I don't like having that much money tied up in one player. When all is said and done, Mookie may very well end up being worth the contract due to his play in the early years of the contract. However, a contract like that will handcuff the team in other areas, and there's a good chance the contract will become an albatross in the later years.
  14. You are talking in terms of hindsight, Moon. If I knew that Mookie would put up really good numbers for the duration of the contract, I'd sign up in a heartbeat. It's the risk involved with a long term contract that I'm opposed to. Yes, Mookie may have less risk than other players, but there is still a lot of risk involved no matter who the player is.
  15. I can't really argue against that. Like I said, I'm torn on the issue of trading or keeping Betts. I do think we'll be competitive next year, but I also believe we can be competitive without Mookie.
  16. Unfortunately, I cannot unite with the Budgies. Looking at the team budget in minute detail is something that is just not appealing to me.
  17. Personally, I'm torn between keeping Mookie this year or trading him, though I'm leaning towards keeping him because I think the team has a really good chance to compete in 2020. Either way, I can see the benefits. What I am against, however, is signing him to a long term contract. Ten year deal? No way would I do that. While I like the idea of a shorter contract at a higher AAV, I could not do 6 years at an AAV of $43 million per year. I think the Sox need to let him go.
  18. LOL Nice logic.
  19. If it were up to me, he'd strictly DH. I don't foresee that happening with the Red Sox. Cora will allow him to play in the field. That being the case, I'd prefer he played 1B over playing in the outfield.
  20. Perhaps, but I think his decision not to opt out was largely based on what he thought his market would be. Also, I think he is happy with the Red Sox because Cora allows him to play the field fairly regularly.
  21. Post of the Day!
  22. I am not looking for JD to become our everyday 1B or even a platoon player. Not even looking for him to play 1/4 of the games there. He reportedly likes playing in the field, and Cora seems to want to appease him in that regard. I'd rather have him playing at 1B than playing in the outfield.
  23. To me, trading away our starting pitchers so that we can keep Betts kind of defeats the purpose. If we realistically want to stay competitive, then we need the big 3 starters to bounce back next season. If they aren't able to, then we likely won't be competitive, in which case trading Betts makes way more sense.
  24. This has pretty much been my feeling as well. I am not convinced that the Sox are going to get under $208 Mthis year. To me, it makes more sense to reset in 2021.
