  1. Making the postseason. It may be as a wildcard, which I know some people think doesn't count, but that means we'll be one of the 5 best teams in the AL, even if we trade Mookie.
  2. Trading Mookie does not mean we are punting the season. Trading Mookie and Price probably does mean we're punting, though that would remain to be seen. If we are punting, then it would make sense to trade whoever will not help us in 2021 and beyond. The team will be competitive this year. In Bloom, I trust.
  3. And maybe he will be. I'm not willing to take that chance.
  4. Henry panicked after the back to back last place finishes. He then went against pretty much everything that he believed in. Now, he's trying to reel it back in.
  5. Peak age is typically about 27-28 years of age. Some things, like speed, actually start declining earlier than that, somewhere around 23 years of age. Some players will defy the aging curve. Most won't. Most people here seem to think that Betts will. He might, but that's an awful lot of money and time to invest in something so risky.
  6. Having so much money tied up in Mookie might give you maximum talent at that position, but having payroll flexibility allows much better options for maximum talent on the overall roster. Either way, the bottom line is that we need some cost-controlled players.
  7. Maybe not to the degree of where Pedroia is, but yes. Eventually, his contract will be an albatross.
  8. I will be in the group hoping that we do not have the highest bid.
  9. I believe in Mookie more than Machado/Harper also. If there were a player to give such a contract to, it would be Mookie. I'm just so opposed to this type of contract because of the flexibility it takes away from the team for both the short and long terms. That's an awful lot of money to tie up in one player.
  10. I could live with this.
  11. We will have to disagree on signing players to long term contracts. Can Henry afford it? Of course he can. That doesn't mean that he should do it. A 12/420 contract to Mookie might end up being a net positive. It might not be. But I am very confident in saying that at some point probably the about the last 5 years, the contract will turn into an albatross.
  12. Without a doubt. Given the choice between letting Mookie walk or signing him to a 10+ year contract, I'm going with the former every time.
  13. I honestly can't say what ownership wants. They have been all over the place this offseason. However, they did say at one point that their priority was remaining competitive. Can they do that and get under the tax limit at the same time? We shall see.
  14. Exactly.
  15. We need starting pitching more than we need offense. I think the team would survive without Betts. I don't think they would survive without Price. That is in no way saying that Price is a better player than Betts is.
  16. Thanks! It's always a pleasure to see you and to read your posts.
  17. Now we're talking!
  18. I really don't think the FO has any intention of trading him, then re-signing him as a free agent. At least I hope not. I understand people's desire to trade Price and rid us of his remaining contract. I really do. However, I think we need him to contend this year, more than we need Mookie.
  19. I don't really disagree with any of this. I agree that for the long term, dumping Price's contract makes more sense than keeping him. As I said, however, I'm looking to contend in 2020. Therefore, I want to keep Price around.
  20. I understand that opinion completely. The FO is supposedly trying to strike a balance between remaining competitive for this year and strengthening our long term outlook. IMO, we have the talent to compete in 2020. I would not punt this season.
  21. The Sox should not have signed him to begin with. The years on that contract were/are the problem. Trading him right now while trying to contend would be a mistake. For anyone wanting to punt this season and reload, then trading him is obviously the right choice. I'm not in that boat. And thanks!
  22. No, I wouldn't be. I was strongly against signing him to that contract in the first place. That said, I am looking to compete in 2020. Our biggest area of concern is starting pitching. Price is a darn good pitcher, when healthy. Trading him obviously weakens our already biggest weakness. Unless there is a very good, cost-controlled starting pitcher coming back to us that I am unaware of, we need Price to contend.
  23. I have to disagree. Trading ERod makes little sense to a team that's trying to stay competitive and cut salary.
  24. If reports about what the Sox offered Mookie and what he countered with are true, then I suspect that the Sox have made every reasonable effort they could to keep Mookie long term. There comes a point when you realize it's not going to happen unless you want to commit to ridiculously insane demands. Trading Betts now makes Bloom neither a liar nor a fool.
